Samsung Galaxy J2 Core is the company's first Android Go phone, US release uncertain

Samsung just announced its very first Android Go smartphone - the Galaxy J2 Core. As previously reported, this is a low-end device made for customers who can't (or don't want to) spend a lot of money on a new phone.

There's nothing impressing about the design and specs of the Samsung Galaxy J2 Core. The smartphone sports a 5-inch TFT display with 540 x 960 pixels and is powered by a quad-core 1.4 GHz Exynos 7570 processor. The new handset further offers 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of expandable storage space, and a 2,600 mAh battery. There is an 8 MP camera on the back of the Galaxy J2 Core, and a 5 MP one on the front.

The fact that it runs Android Go (based on Android Oreo) allows the Samsung Galaxy J2 Core to run smoothly even if its internals are far from being powerful. Android Go includes light versions of apps and services like YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, and so on, all of which are optimized for low-end hardware.

Samsung says the Galaxy J2 Core will be launched later today in Malaysia and India. While pricing details haven't been shared, we don't think the phone will cost more than $100. There's no word on a possible Galaxy J2 Core release in the US, but we'll be contacting Samsung to see if it's got anything to share on this.
