DC fans re-styled the Comic-Con trailer for Aquaman as an 8-Bit game. From his surface-world upbringing to his underwater adventures, Arthur Curry aka. Aquaman and company are seen moving in a level-to-level fashion through each scene in the trailer, representing the action-packed adventure expected from the highly anticipated DC film.

December marks Aquaman's scheduled release date, making it not only the lone Worlds of DC 2018 release, but also the only live-action superhero Christmas theatrical debut. Marvel's Captain Marvel and Avengers 4 are slated for next year, however, the film is still expected to go up against heavy competition over the holiday season. DC fans can also expect to see Shazam! and Wonder Woman 1984 coming in 2019.

The trailer released by JoBlo is a treat for any gamer geek, featuring the original's music transposed to retro arcade sounds, as well as classic character narrations and thought-bubble descriptions. The Street Fighter-style attacks in the Aquaman fights scenes, and 2D ocean waves and bubble patterns rendered in the backgrounds complete the feel of an old school Nintendo adventure. Check out the full trailer below:

The film stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman/Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, and Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna. James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring) is directing, with music by Rupert Gregson-Williams (Wonder Woman, The Legend of Tarzan).

What is known at this point is the gravity of how Aquaman's box office performance will affect DC's long-term cinematic viability. The tone of Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice maintained the severity of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, and acted as a counterpoint to Marvel's undeniably lighthearted, but widely acclaimed film series. Last year's Justice League, however, delivered a much goofier final product, resulted in disappointing box office sales, and was quickly overshadowed by Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok. Wonder Woman on the other hand achieved considerable acclaim and success as a standalone, without the dark depiction featured in Batman V Superman. Despite mixed reception to the film, Momoa undoubtedly delivered laughs and charisma in Justice League, so hopes for his starring act performance are justifiably high.

The good news is that as hype for epics like Aquaman continue to build, fans and creators alike are seemingly hungrier than ever to experiment with styles, universes, plots, and twists. Sci-fi fans can check out the recently released anime-style Rick and Morty trailer, while anyone still needing an post-Infinity War fix can marvel at an awesome Avengers 4 fan trailer featuring an Avengers/X-Men vs. Thanos twist. In the meantime, excitement continues to build as Arthur Curry's solo movie adventure gets closer to its release date.
