Man suspected of raiding dead teen’s room seen downing pints hours after

A MAN suspected of raiding a dead 14-year-old boy's bedroom was seen downing pints of lager just hours after the break-in - before locals tipped-off cops.

The alleged crook sparked outrage when CCTV caught him breaking into the home in Stockport, Greater Manchester, with one family member branding him a "scumbag".

A nationwide manhunt was launched and Simon Knights, 42, was arrested yesterday and charged with burglary.

A hotel owner apparently recognised him after reading the appeal.

Exclusive footage obtained by The Sun Online shows the suspected thief drinking Heineken in the hotel bar just hours after the raid.

Other images show him walking through the hotel lobby in Crewe, Cheshire - 18 miles from Stockport.

The footage was provided by Nick Bone, 50, who runs the Royal Hotel with his wife Kerry, 46.

Mr Bone told The Sun Online he became suspicious after seeing media reports of the raid.

He said: “We read the story yesterday and thought we recognised him straight away so we called the police.

"Because we’re close to the Crewe football ground we have a direct radio to local police and the bar manager said ‘we’ve got a suspected criminal in our midst’.

"People in the bar tried to keep him inside before the police came and I think he got a bit twitchy, he must’ve thought he was getting set up so he decided to leave.

“A member of staff and one of the locals chased after him and the police pulled up on the side of the road and arrested him."

Mr Bone revealed the suspect had been staying at the hotel all week.

He said he became suspicious about the man’s behaviour and the fact he wore the same blue suit and shirt for four consecutive days.

He added: “He told people at the bar he came up on a train from London and spoke in a London accent.

“We were cautious about this guy being in the bar but obviously when we saw The Sun Online story we thought it was him straight away.

“He stayed Monday and Tuesday and was booked in for another night but we asked him to leave because we became suspicious.

“But this didn’t stop him coming in and he was spotted at the bar drinking beer again."

And Mr Bone is now delighted they were able to help catch the suspect after a staff member and local sprinted after him when he left the bar.

The hunt for the burglar intensified after the dead boy’s auntie revealed her sister had left his room untouched following his death.

Describing the incident in Stockport, Sophie Galustain said: "This scumbag broke into my sister's house in Stockport today at 2pm and stole valuables.

"My sister lost her 14-year-old son in March and nobody has touched his room since, this b****** rummaged through his bedroom and took his stuff. We are absolutely heartbroken.

"Valuables can be replaced. We intended for my beloved nephew's bedroom to stay exactly the way he left it, this f****** scumbag has taken that from us."

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "A man will appear in court after a burglary in Stockport.

Simon Knights of no fixed address has been charged with burglary and will appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ on Saturday 25 August.

"He has also been charged with absconding from lawful custody, which relates to an incident in March 2018 in the Suffolk area.

"Shortly after 3.15pm on Wednesday 22 August 2018, police were called to reports of a burglary at a property on Bramhall Lane South in Stockport.

"Officers attended and immediately searched the house after a man had smashed through the back door. The offender had fled the scene prior to police arrival."
