This is why you should never store a condom in your wallet or pocket

Recommended Posts

MANY people carry a hopeful condom in their wallet in case of some spontaneous rough and tumble.

But perhaps you should think twice before you reach for your old rubber in the moment of passion.

According to the clinical lead at sexual health charity FPA, storing your johnny in your wallet or pocket is not ideal.

Karin O’Sullivan said to Metro: “Heat, moisture, friction and light can affect the quality of condoms and make them less effective”.

A wallet or pocket may be handy, but those spots can be too warm for condoms as they keep them close to your body heat.

As condoms heat up, the latex can weaken, which makes them susceptible to splitting.

In addition to this, pockets or bags often have sharp objects such as keys stored in them, which can cause small holes in the wrapper or condom itself.

Not only can this render them unsafe when it comes to preventing pregnancy or STIs, it can put the rubbbers at risk of picking up germs.

And you should also reconsider storing them in your bathroom or on window sills, if they are your locations of choice.

This is because moisture, heat or direct sunlight can also damage them.

Karin explained: “Condoms should be kept where they cannot be damaged by strong heat, sharp objects, light or damp. Ideally, a bedside table, but it would also be OK to carry condoms somewhere safe in a handbag like an old sweet tin or small silk bag – not lying around at the bottom of it.

“A separate compartment in your wallet could also work but take care not to leave them there for ages – past the expiry date.”

So there you have it, pick a shaded, room temperature spot at home, and make sure you update your supplies if you are on the go so you don’t use a faulty or out of date one.

Better safe than sorry!
