Peter Handscomb working hard to pass the test on Australia A tour of India

ALREADY five months without a competitive hit Test batsman Peter Handscomb isn’t letting the frustration of a week of washouts in India upset his plans to make big runs for Australia A.

The Victorian captain took the winter off, straight after the scandalous tour of South Africa, and following an arduous 18 months with the Australian team during which he played 13 Tests.

He was picked to play both one-day and four-day games as part of the “Ä” team in India with as many as three spots in the Test batting line-up to be decided before October’s series against Pakistan.

But the first three games in Vijaywanda were all abandoned after constant rain which also limited the touring squad to indoor training sessions, impacting all players pursuit of those open Test spots.

Handscomb revealed the squad entertained themselves during the downpours with a makeshift squash court, in their hotel, using tennis racquets and tennis balls.

Conditions have been much better in Bengaluru, where the three remaining one-day matches were moved to.

Some believe Handscomb’s ability to play spin elevates him in the pecking order for the Pakistan series, but he said he wasn’t thinking actively about selection, and only about translating all his hard work in to big runs.

“I haven’t played a game for five months so I am not thinking too much about the Test tour I am just thinking about getting out there and enjoying it and, using the cliche, to play each ball as it comes down,” Handscomb said.

“Obviously there is that in the back of most of our minds and knowing that if we put some good scores together it might give us an opportunity at higher honours. But I am just looking forward to getting out there

“I am working hard, working really hard, and have been for the last few months on my own game. But once you get in to a match there is no point thinking about what might happen in a month’s time.

“You are trying to win every ball, win every contest, that’s what I am trying to do. If I can do that for as long as possible the other stuff takes cares of itself.”

Handscomb has been emailing video of his recent training efforts to coach Justin Langer, and has also been working with former Test opener Chris Rogers at the national cricket academy in Brisbane in a bid to take full advantage of the opportunity in front of him.

That same opportunity exists for several other batsmen, all vying for limited national spots, but Handscomb said no-one playing for Australia A would put their own cause above the team.

“We are not going out there with that selfish manner of wanting to score runs individually, everyone is buying in to the team thing, ”he said.

“If we win, then individually guys will have made runs and taken wickets. But it’s team first.”
