Injury history that has distrupted the career of new Sydney FC marquee

SYDNEY FC have confirmed the signing of Dutch international Siem de Jong from Ajax as their new A-League marquee.

The 29-year old, who can play as an attacking midfielder or a striker, arrives on a season-long loan with an impressive resume, but one glaring piece of evidence suggests the Sky Blues’ medical team may be the most important determinant of how successful his signing proves.

Since 2011-12, De Jong has spent a jaw dropping 507 days sidelined across 12 different injury layoffs according to transfermarkt.com.

During that time, he missed a staggering 121 matches – a worrying indication of the caveat that could conceivably threaten to derail his ability to thrive with the A-League heavyweights.

In fact, the Dutchman has a penchant for freak injuries, including one particular incident which saw him fearing blindness after a training-ground incident involving a Newcastle United teammate.

“Emmanuel Riviere wanted to turn, tried to hold me back and his finger went straight in my eye, with full force,” De Jong once recalled.

“I was concerned I would lose my sight, especially on that first day.

“It was pretty scary. When I went to the hospital, I couldn’t see out of my right eye.

“It wasn’t just an eye injury, my retina had detached as well.

“My career would have been over. If you can’t see with one eye you can’t play.

“I had to get laser treatment on it, but after a few hours I got a little bit of blurred vision back.

“I’ve had a lot of tests since and it’s all good now.”

His shocking luck has seen him labelled injury-prone, and last year De Jong told The Sun that he was determined to shake the tag.

“I understand why people talk about it but it’s almost more health issues than injuries,” he said.

“If you look at the three big injuries I’ve had - two collapsed lungs and my eye - they’ve had nothing to do with football.

“But after the first collapsed lung, my career changed a lot.

“I used to play 40-50 games a year. After that I suffered a lot of small injuries.

“It cost me at least two or three years of my career, right in the middle of it. It was not good timing.

“But now I don’t want to be in the news for negative reasons.

“I still feel like I have a lot to give.

“I’m 28, it’s cost me years of my career, but I’m at a good age and I feel better than I ever was.

“I feel I can back to same level I was at when I was 24.”

Aside from his well-documented injury troubles, which includes two separate collapsed lungs and recurring calf and thigh issues, Sydney FC appear to have snapped up a seriously well-credentialed European pro.

De Jong boasts 95 career goals and 55 assists across 326 professional club appearances, in a career which spans a long period in the Dutch top flight, a brief stint in the Premier League and a number of matches in both the Champions League and Europa League.

Beginning his career with Dutch giants Ajax, the attacker spent seven years at his boyhood club, registering 57 goals in 168 appearances or a net-bulger once in roughly every three matches and even spent a period as captain. He then signed for Newcastle United in the English top flight as injuries began to blight his progress.

De Jong managed just 22 appearances on Tyneside, including one sole Premier League goal – which came in the 87th minute of a 3-2 loss to Swansea – as he was loaned out to PSV Eindhoven in a return to the Eredivisie.

Six goals in 19 top tier matches for PSV earned him a permanent move back to Ajax in 2017, but he managed just 21 appearances last season as he was utilised largely off the bench.

Sydney FC coach Steve Corica says the new signing could make his debut for the club as they take to the field in the FFA Cup quarter finals next month.
