American Horror Story Season 8: Taissa Farmiga Playing Murder House & Coven Roles

The most recent in a flurry of casting announcements from the American Horror Story: Apocalypse camp, Taissa Farmiga will play double duty in the newest season, reprising roles from both Murder House (season 1) and Coven (season 3). Farmiga will return as both her season 1 and 3 characters, but there has yet to be any mention of Farmiga's third character, Sophie Green, from Roanoke (season 6).

After the release of a disturbing trailer, AHS fans have been made privy to a constant flow of information as it pertains to the casting of the latest season. Breaking from the show's standalone format, season 8 will be a crossover of the first and third seasons. In Murder House, Farmiga, Violet Harmon, dated Evan Peters' character Tate Langdon, a ghost who rapes Violet's mother, impregnating her with the antichrist. At the end of the season the entire Harmon family is dead, aside from the spawn of Violet's mother and Tate – named Michael – who is adopted by Jessica Lange's character. The birth of the antichrist lends itself well to this season's apocalypse theme. What's more elusive is the way Farmiga's Coven character, Zoe Benson, will fit into the storyline. Zoe is a young girl taken away from her family to Miss Robichaux's Academy after discovering her witch powers.

The Wrap revealed Thursday that Connie Britton had joined the Apocalypse cast, and today informed fans that Farmiga will be joining her in dual roles. Jessica Lange and Dylan McDermott are also on board to reprise their season 1 characters, Constance Langdon and Ben Harmon, respectively. Lily Rabe, Emma Roberts and Frances Conroy are set to play their Coven characters: Misty Day, Madison Montgomery and Myrtle Snow.

However, Taissa Farmiga is not the only star taking on an additional role in the upcoming season. AHS regular, Sarah Paulson, has decided to one-up Taissa, adding a third character to her roster. The actress is playing both her Murder House and Coven characters, Billie Dean Howard and Cordelia Goode. Additionally, Paulson will portray a new character named Venable, who has already been featured in an ominous teaser released this past week.

The undeniably terrifying theme of this latest season, combined with the return of a few beloved characters and the continuation of the intense birth of the antichrist/end of days story, make this season of AHS even more highly anticipated than usual. Murder House's plot set the initial tone for the long-standing show, which was just renewed for a 10th season. Fans are thrilled to finally know the fate of the Harmons, as well as that of humankind, once Michael's reign of terror begins.

American Horror Story season 8 premieres September 12 on FX.
