Liverpool go top after win over Brighton as Manchester City drop points

LIVERPOOL sit on top of the Premier League after a 1-0 win over Brighton after reigning champions Manchester City failed to take full points from their clash with Wolves.

City went behind before grabbing an equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Molineux.

Arsenal registered their first ever win under new manager Unai Emery in a 3-1 win over West Ham, while a 92nd minute strike from centre-back Harry Maguire snatched a dramatic 2-1 win for Leicester over Southampton.

Huddersfield and Cardiff couldn’t be split after 90 minutes in a 0-0 draw, as Socceroo Aaron Mooy returned to action following the birth of his second child.

HERE’S A FULL WRAP OF THE OVERNIGHT PREMIER LEAGUE ACTION...

WOLVES 1-1 MANCHESTER CITY
Champions Manchester City’s scintillating start to the Premier League season came to a halt as newly-promoted Wolves held Pep Guardiola’s men 1-1 at Molineaux on Saturday.

The hosts were well worth a point having attacked City in a fashion precious few sides did last season, but also had luck in their side when Willy Boly’s opener was allowed to stand despite the final touch clearly coming off the defender’s hand.

City struck back through an unlikely source as Aymeric Laporte grabbed his first goal for the club with a thumping header, and only the woodwork denied the visitors all three points when Sergio Aguero’s free-kick came back off the bar in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

LIVERPOOL 1-0 BRIGHTON
Mohamed Salah extended his extraordinary scoring run at Anfield on Saturday when Liverpool beat Brighton 1-0 to make it three wins out of three without conceding in the Premier League.

The Egypt forward curled a low shot inside the far post in the 23rd minute to make it 29 goals in as many home matches since joining Liverpool in 2017. It maintained a 16-month undefeated league run at home, where Liverpool has now scored 20 goals without reply - the club’s best run in two decades.

The only concerns for the hosts were largely of their own making, with goalkeeper Alisson twice almost caught in possession.

Early in the first half, the 25-year-old Brazilian came racing out for a through ball but failed to connect properly in a challenge with Solly March. He was fortunate the Brighton player’s poor control sent the ball out for a goal kick. Alisson did, however, parry Pascal Gross’ header in the second half.

ARSENAL 3-1 WEST HAM
Arsenal did just enough to get a first Premier League win under new manager Unai Emery at the third attempt.

The Gunners came from behind to beat West Ham 3-1 on Saturday, with the help of a fortuitous own-goal.

West Ham opened the scoring after Felipe Anderson and Marko Arnautovic exchanged passes down the left before Austria striker Arnautovic unleashed a 20-yard shot that beat Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech in the 25th minute.

The visitors’ lead didn’t last long after right back Hector Bellerin broke free from West Ham’s defense and ran toward the byline. Bellerin whipped in a cross that flew by several Arsenal players right in front of goal, but the ball fell to unmarked left back Nacho Monreal who slammed it past West Ham keeper Lukasz Fabianski in the 30th.

Arsenal got some good fortune in the 70th when West Ham failed to clear the ball and Aaron Ramsey headed it back into the area. The ball fell to substitute Alexandre Lacazette whose attempted cross ricocheted off West Ham defender Issa Diop’s chest and in for an own-goal.

It was just the bit of luck that Emery was searching for as Arsenal struggled to control the game for long stretches.

Substitute Danny Welbeck sealed the victory in stoppage time, when Bellerin found him unmarked in the area.

BOURNEMOUTH 2-2 EVERTON
Bournemouth scored twice in five second-half minutes to claim a 2-2 draw with Everton after both sides were reduced to 10 men in the Premier League on Saturday.

Goals from Theo Walcott and Michael Keane put Marco Silva’s Everton on course for three points at the Vitality Stadium following Richarlison’s red card for headbutting Adam Smith in the 41st minute.

But the hosts, who had Smith dismissed in the 61st minute for bringing down Walcott with the score 1-0, halved the deficit through Joshua King’s penalty before Nathan Ake tapped in the leveler in the 79th.

The game ended with concern for Everton defender Keane after he left the field on a stretcher following a collision with teammate Idrissa Gueye.

SOUTHAMPTON 1-2 LEICESTER CITY
England World Cup defender Harry Maguire drilled in a late stoppage-time winner to help Claude Puel get one over his former club as Leicester defeated 10-man Southampton 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday. Ryan Bertrand’s venomous shot, on his 150th appearance for the club, had put the hosts in front in the 52nd minute before Demarai Gray equalized four minutes later.

Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was then sent off for a second bookable offence after he dived in Leicester’s box in the 77th minute. Victory was sweet for Leicester’s French coach Puel, who was sacked last year despite guiding Southampton to the League Cup final and producing an eighth- place finish in the league.

Southampton’s wait for a first win of the season goes on, while Mark Hughes’ men now boast just three victories in their last 28 home league games.

HUDDERSFIELD 0-0 CARDIFF
Huddersfield earned its first Premier League point of the season with a 0-0 draw against Cardiff on Saturday.

After heavy defeats to Manchester City (6-1) and Chelsea (3-0), 10-man Huddersfield held off Cardiff, which has still to score in the league after two draws and one defeat.

Jonathan Hogg was sent off in the 63rd minute of a game between two sides tipped as relegation candidates.

Hogg appeared aggravated by Cardiff’s Harry Arter but responded badly - first pushing forward with his head, then shoving the midfielder to the ground.

That gave Cardiff time to press for a win which had never previously seemed likely, but the Welsh visitors couldn’t find a way through.
