Broncos captain Darius Boyd has urged Dylan Napa to change his tackling technique

BRONCOS skipper Darius Boyd has urged former Queensland teammate Dylan Napa to change his tackling technique after knocking Andrew McCullough out cold with headhigh hit at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.

The Roosters firebrand has come under intense criticism for the hit, which was similar to one earlier in the season that resulted in a broken jaw to Broncos forward Korbin Sims.

McCullough laid prone on the ground with obvious concussion symptoms after Napa tackled him, appearing to lead with his head and copping the Broncos’ hooker high.

Although Boyd said he didn’t want to comment too much on the incident, he said Napa’s technique needs to be looked at.

“I don’t want to comment on it too much, but he's an aggressive player. It probably has something to do with his technique, definitely,” Boyd said.

“It doesn’t happen by chance a couple of times. It’s probably something he needs to look at.”

It is now up to the NRL’s match review committee to decide if Napa’s hit was legal as he escaped charge back in Round 11, to the disappointment of CEO Todd Greenberg.

At the time, Broncos coach Wayne Bennett criticised the decision, but chose to put the onus on the NRL after Saturday’s game.

“I had a lot to say about it last time, it’s now up to the NRL, it’s not up to me,” he said.

“I stood up for my player then and made my feelings known to everybody, it’s up to the NRL to do what they want to do.”

Roosters coach Trent Robinson agreed, saying the MRC will now need to decide what constitutes a legal tackle.

“To be honest I don’t know,” Robinson said when asked if it was a fair tackle.

“This is pretty unique and we talked about it enough last time we just need to see what they deem as a tackle this time.”

Robinson also defended Napa’s aggression and rubbished any suggestion it could be deemed a shoulder charge.

“He’s a physical player an he’s aggressive in the way he goes about that play,” Robinson said.

“The first thing is, it’s not good to see Andrew in that way.

“I also support ‘Naps’ and the way that he plays the game and people will enjoy the physicality that he plays with, and I guess that’s where the discussion will lie over the next few days.

“He’s definitely going to tackle him, it’s not a shoulder charge because his arms are out. I think it will be whether it’s deemed OK to tackle that way.”
