Darren Weir slams the Moonee Valley track after on-pacers dominate meeting

Recommended Posts

PREMIER trainer Darren Weir blasted Moonee Valley’s bias towards on-pacers, saying the track was “racing terrible”.

“Horses which get back have no hope,” Weir said. “Five or six races, five or six leaders. Moonee Valley they can usually win from anywhere.

“Moonee Valley needs to do something about that. If they’re telling people early in the week it’s going to be on speed, they need to do something about it.

“Horses today find the fence win, come out you know you can’t win.”

Weir was deputising for Jarrod McLean after his frontrunner Trap For Fools won. Later, Weir was the recipient of the bias when Theanswermyfriend won.

# DANNY Laws will nominate Tiffany’s Lass, who won the Woodside Park Stud (2500m), for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. Laws, who runs a stock brand business, trains only a couple of horses and said her win was the highlight of his training career, The only other horse he trains is Tiffany’s Belle, which is Tiffany’s Lass sister.

# MERRIEST continued her amazing second-up record when she won for the fourth time from six starts. Her trainer Danny O’Brien said her rider Damien Oliver persevered in the early stages to get first use of the ground next to the fence.

“She’s a very capable mare. She just tends to need the first run back to give her a bit of raceday experience before she’s ready to go.”

O’Brien will target the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on September 15 with her. Oliver was suspended for eight meetings from that ride and he will begin it after he rides at Caulfield next Saturday.

DID YOU SEE/HEAR
MELBOURNE racing lost one its bookmaking giants on Friday night when the leader of the betting ring in the 1980s and 1990s Graeme Sampieri passed away after a short illness. Sampieri was a bookie for 52 years and he was the first bookie in Melbourne to turn over a $1 million in a day. Victorian Bookmakers’ Association Chairman Lyndon Hsu said “A wonderful gentleman of the turf who never said no. Was a very generous person and lots of people owed him and he never collected! Greatly respected by everyone in racing circles.” His three children are all bookmakers.

WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING
ANDREW Balding announced Count Octave will be set for the Melbourne Cup after he finished second to Stradivarius in the Londsale Cup on Friday night at York. The son of Frankel raced by Qatar Racing will carry the same colours as Dunaden. Stradivarius made it four consecutive feature staying race wins and took out a $1.75 million bonus.

EXCUSES, EXCUSES
MULTAJA — Dwayne Dunn had no choice but to try and assume the lead in gthe early stages with the way the track was racing so she had to work early. In the finish she went down in a bobbing finish.

ODEON — One of many ridden out of their comfort zone taking on Theanswermyfriend in front which brought about his undoing.

BACK ME
OUR VENICE BEACH — Great Australian debut from this stayer. The further the better for him.

QUILISTA — Beaten for speed but ran on well for fourth behind Faatinah.

SIKANDARABAD — Made up many lengths for third behind Trap For Fools.

SACK ME
SUMMER SHAM — Led and tired. She’s going terribly.

QUOTE
“You won’t see a better losing ride,” Dean Yendall after he finished second on Romanesque.

TAB BETTING REVIEW

MOONEE VALLEY

RACE ONE

Late money told the story in the opener at Moonee Valley when Merriest led throughout for trainer Danny O’Brien. Hovering around the $5.50-$5 mark throughout the day, a late flurry of activity saw it firm into $4.80 and go around as the most popular runner in terms of money taken. Merriest led and held off the gallant Tulip ($3.10-$7) which sat outside the leader. It was also TAB’s Beat The Bookie horse. Third went to race favourite Iconoclasm ($5-$3.90).

BETS: Merriest $3,000 @ $5, Tulip $3,000 @ $7

RACE TWO
Strike Force ($7) was one of the more popular runners in race two on the card and landed the money for its backers. The six-year-old replicated the effort of Merriest in the opener by leading throughout, beating Romanesque ($19) which was $101 earlier in the week. The Avenger ($16) filled the minor end of the prize in front of The Passage ($3.80) which was as short as $3.10 at one point during the day. The Passage was easily the most popular runner and held nearly three times as much as Strike Force. The winner was as much as $9 on Wednesday.

BETS: Strike Force $1,000 @ $7, $1,000 @ $6.50, The Passage $6,000 @ $3.90, $3,000 @ $3.40.

RACE THREE
Punters were reeling after Sweet Rockette ($19) beat the favourite Multaja right on the line in the MSC Signs Plate (1200 metres). The Michelle Payne-trained and ridden Sweet Rockette overcame a wide run over the latter stages to beat the heavily tried Multaja ($1.60) which was one of the best backed runners in the country. James Cummings’ favourite sat outside Belzella ($17-$9.50) and put paid to that runner on the turn, however, couldn’t repel the winner at the end. Multaja held 75 percent of the total investment and was very popular through multis as well.

BETS: Multaja $15,000 @ $1.75 (taken Friday), $6,000 @ $1.60, $4,000 @ $1.60, $32,000 @ $1.14 PLACE

RACE FOUR
Tiffany’s Lass made it three leaders from four races after being rated a treat by Stephanie Thornton. Hovering around the $5-$6 mark throughout betting, Tiffany’s Lass was too good for Fontein Lad ($7) which trailed it throughout, with Zilbiyr holding third at $8.50. In one of the more open races of the day, there was also decent backing for Pioneertown, Thunder Cloud, Big Hammer and others.

RACE FIVE
N/A

RACE SIX
Trap For Fools made it another leader to be successful after going all the way in the 1Print Handicap (2040 metres). The Jarrod McLean runner was rated perfectly by Brad Rawiller and TAB customers did try it at the $5 in betting. In fact, the winner was the best backed runner outside of Pacodali, which bottomed out at $4.20 before blowing out late to $6. Our Venice Beach ($10) and Sikandarabad, the latter tried at $5.50, filled the minors. Of the others, the late push was for Mantastic ($6-$4.80-$5) which had every chance behind the leader but couldn’t finish off.

BETS: Trap For Fools $1,000 @ $5.50, $1,300 @ $5, $1,000 @ $4.80 TWICE

RACE SEVEN
One of the best backed runners in the country all day was the odds-on favourite, Brutal. The Team Hawkes-trained runner was 10 times as popular as any other runner despite going around at $1.55. Doing a bit of work on the speed, jockey Dwayne Dunn pushed the go-button on the turn and he overhauled Tavisan ($31) over the concluding stages. Leonardo Da Hinchi ($7) grabbed the minor end of the prize.

BETS: Brutal $25,000 @ $1.08 (PLACE), $10,000 @ $1.85 & $10,000 @ $1.80 (taken yesterday), $4,999 @ $1.60, $8,900 @ $1.50, $6,500 @ $1.50

RACE EIGHT
The SAJ Fruit Supply Carlyon Stakes (1000 metres) wasn’t a race for favourite backers even though $6.50 chance Faatinah was successful. Most of the money, in fact 67 percent of it, was with Hey Doc ($3.90-$4.60) and Super Too ($5-$3.90-$4.60) while Faatinah actually drifted after being $4.40 in the morning. Tracking the clear leader Sunday Escape ($71), jockey Regan Bayliss timed his run to perfection with Faatinah which got the better of the roughie over the concluding stages. Mr Sneaky ($6) made up significant ground to finish third.

BETS: Faatinah $2,000 @ $6, $1,500 @ $5.50, Super Too $10,000 @ $4, Hey Doc $3,000 @ $4.

RACE NINE
It was a good way to finish for punters at Moonee Valley when Theanswermyfriend landed several big bets. The Darren Weir-trained runner was more than three times as popular as anything else and firmed from $3.90 to $2.70 throughout the day. Mark Zahra was able to dictate terms perfectly on the galloper who made it yet another leader to be successful. Malaise ($12) and Moss ‘N’ Dale ($4.80) charged home to grab second and third just in front of Odeon ($7.50-$9.50) which was forced to sit outside the leader.

BETS: Theanswermyfriend $1,575 @ $3.90, $1,000 @ $3.70, $1,000 @ $3.60 MULTIPLE TIMES, $3,000 @ $3.50, $2,000 @ $3.50, $2,000 @ $3.10, $1,000 @ $3, $2,900 @ $2.70, $2,000 @ $2.70 MULTIPLE TIMES, $2,000 @ $2.60
