Barrier trials become auditions for The Everest with Star performance

Recommended Posts

WHO would have thought barrier trials would become selection auditions for Australia’s richest race?

Invincible Star secured her slot last week despite having not raced since November.

Her two recent trials have been the talk of the town in Sydney and led to the expectation she is going to be the big improver among the sprinters this spring.

Certainly, she has significant upside and did have the likes of (Everest rival) Trapeze Artist and (Everest hopeful) Kementari in her wake when second to Merchant Navy in November.

But it’s interesting to note the barrier trials were a bigger lure to pull the trigger on an Everest slot than Le Romain’s thumping win in fast time under 61kg last week.

That leaves two slots remaining, with those being Max Whitby and Neil Werrett (who originally had Menari) and the ATC.

Saturday’s Memsie is shaping as a key Everest reference.

Vega Magic is the likely favourite and already in The Everest.

Godolphin’s Kementari is thought to be the ATC’s preference at this stage and is headed south for a crack at Vega.

The one runner that hasn’t attracted an ounce of Everest discussion is Happy Clapper.

Will that change if he rolls Vega and Kementari on Saturday?

Sure, he hasn’t raced over 1200m for an age, but he did set the Randwick 1300m track record first up last prep before completing the Epsom-Doncaster double with 57kg in both. He also ran Winx to less than a length in the Ryder.

Happy Clapper’s connections have indicated they would love to take up an Everest offer but are resigned to him being overlooked.

They are entitled to be miffed that no one has come knocking given the CV their horse has.

TVERSKY JUST TERRIFIC
TVERSKY made it two from two this time in when calling on reserves of courage to win the Benchmark 85 Handicap at Caloundra. Jockey Dale Smith said he felt runner-up Arena Salon would beat him several times in the straight.

Smith, a former Victorian jockey, said: “He’s the toughest horse I’ve ridden up here.

“That was good fight.

‘‘He just dug deep.

‘‘The other horse got in front, but he gritted the teeth and showed a lot of tenacity.”
