Unbeaten Graff earns high praise from Kris Lees after San Domenico Stakes success

Recommended Posts

“HE’S the best colt I’ve had anything to do with — a really exciting horse.’’

This was trainer Kris Lees initial comment after talented Graff maintained his unbeaten record with a brilliant win in the Group 3 $150,000 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Lees, the champion Newcastle trainer, isn’t prone to hyperbole which makes his opinion of Graff even more noteworthy.

“He’s a pretty serious horse,’’ Lees said. “I’m really pleased with how he’s come back and I think there’s some nice races in store for him.’’

Graff ($5.50) trailed leader Neutrality ($4.40 favourite) into the straight then accelerated brilliantly to score by two-and-a-half lengths. Performer ($5.50) was a further one-and-a-quarter lengths away third.

Owner Alan Bell, who purchased Graff for $200,000 at the Magic Millions Yearling Sales last year, is a renowned judge of a thoroughbred and he also has a high opinion of his rising star.

“This colt has always shown us a lot of ability and to see him win today is a good sign because the San Domenico Stakes is a good horse’s race,’’ Bell said.

Since 1995, no fewer than 12 San Domenico Stakes winners trained on to win at Group 1 level — Our Maizcay (1995), General Nediym (1997), Testa Rossa (1999), Mistegic (2001), Regimental Gal (2003), Charge Forward (2004), Gold Edition (2006), Duporth (2008), Shellscrape (2009), Foxwedge (2011), Snitzerland (2012) and Japonisme (2015) — and Graff certainly has the potential to join this group.

This was Bell’s second win in the San Domenico Stakes in three after Star Turn’s 2016 success.

Star Turn trained on to win the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes and was four-times Group 1 placed that season before being sold to stand at Vinery Stud.

Graff, who is by Star Turn’s sire Star Witness, is out of Dinkum Diamond which gave Bell the inspiration for the colt’s name.

“I’ve named the horse after (businessman and jeweller) Laurence Graff, the founder of Graff Diamonds,’’ Bell said.

Lees confirmed Graff will go to the Group 2 $200,000 Run To The Rose (1200m) at Rosehill on September 8 before the Group 1 $1 million Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill on September 22.

“He could be (a miler), easy,’’ Lees said. “He’s got that type of attitude and he’s quite relaxed in his work at home. He’s got a very bright future.”

Lees has a powerful team of three-year-olds this season including unbeaten duo Smart Melody and Gem Song, and boom filly Miss Fabulass.

“It’s early days but we have some firepower there,’’ Lees said. “We will try to keep them apart as much as possible.

Jason Collett, Graff’s jockey, described the colt’s runaway win as “quite easy in the end”.

“Graff started to really pull me into it 700-800m out and I thought ease up boy, it’s a bit of testing track out there at the moment, but he had no problems with it,’’ Collett said.

“He’s a bit of lad, physically there is still improvement to come with him, he only had the on trial going into today. He’s won over 1300m, so 1400m will be fine, see it as no concern stepping him up in trip.’

Neutrality tried hard to lead throughout and although he was no match for Graff’s finishing sprint over the final 400m, he comfortably held the remainder of the field in the run to the line.

Kerrin McEvoy, rider of Neutrality, was pleased with the colt’s effort and suggested he would be better on a firmer track,

Performer’s game effort to close for third pleased jockey Hugh Bowman.

“I was very happy with him it was a good performance, he’s back in great order,’’ Bowman said.

TAB BETTING REVIEW

ROSEHILL GARDENS

RACE ONE

All Too Soon was $6.50-$8 on the day but that didn’t matter in the Hachem Management Group Handicap (1500 metres). TAB customers took an eachway approach to the David Payne filly which produced a devastating turn of foot down the straight to overhaul the well-tried Eugen’s Pick and the leader Mandylion. All Too Soon was one of the best backed runners in the race with only Mandylion, Bella Success and Eugene’s Pick holding more. Of the others, Bella Success ($7.50-$6) was subject of a move throughout the day and ran on reasonably from the rear.

BETS: All Too Soon $1,000 x $500 e/w @ $6.50/$2.20, Mandylion $5,000 @ $4.60, Bella Success $5,000 @ $7.
RACE TWO
Although Royal Stamp ($6-$7) was in the market it was largely forgotten by punters who preferred to back several others in the FIIG Handicap (2000 metres). The Marc Conners-trained runner came down the centre of the track with Rachel King aboard, swamping her rivals to beat Estikhraaj ($8.50) and Letter to Juliette ($6.50). Impavido ($4.40-$5.50) went around as the most popular runner, holding just over 33 percent of the total investment, while Itsa Fait Accompli ($7.50) had admirers as did Imanui ($26-$10) at a price.

RACE THREE
Common Purpose defied the betting drift to land the money in the TAB Highway 1100 metres). The John Bateman-trained runner did it tough and went $2.70-$3.80 in betting but managed to hold off a wall of horses to get the money over Equal Balance ($5) and Highway Sixtysix ($4.20-$5) which flew home from the rear to be close up.

BETS: Common Purpose $15,000 2 $3.40 (taken Friday), $4,000 @ $3.10, Highway Sixtysix $2,053 @ $4.80, $3,000 @ $4.60, Risk And Reward $3,000 e/w @ $8/$2.50.
RACE FOUR
Za Zi Ba ($8.50-$7.50-$5.50) was an impressive winner of the Lindt Handicap (1100 metres).

The Brad Widdup runner came down the centre of the track to finish off powerfully over the drifting She Knows, $3.50-$7, and the well fancied Single Bullet ($4.40-$3.50-$4.60). Single Bullet was nearly twice as popular as the next best supported runner in Sanglier ($5) and held 46 percent of the total investment.

BETS: Single Bullet $2,000 @ $3.60, $1,700 @ $3.60, $3,000 @ $3.50
RACE FIVE
Graff was one of the firmers in the San Domenico Stakes (1100 metres) and the landed the money in the Group Three. Ridden just behind the speed by Jason Collett, Graff stayed along the inside while leader and race favourite Neutrality ($4.40) came off the fence. The pair fought out the finish with Graff ($7.50-$8-$5.50) landing the money over Neutrality, which was as much as $8 on Wednesday. Performer, the one-time favourite, was $4-$5.50 and filled third. Neutrality and Performer were easily the best tried in the race and held nearly 60 percent of the market.

BETS: Graff $1,000 e/w @ $7.50/$2.30, Neutrality $8,000 @ $4.40, Performer $5,000 @ $4.40.
RACE SIX
Danawi was a popular result with TAB customers despite the drift in winning the Visit Monaco Ming Dynasty (1400 metres). The Tim Martin-trained runner attracted a number of big bets, opening at $4.60 and getting into $3.90 by Friday before getting back out to $4.80 at the jump. Leading throughout, James Innes Jnr got the best out of Danawi in holding off $61 shot Mizzy. Dealmaker, at $26, rounded out the trifecta. Of the unplaced brigade, Signore Fox was smashed throughout the week after opening at $15. Bottoming out at $4.60, the Team Snowden runner jumped a $5 chance.

BETS: Danawi $5,000 @ $4.60, $4,884 @ $4
RACE SEVEN
Avilius ($1.85-$1.65-$1.75) produced a brilliant finishing burst to land the cash in the New Caledonia Travel Connection Premier’s Cup (1900 metres). Locked away on the fence approaching the home turn, jockey Glyn Schofield pulled him out to the centre of the track and the Godolphin runner did the rest, overhauling I Am Serious ($9-$5) over the concluding stages. Testashadow ($26) was a distant third. While Avilius was popular and held more than half the total investment, the push for I Am Serious was strong with the Chris Waller runner easily the best tried outside the fav.

BETS: Avilius $3,750 @ $1.80, $11,250 @ $1.75, $5,000 @ $1.75, $4,000 @ $1.70, $3,000 @ $1.65
RACE EIGHT
The late money was the telling factor with Don’t Give A Damn ($6-$5-$4.60) getting the money over the easing favourite, Trekking. The Danny Williams runner was kept safe in betting but over the final stages of betting, Don’t Give A Damn and Renewal were the two TAB punters wanted which meant Trekking ($3.10-$3.80) went out the gate. Don’t Give A Damn came down the outside part of the track to hold off Trekking which followed it out there. Renewal ($5.50-$4 late) finished off nicely for third after missing the start slightly. Of the others, Miss Que ($5.50-$7-$6.50) attracted some good backing and held just as much as Renewal did.

BETS: Don’t Give A Damn $6,000 @ $5.50, Trekking $7,000 @ $3.80
RACE NINE
Paret provided TAB with a horror result in the final event on the program. Continuing on the theme in recent weeks of heavily backed horses taking out the last race, Paret ($2.40-$2) swept to the front at the 300 metre mark and landed several big bets. The Chris Waller runner held over 70 percent of the money and was very popular with multi players too. Level Eight ($41) and Mapmaker ($6) filled the minors but it was all Paret which went around nearly 10 times as popular as anything else.

BETS: Paret $5,000 @ $2.40, $9,687 @ $2.10, $7,000 @ $2, $3,000 @ $2
