40,000 fans flock to The Bend for first race

MORE than 40,000 petrolheads will be able to make the ultimate motorsport boast decades from now — “I was there for the first one at The Bend”.

On the third day of the first Supercars round at The Bend Motorsport event on Sunday, 17,100 race fans added to the 15,700 on Saturday and 8450 on Friday, totalling 41,250.

On a day dominated by Holden’s Red Bull team with a 1-2 finish, winner Jamie Whincup declared: “It is great to come away with a win on the first weekend at The Bend’’.

Early in the 200km race two, South Aussie favourite Tim Slade was the pride of the state when he rounded turn one in second place, but was quickly reeled in, locked a wheel on lap 34 and finished in fourth.

The other South Aussies Nick Percat, Scott Pye and Todd Hazelwood finished 5th, 6th and 25th respectively.

Saturday winner, Red Bull Holden driver Shane van Gisbergen fell just short of repeating the feat on Sunday, finishing second to teammate Jamie Whincup, followed by David Reynolds in the Erebus Holden.

But his two-race result was enough to allow van Gisbergen to overtake Ford Shell V-Power racing’s Scott McLaughlin as the championship leader.

Off the track a highlight was the ominous and deafening boom, boom, boom of a demonstration jet-car which warned the crowd that the 300km/h rocket was about to hurtle down the main straight.

Ford and Scott McLaughlin fan David Williams, 24, appreciated the motorsport priorities of the crowd over the traditional Clipsal 500 fanbase who came for the parties.
