Top Apple analyst sees delay for 6.1-inch LCD Apple iPhone, says it will outsell the OLED models

Since top Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo left KGI securities, we haven't heard as much from him as we usually do this time of the year. After all, we could be just a tad more than two weeks away from the eagerly anticipated unveiling of the 2018 Apple iPhone models. We expect to see two units sporting OLED panels (5.8-inch and 6.5-inch) and one cheaper iPhone model carrying an LCD screen (6.1-inches).

In a research report to clients that was viewed by AppleInsider, Kuo sees a delay for the 6.1-inch iPhone, which dovetails with earlier reports. The good news is that the analyst expects the phone to be powered by the same A12 SoC that will be found in the OLED units. Previous speculation called for the LCD model to contain an older chipset such as the A10 Fusion deployed in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Kuo sees the lower priced 6.1-inch iPhone, priced in the $600-$700 range, capturing 50 to 55% of total unit sales through the end of the year, and as much as 70% throughout 2019. The analyst sees the 5.8-inch unit priced between $800 and $900, with a price tag of at least $999 for the 6.5-inch handset. All three models will sport the TrueDepth Camera and feature Face ID (see graph from TF International at the top of this article).

The analyst says that the Apple Pencil will not be compatible with any of the 2018 iPhones, and in certain markets the 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch models will offer dual SIM capabilities. The unveiling of Apple's new iPhone lineup is expected to take place on September 12th.
