Esava Ratugolea, Tom Bugg and Tyson Goldsack among players pushing AFL case

A number of big names and forgotten players will get their chance to push for AFL finals selection in this week’s VFL finals.

Casey will face Geelong this weekend, in an interesting lead-in to next week’s crunch elimination final between Melbourne and the Cats.

Geelong big man Esava Ratugolea will get his opportunity to push for senior selection, while Demons Tom Bugg, Jayden Hunt, Jeff Garlett, Cam Pedersen and Joel Smith could all feature for Casey.

“Esava Ratugolea is a big chance to play against Melbourne on Friday week,” Herald Sun AFL reporter Jon Ralph said on Fox Sports News’ AFL Tonight.
“Now of course he needs to perform strongly — he had 10 possessions last week, he plays against Casey in the second game back from a broken leg.

“Now at Melbourne, Tom Bugg gets a really good chance to push for Dean Kent’s spot — of course Kent might be out for a couple of weeks with that AC joint injury.

“You figure Jack Viney takes Dom Tyson’s spot but a couple of players pushing hard there.”

Hawthorn’s James Sicily and Grant Birchall could potentially feature for Box Hill in their final against Port Melbourne.

“James Sicily needs that medical clearance with his broken wrist,” Ralph said.

“I think until we see Birchall in those Hawthorn colours, we won’t be celebrating given the amount of false starts there.”

Meanwhile, veteran Collingwood defender Tyson Goldsack could push for a miracle senior return when the Pies face Essendon in their VFL final.

“At Collingwood, Adam Treloar probably not likely to play there but Tyson Goldsack will play in that Collingwood final and push really hard to try and potentially

take that back six spot from Nathan Murphy there,” Ralph said.

“So a lot of players that need to really make every post a winner.”

Richmond is set to rest Kane Lambert, with the midfielder poised to return via the AFL in the qualifying final. But young forward Dan Butler should get minutes in the VFL as Richmond face Williamstown.

“For the Tigers though, the second year in a row, almost at full strength, such a strong position to be in,” Ralph said.
