West Coast Eagles well placed for flag assault, says coach Adam Simpson

West Coast coach Adam Simpson believes the experiences gained from three previous finals campaigns have been a key reason why the Eagles are well placed to challenge for this year’s premiership.

The Eagles finished the home and away season in second place and will host Collingwood in a qualifying final at Optus Stadium on September 8.

Vice-captain Josh Kennedy is expected to return from a leg injury to face the Magpies and he could be one of 13 Eagles from the 2015 grand final to play next week.

Simpson said they knew what it took to be successful.

“We’ve been together for a while now. This is our fifth year with me obviously as the senior coach,” Simpson said.

“A lot of our players have been there from the start and have a bit more experience. You go through the highs and lows of success.

“It’s our fourth (finals) campaign now in a row. It’s a good achievement from the players. They just seem a bit more mature every year.

“We’ve been top two or three for 17 weeks. I think the consistency of the group and the maturity has been there all year. Going into the season, there was a bit of the unknown with a different looking side but the reality is we’ve been thereabouts for almost all of the season. There’s no reason why we can’t continue that.”

Collingwood haven’t played finals since 2013 and more than half of the players will be making their finals debut. The Magpies are also facing the challenge of winning their first interstate final since 2008.

West Coast are determined to make the most of their home ground advantage. Finishing second means they will play their next two finals at Optus Stadium. With Richmond, Hawthorn and the Magpies also in the top four, the only other venue they will play at during the finals is the MCG.

Simpson said the club’s decision to build a new facility at Lathlain Park with one oval the size of Optus Stadium and one the size of the MCG had contributed to the team’s success.

The Eagles will train at Subiaco Oval tomorrow, then move to Lathlain Park on Friday before having two sessions at Optus Stadium next week. West Coast have had only one training session at Optus Stadium before their home games all season.

“It’s fantastic. That’s why you get in the top two - for that type of advantage,” Simpson said.

“Top four was a fantastic effort for us and on the weekend to get the top two gives

“To have the foresight to look into the future several years ago and develop the land we’ve got, and have the two ovals - it’s helped us.

“We trained there pre-season and we feel more comfortable on the bigger ovals. As much as I’ve never claimed that the size of an oval effects the way you play, it hasn’t hurt this year to have those ovals available.”
