Sudanese-Australian guard Deng Adel reportedly signs training camp deal

Recommended Posts

DENG Adel is the latest Australian to earn a training camp deal, with the Minnesota Timberwolves taking a chance on the athletic wing.

The news was first reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, and the non-guaranteed contract gives the 22-year-old the chance to earn a spot on a roster that could use a player with his skillset.

Born in what is now South Sudan, before moving to Melbourne, Adel went undrafted in June’s 2018 NBA Draft, after his junior season at the University of Louisville.

Adel played with the Houston Rockets in the NBA Summer League, averaging 8.3 points per game, in the four contests he suited up for.

In his final year as a Cardinal, Adel averaged 14.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, leading his team in scoring.

Though Adel’s contract with the Timberwolves in non-guaranteed, there is hope that he could make the team’s roster for, at least, the pre-season. Beyond Jimmy Butler and Andrew Wiggins, who start at the two and three spots, respectively, the competition on the wing is relatively weak for the Australian.

At 6’7 with impressive athleticism and an improving jump-shot, Adel may be able to earn one of the two remaining spots on the Timberwolves’ roster. Giving one of those spots to someone unproven isn’t common, so it’s not ideal for Adel that both two-way spots are already taken, but it’s not out of the question that he can impress enough to make Scott Layden and co. think about it.

NBA training camps begin at the end of September.
