Broncos star Jack Bird sighted at Sharks v Knights game

SPECULATION about Jack Bird returning to Cronulla went into overdrive on Sunday when the Brisbane star was spotted watching his former teammates play Newcastle.

There has been talk for much of the season that Bird has struggled to adjust to life at the Broncos and that he was angling for a Sharks return with whom he won the 2016 NRL premiership.

While his sighting at Southern Cross Group Stadium did little to quell the rumours, The Daily Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield revealed Bird at the ground to support the retiring Luke Lewis.

“Jack Bird was particularly close to Luke Lewis,” Rothfield told Controversy Corner on Monday.

“It was Luke Lewis’ farewell game at Shark Park and he came down to watch him.

“He was a guest of (Sharks) director Craig Airey in his corporate suite.

“I’m still hearing that he will be coming home next year, and if there’s anyway Cronulla can find space in the cap he will wear a Sharks jersey.”

Meanwhile, Sharks co-captain Paul Gallen has questioned Bird’s motives for leaving the Sharks for the Broncos this season on a four-year deal worth a reported $4 million.

“I’ve known the kid since he was 15-16 years old. I had a lot of talks with him before he left,” Gallen told Channel 9’s 100% Footy.

“The money wasn’t that much different. The whole chatter at the time was that he wanted to play five-eighth, that was the biggest issue.”

“He wanted to have his hands on the ball, that’s all he kept saying.

“If you go and play lock or you go and play five-eighth, you’ve got to make 20-30 tackles a game as well. He seemed to have forgotten about that part.

“When he went to Brisbane, he never got put in the five-eighth position and it never turned out well for him. He doesn’t seem to be that happy.”

Bird featured in just eight games in his debut season at the Broncos, with injury — particularly a sternum issue — plaguing his year.

But with the Sharks losing the likes of Ricky Leutele, Edrick Lee and Jesse Ramien at the end of the season, Gallen said he’d welcome Bird back with open arms.

“At the end of the day, he’s on about $850,000 a season and the Sharks simply do not have that in the cap next year,” Gallen said.

“I’d love to have ‘Birdy’ back. You look at our roster next year and we lose some of our outside backs.”
