Woman applying for job in Bristol coffee shop told ‘sorry, only English people’

Recommended Posts

A WOMAN who applied for a café job was allegedly rejected because she is not English.

Beatrice, who is originally from Italy, had applied for a barista role at Bristol’s Caffe Oro when she was told by email: “No sorry just English person.”

The 24-year-old was left furious by the café owner’s response, as she is fluent in English, reported BristolLive.

She wrote back to the café: “Do you know you cannot answer 'no sorry just English person' to somebody who is applying for a job?

"This is DISCRIMINATION. My English is perfect and I accept if you don't want to have me in your team because of the experience, but I do not tolerate an answer like that.”

In their response the owner told Beatrice that they were looking for someone with “good levels in English” not necessarily English people.

They added that they also needed an experienced barista.

The job-seeker hit back at the claim, asking: “You just told me 'I am looking for somebody with good English'.

How do you know how is my level of English if you did not even speak with me?”

She added that English mistakes in the messages from the cafe-owner - based on Bristol's St. Thomas' Lane - meant that her rejection was hypocritical.

Beatrice – who now has a job for a building management company in Bristol – says the experience in March was discrimination, as the coffee shop had not rung or spoken with her to check her level of English.

She said: “Even if my level is not good enough then fair enough, but she didn't speak to me or call me or anything.”

The Sun Online approached Caffe Oro for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
