Cops MUST use more stop and search powers to tackle gang crime

COPS must dramatically increase the use of stop and search in a bid to tackle gang violence and MOVE people away from dangerous gangs, an ex-Tory leader has warned.

Iain Duncan Smith made the demand as his think-tank issued a blueprint to combat violence.

The Centre for Social Justice states a “toxic cycle of violence” is spreading around the country fuelled by drug dealers operating with “impunity”.

He told Radio 4 this morning we must "move families where necessary".

He added: "In my areas, where we did this, Waltham Forest, for a while, we did move families who were under threat.

"We’ve got to bear in mind it’s not just people in gangs, its people who are not members of gangs, who come under threat for not being a part of gangs."

He demanded the police crack down on the leaders of such tribes to "collapse them from the inside".

His words heap pressure on London Mayor Sadiq Khan days after the number killings in the capital this year reached 100.

The report will be seen as a criticism of Theresa May who as home secretary led moves to scale back police search powers, warning they were disproportionately used against ethnic minorities.

Duncan Smith, the chairman of Centre for Social Justice, said: "Stop and search tells gangs they cannot move their guns and drugs around, making their lives much more difficult.

“People claim, 'it’s not fair', but who are the communities affected by this the most?

“It’s the poorest communities in our country. It means shops close, people don’t go on the street, kids who want nothing to do with the gang feel threatened.”
