Why 2019 is make or break for Fremantle Dockers forward Cam McCarthy

If forward Cam McCarthy doesn’t come “physically prepared” for 2019, he could be on the AFL scrapheap by season’s end.

That’s the opinion of The West Australian’s chief football writer Mark Duffield, who was unimpressed with the former GWS Giant’s match against Collingwood on Saturday.

It ended a disappointing year for McCarthy, who was in and out of the Dockers side to due poor form.

McCarthy went goalless for a second straight week in Saturday’s narrow loss to the Magpies at Optus Stadium.

He booted just 19 goals from 17 appearances for Fremantle this season, and averaged just 10 possessions, four marks and less than two tackles per game.

His best performances on the scoreboard came against bottom-two sides Carlton (round 21) and Gold Coast (round three), where he kicked three goals apiece.

“Cam McCarthy showed that 2019 is going to be a very big year for him,” Duffield said during the Duff and Quarters AFL podcast.

“Unless we see a better version of Cameron, and I mean physically prepared and mentally able to stand up to the pressure, I’m not sure there will be a Cam McCarthy in the AFL in 2020.

“He was pretty disappointing on Saturday... when you think that (Hayden) Ballantyne pretty much kicked their score after quarter-time.

“I thought Brennan Cox gave them a target to aim at, same with Matt Taberner, but there wasn’t much else hitting the scoreboard other than Ballantyne after quarter-time.”

The 23-year-old South Fremantle product is yet to re-capture the form of his stunning debut season at Greater Western Sydney since arriving at Fremantle in the 2016 trade period.
