No finals nerves for former Demon as stars align for NEAFL clash

ASPLEY ruckman Jake Spencer takes a wealth of finals experience into Saturday’s NEAFL elimination clash with Brisbane despite a decade with embattled AFL club Melbourne.

Spencer was the back-up for Melbourne’s All-Australian ruckmen Mark Jamar and Max Gawn across 10 seasons (2008-17) before he joined the Hornets.

While Melbourne did not make the play-offs during his time on their list, Spencer racked up numerous finals appearances in their reserves, the Casey Demons, including the 2016 VFL decider against Footscray.

He said, unlike many of his former Melbourne teammates who will play their first AFL final on Friday week, he won’t be suffering too many nerves before the second elimination clash at home.

“We were always in a really strong team at Casey even when Melbourne was struggling and I played in about 10 finals and a grand final so I know what to expect,” Spencer said.

Spencer, who played 38 matches with the Demons, forms a formidable midfield combination with former North Melbourne captain Andrew Swallow who also joined Aspley this year.

The duo is one of Aspley’s greatest assets against the Lions who have more than a dozen players with senior experience.

Among the better known Lions lining up in the knock-out match are rising ruckman Archie Smith, defensive hard-nut Claye Beams and 100-plus game AFL midfielder Ryan Bastinac.

Bastinac was a former teammate of Swallow’s at the Kangaroos before crossing to the Lions at the end of the 2015 AFL season.

Spencer said he heard rumours Swallow was joining the Hornets and couldn’t have been happier when it was confirmed he would be palming the ball to the Roos’ three-time club champion.

“One pleasing aspects of being at Aspley is I am much more of a contributor than I probably was at Melbourne and that adds to the enjoyment,” he said.

“It’s been a lot of fun having Swallow in there and every decision you make is being watched and magnified.”

He said the NEAFL was comparable to the VFL and the benefit of no longer being on an AFL list was that his, or the team’s performance, did not dictate his emotions for the following week.

“It’s very consuming when you are in that (AFL) bubble and your mood is all dependent on how well you went on the weekend,” he said.

“Now you get to Saturday you look forward to enjoying it and if you don’t play well it doesn’t define your week, but you can’t take short cuts … you’re still playing against AFL players or players with AFL experience.”

Saturday’s clash will be the first final at Aspley’s Graham Road home ground since they claimed the premiership in 2014.

The Lions and Hornets have met just once this season with Aspley winning the Round 9 fixture at Maroochydore by 19 points.

More than $500,000 has been spent upgrading the surface and facilities in the past 12 months, said Aspley Hornets Australian Football and Sporting Club general manager Craig Allan.

He said it was free entry and he was expecting up to 1000 spectators.

The winner will meet minor premier Southport in one preliminary final, while the victor of the elimination clash between Sydney University and Canberra at Blacktown meets the Sydney Swans in the other preliminary final.
