Bonnyrigg’s Ben Tosi: Fox Sports employee to take on A-League stars after work

Ben Tosi works in Fox Sports’ Digital Video Unit and after his shift on Wednesday morning, he’ll be one of a number of part-time footballers living out their dreams in the FFA Cup as he lines up for NPL side Bonnyrigg White Eagles against Western Sydney Wanderers. Here’s how he’s preparing for the match of a lifetime.

WEDNESDAY morning will be like most others for me. I’ll get up at 4.30am, drive to work, knock out a solid shift in the Fox Sports office, then head home.

But on Wednesday night things will be a little different. I’ll compete against a striker who has played alongside Lionel Messi, a midfielder who has played in the UEFA Champions League and a defender who was developed by Atletico Madrid’s youth system.

That’s pretty crazy, right?

For me, it’ll be the first time I’ve played against a professional first team, my first time playing against an A-League side and the first time I share a football pitch with full-time footballers, some of which who’ve had special careers in the sport.

For example, the guys I mentioned above - Oriol Riera, Alexander Baumjohann and Raul Llorente - have all played in Europe both with and against some of the biggest clubs in the world: Bayern Munich, Schalke, Barcelona and now, Bonnyrigg.

But I wouldn’t say I’m nervous, more so excited.

That’s the general vibe that’s been spreading over the squad in the build up to this FFA Cup clash, anyway. It’s been a tough season at Bonnyrigg. We feel as though we probably weren’t as consistent as we could’ve been over the course of the season and thanks to a relegation and promotion system that combines youth and first grade results, the club has been relegated to NPL2 for next season. Yeah, it’s definitely been a tough season.

But, nevertheless, it feels as though our Cup run and this game against a professional side is the perfect chance to end it on a high note. In fact, we’ve always performed better as the underdogs.

We have a great mix of experienced heads like Sammy Gallaway and David Vrankovic, who have played in games at this level before and don’t seem too fussed by any of it, and young guys who are keen to get a shot at those big name players.

So while everyone at the club is excited by the chance to test ourselves against a big A-League club, the boys and coaching staff have kept really calm.

In terms of preparation, there have been a couple of small changes like a video analysis session and slight tweaks to our training schedule, mostly to fit around all of our working commitments.

With our regular season having finished a couple of weeks ago, the sessions have been all about staying sharp and keeping fitness levels up for the entire squad. But for the most part it’s been much of the same work that has seen us through to the round of 16.

What isn’t normal, is having a journalist show up mid-week to watch one of the sessions.

So naturally there was a bit of banter flying about when none other than Simon Hill turned up to interview a couple of the boys. Jokes about who would get the pre-match feature and how excited he must have been to be spending a cold Friday night over at Bonnyrigg Sports Ground.

But on Wednesday, all that will stop. We know we need to play with an extreme intensity if we’re going to get be able to disrupt what the Wanderers do well but our coaches have been preparing us to do exactly that.

The message from them is to play without fear. Not to be overawed by the situation or the opponent and to let the Wanderers carry the favourites tag into the match, let the pressure be entirely on them.

Is there a chance of an upset? We think ‘why not’. The training ground was buzzing last week after APIA knocked out Melbourne Victory and if they can do it, knock out the current A-League champions, then why can’t we?

That’s the mentality I’m trying to adopt going into the game, personally. In many ways, it’s a free hit for all of us. The chance to match up against likely some of the best players we’ll ever share a football field with and hopefully create some special memories.

Sure, there might be a few more television cameras on Wednesday night than there is on a Saturday and yes, there will definitely be more spectators than what I’m used to, but for me and the rest of the squad once the whistle blows, it’ll be business as usual.
