The Flash Movie Star Hopes Filming Starts Next Year

Kiersey Clemons, who will play Iris West in The Flash movie standalone, is hoping that filming will start next year. As of now, Warner Bros. and DC Films are remaining mum about future projects except for the four films (Aquaman, Shazam!, Joker, and Wonder Woman 1984) that already have confirmed release dates. And considering their lineup, there's really no hurry to announce a long-term slate. But there are several known projects in development, including Ezra Miller's first standalone film as the Scarlet Speedster.

The Flash has been in development for quite a while now and was originally scheduled to hit theaters back in March based on Warner Bros.' slate as announced in 2014. It has gone through several directorial changes with both Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa attached to direct at one point. Earlier this year, the project found brand new helmers in Game Night filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. Previous reports claim that the movie may actually start production in early 2019. Although there was no official word about this from Warner Bros. Now, one of its stars is hoping, much like a lot of fans, that filming finally begins next year.

Speaking with Variety during the outlet's annual Power of Young Hollywood event, Clemons was asked about any update regarding The Flash. And while the star admitted to not knowing much about the film as of now, she shared she and Miller constantly communicate. She also said she's hoping production kicks off for the movie sometime next year, while revealing that they're on some sort of hold:

"No idea, we don't know yet. I mean, we have a little bit of an idea kind of who our director is, but I can't say that. But I talk with Ezra [Miller] frequently and we'll see. We can't say anything until you guys know. What I will say is that they get to approve every job that I do and, so far, I'm not doing Flash for the rest of the year, we know that. I'm doing other things. But let's hope for 2019."
 

Clemons was originally going to debut as Iris in last year's Justice League and had even filmed a scene with Miller as proven by a leaked deleted sequence. It's unclear why the segment was cut considering that introducing her in the film would've been the perfect way to springboard The Flash. Further, it would've also established more of a backstory for her and Barry's relationship, which is expected to be a focal point of the forthcoming standalone. Due to her absence in Justice League, rumors swirled that she may no longer be the actress bringing Iris to life on the big screen, but a few months after, things were eventually clarified with her confirming that she'll still be playing the role.

Not much is known about plot details for The Flash as of now. For a time, it was titled "Flashpoint" and was expected to mine narrative inspiration from the quintessential comic book run of the same name. However, the latest report about the project suggests that this will no longer be the case, meaning the film can literally be about anything.
