Legendary filmmaker Orson Welles’ final movie finally arrives in the first trailer and poster for The Other Side of the Wind. Shot between 1970 and 1976 and left uncompleted at the time of Welles’ death in 1985, The Other Side of the Wind became a matter of legal contention between multiple parties before rights were at last secured in 2014, an agreement that allowed Welles’ footage to finally be assembled into a completed movie.

In 2017, Netflix stepped in to sign a deal to release the film as well as provide financing for its completion. Most of the work completing the film was done by Peter Bogdanovich, a long-time friend of Welles and one of the movie’s stars, as well as the movie's original line producer Frank Marshall. Legendary composer Michel Legrand also contributed a new score. The film is now set to make its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in August ahead of a November release on Netflix.

As The Other Side of the Wind is set to finally be shown to audiences, Netflix has released a trailer and a poster teasing the long-awaited final film of Orson Welles. Known for his classics Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons and Touch of Evil, Welles later in life delved into experimentation that blurred the boundaries between documentary and fiction, a fact that is greatly in evidence in the mind-bending Other Side of the Wind trailer (see above). The Other Side of the Wind stars John Huston as Jake Hannaford, an aging film director who returns to Hollywood to try to make one last cinematic masterpiece. The film largely unfolds over the course of a party where footage from Hannaford’s radical film is shown to potential investors, while Hannaford himself descends into alcoholic madness. Shot in an experimental semi-documentary style, the movie was Welles’ attempt at satirizing the New Hollywood of the 1970s, a time when films became more avant-garde as well as more steeped in explicit sex and violence.

Among other things, the trailer gives a glimpse of what figures to be a wild performance by Huston as Hannaford, a character modeled after legendarily self-destructive author Ernest Hemingway. Huston was of course a great director himself, and also memorably acted in many films, including the classic Chinatown. With his larger-than-life personality and theatrical flair, Huston may become a star all over again when Welles’ film makes its debut on Netflix. Then again, even after the attempt to complete the movie and make it worthy of release, Welles’ vision could prove to be far too radical and strange for today’s audiences.

The new trailer for The Other Side of the Wind definitely promises a unique experience that will likely blow a lot of minds, and likely leave a lot of other Netflix viewers utterly puzzled. It will be interesting to see how the long-lost movie is received by critics at the Venice Film Festival and on November 2nd, 2018 when it releases on Netflix and in select theaters.
