Samsung looking to sell foldable displays to Xiaomi and Oppo?

You know the old saying, "Give a man a fish and he eats for one day. Teach a man to fish and eats for a lifetime." It seems that Samsung has its own take on this. "Sell a phone with our foldable display and make some money. Sell our foldable panels to multiple Chinese smartphone manufacturers, and collect a mint for life." Samsung's foldable Galaxy F, or whatever the name turns out to be, will undoubtedly feature Sammy's own folding AMOLED displays. But we could see these panels on phones from other manufacturers not too long afterwards.

Usually, Samsung likes to exploit its own innovations before offering them to competitors. But in this case, it looks like the manufacturer feels that it would be better off expanding the market and creating global demand for foldable phones. A report published today in South Korea says that Samsung has already spoken with Chinese phone producers Oppo and Xiaomi about selling folding displays to the pair. This move could allow Oppo and Xiaomi to launch their own foldable handsets not too long after the Galaxy F is released.

Samsung must have done the math. Most likely, it figured out that the money it brings in from sales of these panels to other manufacturers more than makes up for any Galaxy F sales it loses to competitors. In addition, Samsung apparently believes that it will benefit financially by riding the coattails of a new and expanding form factor. We won't know if this is actually what the company has in mind until shortly after it releases the Galaxy F early next year.
