IF you thought Daryl Braithwaite performing at the annual Falls Festival music festival this year was off the hook, hold the line.

Toto have been booked to play the New Year’s celebration.

The superstars who have stamped Africa and Rosanna into the music fan psyche will perform their classics in Lorne, Marion Bay, Byron Bay and Fremantle over the end of year holidays.

Other artists revealed in the much-anticipated first announcement today include local chart heroes Hilltop Hoods, Amy Shark, Vance Joy, Flight Facilities, Briggs and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.

Overseas acts including Anderson Paak and the Free Nationals, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Cashmere Cat, Chrvches, Interpol, Bishop Briggs, The Vaccines and First Aid Kit will also perform.

Falls have booked a strong contingent of rising local stars who have either made a big impression on the charts or the live scene to entertain the tens of thousands who attend the regional destination festival each year.

These include DMA’s, Golden Features, Ocean Alley, Mallrat, Cub Sport, Hockey Dad, Ruel, Jack River, Touch Sensitive, Tkay Maidza, Hatchie and Kota Banks.

With Australian festival line-ups under intense scrutiny for their diversity, 48 per cent of the artists in the first Falls announce are female acts or have women in their band.

Braithwaite’s announcement in this year’s Falls line-up sparked a torrent of social media reaction, with fans split on whether the Horses star should be performing at a youth music festival.

But the Sherbet frontman and solo superhero proved to be the biggest drawcard at each of the four festivals and even enjoyed tens of thousands of fans singing Happy Birthday when he celebrated his 69th birthday.

“It’s hard to explain why 18-to-25-year-olds like what we do,” he told the Hobart Mercury before going on stage last year.

“I know they like The Horses, but they also have to put up with 30-odd minutes of other stuff! I guess our style of music is completely different to what the majority of acts are doing at Falls.

“Maybe it’s because there’s no tapes or loops or anything like that — we’re an old-school ‘band’, and maybe they don’t see that too often.

“It’s amazing that it appeals. Until the day I die, I’ll be perplexed as to why.”

Toto is bound to provoke a similar reaction among the Falls fans but the love for the band among Australian musicians is huge with many acts using their instantly recognisable hits including Africa as their walk-on music at festivals in recent years.

The Falls Festival runs in Lorne, Victoria from December 28 to 31, Marion Bay in Tasmania from December 29 to December 31, Byron Bay in NSW from December 31 to January 2 and in Fremantle, WA on January 5 and 6.

Friends of Falls pre-sales will commence at 12pm (local time) today.

VISA Checkout pre-sales will commence at 9am on Monday with general sales from 9am next Thursday.
