***Minor spoilers***

Honestly, there's too much too say about this game that can't be mentioned in 10 minutes worth of typing, so I will go a couple of sections, and let you have a taste of what a great game Fallout 3 is!

Graphics

9/10

Graphics are something even the most inexperienced gamer would notice. The palette of pale, monotone colours fits the gloomy feeling targeted for this game. The post-apocalyptic setting gave little room for bright creations, so instead the artists focused all their time on the minutest details. Each little rock, each spiny tree, each crumbling building was carefully assembled to resemble the same rock, tree, or building you would see after a nuclear war in your city. If your computer can handle it, you'll notice the amazing views upon reaching the top of a hill, often with the spectacular Washington Monument looking down on you. On the down-side, if you do not have the computer to run it at its best, or choose to anyway, you will not experience the full scope of the game, and you may experience some lagging while moving your view quickly.

Sound

9.5/10

As I was strolling through the Capital Wasteland, killing the occasional gang of Raiders, various Radscorpions here and there, I was bedazzled. The scope of the audio in this game just hit me. As I traveled alone across the barren fields, in the middle of the night, looking anxiously around for any hidden monsters waiting to grope at my intestines, I heard wind rustling the branches (there are no more leaves) of the trees, and I was actually scared. The silence that is present throughout your travels is enough to send shivers down your spine, unlike games that play constant, randomly chosen music. The sounds played when in a fight scene were able to balance out the silence, and the brief periods of working radio was a small pleasure while walking around. The songs chosen were also well in their place, such titles as "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire" by the Inkspots hinted at the underlying humor of the designers of the game. Lastly, a note on the voice recordings. Being able to choose your gender, most recordings had to be done twice (or more) times to fit the plot, which shows how much energy was put into this game. And it is one thing to read the subtitles of a little boy saying curse words (a bit to crude for this selection), but to hear a small child actually say an explicit range of vocabulary in no more than 2 minutes really gives you that little spruce of joy that makes any game a bit more interesting. The one downside is that listening to the radio for more than 30 min

Gameplay and Controls

8/10

This aspect of the game has to be the one thing I am a bit disapointed about while playing, though it is not enough to affect the overall quality of this game. The controls were decent, getting done what was needed, although movement was a bit strange. The fact that the grenade was used as a weapon like a gun was also a bit of a bummer, since you couldn't quickly throw a grenade into a bunch into supermutants. The gameplay was the biggest issue. While walking through the city, confusing tunnels of metros and subway systems were often confusing, leading me in the wrong direction. Also, you couldn't get to certain places just by walking, as big piles of rubble blocked the way for further exploration. The constant opening of boxes and searching bodies for items and weapons was a fun part of the game. Hours were spent searching for some health packs, and getting free ammo so that you would make it through the next skirmish. Lastly, the character movement was just wrong. Just looking at a civilian walking around seemed unnatural, and if you looked at yourself in third person, your walking seemed recorded. It, in no way, reacted with the environment, and looked as if you were floating along the ground.

Plot and Side-Plots

9.5/10

There isn't much to be said about this aspect of the game without ruining it for people who haven't played yet, but I'll try and explain it as well as I can. The plot, from the beginning, is intriguing and interesting. At all moments, you want to find out what happens next, and every choice you make impacts the future of the game. The diversity of the results of the game also contribute to the re-playability factor, which I would say is near infinite. A great aspect of this game is that at nearly any time you can post-pone your main adventure for one of the many side-quests available. Not only that, but exploring the Wasteland is fun in itself, countless numbers of known buildings will spark your imagination to what could have happened. The many DLCs (Downloadable Content) available for the game such as Mothership Zeta and Operation Anchorage give even more areas to explore, and more time to play in this amazing world. The one downside that lowered the grade I gave was the fact that once you beat the game, you can't keep exploring and doing the quests scattered around the world, so unless you saved right before the final part, your screwed. Unfortunately I had to learn the hard way, though that is what gave me the ability to write such a thorough review on the game!

Conclusion

If not for the Puce Moose (can be found at Fallout 3 Nexus repository) which are like nothing you ever tried before, the game's a hack. 6+/10 at best. I much more recommend Fallout and Fallout 2 for the new enthusiasts. New Vegas was pretty solid since Bethesda had nothing to do with it, but it was still stained by the gamebryo Engine. Mods sincerely recommended!
