At last!

The 1975 have shared their new single ‘It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You)’, taken from their upcoming album ‘A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships’ – listen to it below.

The song premiered as the Hottest Record on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show tonight (October 18).

The arrival of the anthemic pop track brings to a close the cryptic form of release the band used to promote the single via social media, which included a typographic funnel made up of the title and a lyrics sheet.

The third single from The 1975’s forthcoming album ‘A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships’ hears the group explore dystopian themes, such as the idea that we are living in a simulated reality.

“Danny says we’re living in a simulation / But he works in a petrol station (selling petrol) / He says it all began with his operation / And I know you think you’re sly but you need some imagination.”

Elsewhere, frontman Matt Healy sings: “All I do is sit and think about you / If I knew what you’d do / Collapse my veins wearing beautiful shoes / It’s not living if it’s not with you.”

Earlier this month, Healy opened up about his songwriting techniques and why he doesn’t listen to rock bands.

Speaking to The New York Times about the band’s new record, he said: “The way that I write music is that I listen to a song I love and I copy it, and songs that I love are not songs by rock bands, unless they’re old classics.”

He also said that he doesn’t “listen to rock bands…

“It’s been around for too long. It’s been done in so many good ways.”
