  15. A GitHub user who goes by the name "Widevinedump" has published several repositories that allow people to download HD video from popular streaming platforms, including Disney+, Amazon, and Netflix. The code appears to be the real deal but the 'free' use is fairly limited and may not be very secure either. netflixetcWith more ways to stream online video than ever before, protecting video continues to be a key issue for copyright holders. This is often achieved through Digital Rights Management, which is often referred to by the initials DRM. In a nutshell, DRM is an anti-piracy tool that dictates when and where digital content can be accessed. Widevine DRM is one of the leading players in the field. The Google-owned technology is used by many of the largest streaming services including Amazon, Netflix and Disney+. As such, keeping it secure is vital. Widevine DRM Widevine DRM comes in different levels. The L1 variant is the most secure, followed by L2 and L3. While the latter still protects content from being easily downloaded, it’s certainly not impossible to bypass, as pirates have repeatedly shown. 4K leaks are not that unique anymore either. The tools to bypass the strictest protection are made available through private channels and for a few days, they’ve been floating around in public as well. A developer named “Widevinedump” posted a collection of download tools on GitHub. These include the ‘DISNEY-4K-SCRIPT’, ‘Netflix-4K-Script’, ‘WV-AMZN-4K-RIPPER’, ‘HBO-MAX-BLIM-TV-Paramount-4k-Downloader’, ‘APPLE-TV-4K-Downloader’ and several others. widevinedump TorrentFreak spoke to a source who confirmed that these scrips are indeed the real deal. That said, they appear to be relatively old pieces of code that may not be the most secure. Using these tools could get someone banned by a streaming platform, or perhaps worse. Pay to Play? There is another major issue that raises suspicion. Most of the download tools don’t come with the Content Decryption Module (CDM) that’s included to download 4K content. To gain access to that, people are required to buy it from the leaker, who writes that people can contact them via email. widevine That said, there is also a free L1 Content Decryption Module posted in the ‘LenovoTB-X505X-L1-KEY’ repository. A trusted source confirmed to TorrentFreak that this CDM is indeed working. However, as Widevinedump also notes, it may not be active for much longer. “Working L1 CDM FOR NETFLIX & ALL SITES |AMZN-DSNP-Blocked|. Note This CDM Will Burn in 2-3 Days So Use as much u can..,” Widevinedump writes. Punishment While these leaks are a major blow to the streaming platforms, which do all they can to keep their content secure, the developer has another agenda. In addition to selling CDMs, the code was apparently leaked to “punish” some people on Discord, who we assume shared it privately. “Hi! My name is WVDUMP. I am Leaking the CDM to burn it & punish few idiots that think themselves as dicord lords [sic],” the developer writes. Needless to say, using these tools can lead to all sorts of legal trouble and it is clearly in violation of the DMCA’s anti-circumvention provisions. As such, we doubt they will stay on GitHub for much longer. That said, when something leaks on the Internet it’s generally pretty hard to put the genie back in the bottle. Update: We contacted the person who posted this material. They said they weren’t aware of the serious legal risks and would remove the code in three days. The backstory, which we won’t publish here, seems rather odd so we’re not sure what to make of all this and remain very suspicious about their intentions. Update 2: The repositories were removed around the first of January. Video posted by Widevinedump Video Player
  16. Triller's legal campaign against sites that allegedly streamed the Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren boxing match last April has suffered another setback. Alleged pirate streaming site Online2LiveStream has been sued twice by the promotor but in common with the first dismissal, a court has thrown the second case out after Triller failed to comply with the court's orders. TrillerAfter eight months, Triller’s legal campaign against sites that allegedly streamed the Jake Paul vs Ben Askren boxing match on April 17 is still ongoing. Named in its initial $100m lawsuit and described as “cyber-criminals”, one of Triller’s early targets were the operators of Online2LiveStreams.us. The platform was accused of diverting a share of 2,000,000 streams away from Triller’s legal services. The case didn’t go well with all but one of the defendants (FilmDaily.co – a case that is still pending) later dismissed by a judge who found the lawsuit to be overbroad. A month later, Triller responded by filing individual lawsuits against some of the previously-dismissed defendants. Among them was alleged Online2LiveStreams.us operator Robiul Awal and ten doe defendants. Triller’s lawsuit alleged copyright infringement, vicarious copyright infringement, violations of the Federal Communications Act, conversion, and a violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. The suit also included a claim of false advertising after Online2LiveStream transformed itself into a scam site, offering events in exchange for credit card details but failing to deliver. Court Warns Case Could Be Dismissed On August 30, 2021, three months after the latest case was filed, a California district court ordered Triller to explain why the case should not be dismissed based on the failure of the plaintiff to properly serve the defendant. “[F]ailure to timely or adequately respond to this Order may result in the dismissal of the action without further warning,” the order read. Triller informed the court that it had experienced problems serving the defendant as they believe he resides in Bangladesh. As a result, Triller had contacted a third-party vendor to assist and was otherwise “making a good faith effort” to effect service. On September 17, the court issued a minute order directing Triller to file either a proof of service or a status report by December 17, 2021. That date came and went but Triller remained silent. Insufficent Due Diligence – Court Dismisses Case In an order dated December 21, 2021, United States District Judge Otis D. Wright, II explained that despite his instructions, Triller had failed to comply with the requirements of the court. “As of today’s date, and despite having been granted four months to do so, Plaintiff has not filed a Proof of Service or any other response to the Court’s September 17, 2021 Minute Order. Thus, although the case has been open for over six months, the Court remains without any indication that Plaintiff served Defendant or that Plaintiff has made timely, substantial efforts to serve Defendant,” the order reads. “Plaintiff was warned that failure to effect service and to respond to the Court’s orders would result in dismissal of the case, and Plaintiff failed to provide the Court with an update regarding service as ordered.” Noting that the due diligence standard and dismissal factors support dismissal of the case, the Judge did just that. “Resolution on the merits is not possible due to Plaintiff’s failure to serve Defendant, and the seven-month passage of time without service of process increases the risk of prejudice to Defendant,” Judge Otis Wright notes. “Under these circumstances, the Court finds that Plaintiff has failed to exercise sufficient due diligence, and dismissal of the action without prejudice is warranted.” Since the case was dismissed without prejudice, it can be refiled, albeit for a third time. But, given the difficulties serving the defendant the first time around, it seems reasonable to conclude that the job won’t have become any easier with the passing of time and is unlikely to come back from the dead.
  17. Most pirate sites try not to grab the attention of rightsholders and anti-piracy groups. Spanish torrent site DonTorrent is clearly not on that list because it openly taunts the Motion Picture Association. The site lists MPA's Chief of Global Content Protection Jan Van Voorn as the 'official' owner in its legal disclaimer. dontorrentWith millions of monthly visitors, DonTorrent is a force to be reckoned with. The site is particularly popular in Spain and offers links to a curated selection of torrents. DonTorrent regularly switches domain names to evade ISP blocking efforts, a common practice among pirate sites. It is currently operating from dontorrent.cat and also has a dedicated .onion address so it can be accessed anonymously through the Tor network. ACE and MPA Watch DonTorrent In addition to site blocking, there are other potential risks on the horizon. Anti-piracy coalition ACE is following the site closely. The group previously asked Cloudflare to share all details it holds on the operators of the site, presumably in advance of legal action. ACE tried to obtain this information through a subpoena submitted by MPA’s Chief of Global Content Protection Jan Van Voorn. This is a common practice nowadays, which – in some cases – helps ACE and its members to obtain useful intelligence. Whether Cloudflare shared anything useful on DonTorrent is unknown. However, the site is certainly aware of ACE and MPA’s interest since it’s openly taunting the anti-piracy collectives. According to the site’s disclaimer, DonTorrent is owned by MPA content protection boss Jan Van Voorn. Who Owns DonTorrent? “This website belongs to Jan van Voorn, address 15301 Ventura Boulevard, Building E Sherman Oaks, California 91403 United States,” the disclaimer begins. dontorrent This message isn’t a belated April fools prank, as it has already been in place for weeks. That said, it’s obviously meant as a joke of some kind, as the MPA and Van Voorn are on the other side of the piracy spectrum. The notice is a bold move nonetheless and we assume that ACE and the MPA will only become more determined to find out who’s really behind the scenes. And they may get some help from Spanish law enforcement. MPA’s Close Ties With Spain Two weeks ago, MPA Chairman Charles Rivkin met with Francisco Pardo, the Director General of the Spanish Police, who committed to protecting rightsholders from online piracy. “Director General Francisco Pardo Piqueras told me today that the film/TV/streaming industry needs to be protected from piracy because it ‘creates dreams, hope, and happiness, and that… is magic’,” Rivkin tweeted in response. For now, the Spanish torrent site appears to feel pretty safe. Before publishing, we tried to find out what motivated DonTorrent’s operators to put Van Voorn in change but we didn’t hear back.

  19. The Government of Indonesia continues to crack down on piracy. The country's list of blocked sites and services has grown to more than 3,500 domain names. According to the Coalition Against Piracy, these actions resulted in a 75% decrease in pirate site traffic, while the use of legal alternatives has tripled. indonsiaIndonesia has been very active on the anti-piracy front in recent years, with the government ordering Internet providers to block thousands of pirate sites. The government action began in mid-2009 and at the start of this month, the local blocklist had grown to include over 3,500 domain names These interventions are cheered on by the Coalition Against Piracy (CAP). The organization, which includes Hollywood players such as Disney, Fox, HBO Asia and NBCUniversal, plus sports leagues such as the Premier League and the NBA, sees Indonesia as one of the most successful anti-piracy pioneers in Asia. Legal Options Flourish as Pirate Traffic Drops CAP is keeping a close eye on the evolvement of online piracy in the Asian region. Its own data shows that traffic to pirate sites decreased by 75% in Indonesia since the blocking efforts started. At the same time, visits to legitimate streaming platforms have tripled. “Indonesia is leading the way when it comes to regulatory site blocking in the Asia Pacific region, if not the world, and the Indonesian government is to be congratulated for the strong stance they have taken in this area,” CAP’s General Manager Matthew Cheetham says. The positive findings are backed up by CAP’s recent YouGov study which found that more than half of all Indonesian consumers say that they cut back or stopped using pirate services due to the blocking efforts. The same survey also found that 76% of Indonesian consumers say they now pirate less and use legal services more often. At the same time, over a quarter of the respondents said they’ve subscribed to a legal service due to pirate site blockades. Challenges Remain According to CAP, pirate site blocking efforts are also driving traffic to legal sources in other countries in the Asia Pacific region. However, piracy remains a concern, particularly in Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines, where more than 60% of the public uses pirate sites. The anti-piracy group realizes that there is still a long way to go before piracy is no longer a concern. However, it believes that site blocking is here to stay as it helps people get on the right track. “It is now clearly evident that site blocking, particularly regulatory blocking, is effective,” Cheetham previously said, noting that blocking efforts also help to curb the spread of malware and other threats. “The benefits are multi-fold, not only are consumers being directed towards legitimate content, but in being blocked from accessing pirate sites, they are also protected from the serious risks that previous CAP studies have proven are inherent in accessing pirate sites.” In addition to site blocking, it’s also crucial that affordable legal options are widely available. Academic research previously found that, when Netflix failed to launch in Indonesia in 2016, piracy numbers significantly increased compared to neighboring countries.
