You can try MPV Player as per @LiBYan007's suggestion. You shouldn't have to change any settings in VLC for x265.

Still the best camera

VLC always seems like the gold standard of video players. Are you using the latest version / 64-bit version? Are you able to see if you're bottlenecked somewhere?

 

Are you on a networked drive? If so, can the network support the load?

 

I've never had an issue with VLC. Could you have turned on some of the more advanced VLC settings, some of them will force higher CPU usage.

UnRAID. Was very easy to set up, and offers a lot more than just NAS.
