Twitter decides to cut the Sci-Hub account, the “Pirate Bay of Science”

That Donald Trump is censored is still happening - although this indicates a certain autocratic power on the part of Twitter. But that we delete the account of Sci-Hub, that becomes more interesting. This platform, which Alexandra Elbakyan set up, offers millions of research documents. And of course, they are freely available to Internet users. Much to the chagrin of publishers.

Called Pirate Bay of Sciences - in reference to the well-known torrent link platform - Sci-Hub has its ups and downs. For editors of scientific papers, Alexandra Elbakyan has implemented a solution that threatens companies and their billions of dollars in revenues. As such, Sci-Hub has several times been threatened with closure, but always the crow - Huginn or Muninn, it is to be seen - has managed to escape the traps.

In India, Sci-Hub is even the subject of a lawsuit, reports Torrent freak , brought by Elsevier, Wiley and the American Chemical Society. All these groups are asking for a formal blockage - while on the territory, many academics see it as an essential windfall for their work. The Indian High Court assured that it was a procedure of public importance: the testimonies multiply since, but now, the new blow comes from the networks.

The blue bird whistle cut

Indeed, Alexandra Elbakyan announces that Twitter has suspended the official account, depriving the 185,000 subscribers of messages disseminated during the past nine years. A direct reaction to the action in India , believes the founder, an application of the network's policy on counterfeiting, retorts Twitter. Which adds, for all intents and purposes, that an appeal of the decision can be made.

It is true that in recent weeks, Indian scientists have multiplied messages of support: for them, Sci-Hub provides free access to items, which are too expensive to purchase. And since Sci-Hub's Twitter account had shared them all, or almost all, deleting the account (even temporarily) made them less visible.

CORONAVIRUS: hundreds of articles in open access

“  The only reason students at blatantly underfunded Indian institutions manage to do quality research is because of platforms like Sci-Hub and Libgen. If you block them, you block the search. Point to the line  , "exclaims Sushmita Pati, assistant professor of political science.

For now, it is still unclear whether Twitter, as with Trump, acted of its own free will, or under pressure from rights holders - contrary to Trump's permanent blockade. However, the company confirms that it was for violating the network's policy on counterfeiting that the account was suspended
