A newly released featurette for Black Widow on National Superhero Day builds excitement for Natasha's backstory. Although Scarlet Johansson made her first appearance in the MCU all the way back in 2010 (for Iron Man 2), fans still don't know a lot about Natasha's past. Black Widow will be the window into Natasha Romanoff's unexplored backstory that fans have been waiting on for years now. For the longest time, she and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) were the only two Avengers from the original bunch who didn't have their own solo movies. The suspense was then prolonged further due to the premiere date getting delayed, as has happened for countless other movies that were scheduled to release in 2020. Black Widow is now set to release both in theaters and on Disney+ on July 9, given there are no reasons for further delays.

The upcoming film will also introduce David Harbour (Stranger Things) and Florence Pugh (Midsommar) into the MCU, which should help to draw more viewers in, seeing as both actors are relative newcomers who have skyrocketed in popularity recently. Harbour and Pugh are also going to be taking on Russian accents for their roles, which will give them the chance to exhibit another talent. The story is promised to take place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame.

For National Superhero Day, Marvel Entertainment posted a featurette video dedicated to the elusive spy, Romanoff. It features Johansson as she walks viewers through all that Romanoff has done for the team in the MCU, from rallying all the other heroes in the first place, to facing off with the various foes they've met along the way. After catching glimpses of the character in past movies, the video starts to tease all the scenes in the upcoming movie. Check out the video below:

Interestingly, the video fails to mention that Romanoff died in the last Avengers film, a.k.a., the last time Johansson was seen in the MCU. It's possible they don't want to bring up a somber note in this tribute to the character. Or, maybe Marvel doesn't want to bring attention to the contentious and arguably rushed death scene that Romanoff went out on in Endgame. Even though it's coming in late, it'll be good to finally see Romanoff in a solo project instead of having her storyline rushed through as a subplot.

Marvel has already released all of the trailers they have for Black Widow, but hopefully fans will see more featurettes like this one in the coming month before the premiere. There have also been a number of theories bouncing around regarding the significance of Pugh's new character and whether or not other Avengers or in-universe players will make an appearance. Until Black Widow premieres in July, fans will just have to just keep speculating on how this superhero story will play out for Romanoff.
