The director of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It says that the film won't introduce the next big ghoul of the horror franchise. The Conjuring films began as an adaptation of the case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren, tackling instances of demonic possession. The original 2013 and 2016 films were praised for their haunted house stories and both The Conjuring and its sequel became two of the most successful horror films of the 21st century. This prompted the franchise to go in new directions, branching off from the story of the Warren's to tell other ghostly tales.

The interconnected Conjuring universe includes movies centered around various paranormal entities that the Warren's have encounter during their casework. Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, and Annabelle Comes Home are all about the titular doll that was featured in the first film. The Nun features the character Valak from The Conjuring 2, while The Curse of La Llorona nods to the universe by featuring a character from the Annabelle films. The most recent spinoff, Annabelle Comes Home, was released in 2019 and with a new Conjuring film on the way, some hoped that The Devil Made Me Do It would introduce the next ghoulish spinoff.

In an interview with Screen Rant, director Michael Chaves says that this is not the case, though. The director did say that even he thought this would be possible, asking producer James Wan what kind of demon The Devil Made Me Do It would introduce into the universe. Chaves says that Wan told him they would be doing something unique this time around, though, crafting a different adversary for the Warren's, the likes of which has never been seen in The Conjuring universe.

The Conjuring movies have introduced other ghouls that The Conjuring universe has been built around. Are we going to see the next Annabelle in this movie?

Michael Chaves: It's funny, that was the first thing [I asked]. When James talked to me about it, I was like, "What's the new iconic monster? What are we going to do? Is it going to be a demon priest? Or is it going to be an evil mannequin?" I was just joking with him, but I was honestly so excited. James is not only the master of horror, but a master monster maker. And from the very beginning, he was like, "That's what everyone's expecting. We're gonna do something different." And I think that this is a movie that is intentionally a different Warren adventure and a different experience. We definitely have an adversary that we've never faced before; that you've never seen before. And I think that in itself is going to be kind of unique and surprising. I'm excited for you guys to see it.

The decision not to introduce another movie-hopping ghost is probably for the best. When The Devil Made Me Do It hits theaters and HBO Max this summer, it will have been five years since the Warren's have taken center stage in a film of their own. While the first two Conjuring films found  balance in introducing spinoff films and focusing on the Warren's, The Conjuring 3 will have a lot on its plate. The story of Arne Johnson is a complicated one - after murdering his landlord, he pleads not guilty, using demonic possession as a reason behind the murder.

On top of that, though, is the spirit behind the possession and its involvement in both Johnson's life and a young child's, played by Julian Hilliard. Taking time to focus on those stories as well as the Warren's own demons is more than enough for one film and there's still plenty of opportunities to come for the paranormal investigators. The Conjuring universe will also introduce another spinoff with The Crooked Man, so there will be no shortage of ghoulish entries. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is clearly set to begin a new chapter in the franchise and focusing on the Warren's is the right way to do it.
