Venom 2 Is Set About A Year & A Half After First Movie

About a year and a half has passed between Venom: Let There Be Carnage and the first movie, says director Andy Serkis. In 2018, Sony once again tried its hand at creating its own Marvel universe comprised of Spider-Man characters with Venom. The Ruben Fleischer-directed film starred Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, a journalist who becomes an unwitting host to a symbiote named Venom. Though receiving mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, Venom was a bona fide hit, winning over audiences with the odd couple pairing of Eddie and Venom, as well as Hardy's go for broke performance.

The sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, is eagerly anticipated by those who loved the first installment, but it has suffered some setbacks over the past year. Once scheduled for release in October 2020, Venom: Let There Be Carnage became one of the many movies delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. It has shuffled premiere dates a few times and currently remains scheduled for September 24. In perhaps a sign of Sony fully committing to that date, the first trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage finally debuted on Monday morning.

Following the trailer's premiere, Serkis spoke with IGN and broke down the different plot developments glimpsed in the clip. The opening moments of the Venom 2 trailer confirm Eddie and his symbiotic pal have been together for a while, and Serkis revealed the amount of time that has passed since the first movie. "They've been together for... a year and a half, say, since the last story," Serkis said. At the start of Let There Be Carnage, they're still trying to figure out how to cohabitate.

The longer gap between the two Venom movies sounds smart. While the first film tracked their meeting and early days of being together, Venom: Let There Be Carnage can move ahead to a time when they've already spent a decent period inhabiting the same space. This doesn't mean they've perfected the art of being paired up, as the breakfast scene from trailer confirmed, but it can deepen their relationship without actively showing every single beat of their lives. Venom: Let There Be Carnage will find Eddie and the symbiote in an interesting place, and their off-screen experiences from the past year or so can color their actions in a meaningful way.

Eddie and Venom will still be experiencing some growing pains, but they will need to get over those quickly if they want to survive Let There Be Carnage. There are two major villains on the way: Shriek (Naomi Harris) and the titular Carnage (Woody Harrelson), who was teased in Venom's end-credits scene. It remains to be seen if Venom and Eddie have battled any bad guys since Riz Ahmed's Riot from the first film, but they might suffer a bit of an adjustment period. Either way, they've had some time to get used to each other by the start of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and it'll be interesting to see how they've grown.
