This is a simple and quick guide to restarting rTorrent using the program putty

NEED

rTorrent has crashed and now is unresponsive or unable to load webui.

You will usually see an error message in the log that might say something similar to:

Unable to connect to rTorrent. Check if it is really running. Check $scgi_port and $scgi_host settings in config.php and scgi_port in rTorrent configuration file.

Before proceeding, you should be aware if you have SSH access to your seedbox.

You MUST HAVE SSH ACCESSABILITY for this to work!

If you don’t already have putty you can download here

Open putty and put in your Host Name or IP address (seedbox server name)

Leave everything else as default

Click open

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Next it will prompt you for your username and password, go ahead and input them in the command line and press enter.

Now you should have a screen that will have your username@server:~$ prompt.

We will stop the processes for rtorrent

Type

killall rtorrent

then press enter

This command will attempt to kill all the processes related to rtorrent (some processes will not be killed due to a cascade effect that happens by killing the first process, may display Operation not permitted)

sp4putty.jpg

Time to start rtorrent

Type

screen –s rtorrent

then press enter

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

sp5putty.jpg

You will see the rTorrent information screen (this confirms the program has restarted)

Now you want to detach rtorrent

On the keyboard hold Ctrl+A+D until you see the next screen

sp6putty.jpg

And now you should get a screen like this saying "detached from 1234.pts-24.server"

Type

exit

and press enter or click the red X in the upper righthand corner to exit the session.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Now rTorrent has been restarted and you should be able to access it through the webui.

Hope this helps!
