New details for The Conjuring 3 reveal what could possibly be a story about a murder trial. The first two Conjuring films were based on real events from the case files of the paranormal investigators named Ed and Lorraine Warren. The couple investigated many hauntings over their years and wrote books on their findings, which have been the basis for the films in The Conjuring universe.

The first movie was directed by James Wan and was about a family who moves into a farmhouse in Rhode Island, which is haunted by a witch that possesses mothers into killing their children. With the massive success of the first film, a spinoff released, titled Annabelle, which gave the demonic doll a backstory. The spinoff earned less than favorable reviews partly because of the absence of the Warrens. Then, in 2016, Wan returned to the franchise to direct The Conjuring 2, which saw Ed and Lorraine investigate the infamous Enfield poltergeist. Since then there have been two more spinoff films - including a prequel to the first Annabelle, titled Annabelle: Creation and, most recently, The Nun, which was the earliest film set in The Conjuring timeline. Now, the story seems to be shifting back to Ed and Lorraine who may end up investigating a murder trial.

According to Bloody Disgusting, inside sources are claiming that Conjuring 3 will focus on a man in the middle of a murder trial who pleas that he was possessed by a demon. While the two films were based on real-life events, it is currently unknown if this third film will be pulled from the case files of the Warrens or will simply be pure fiction. Even though very little has been revealed about Conjuring 3, stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will be returning to the roles of Ed and Lorraine.

While Wilson and Farmiga are returning to their roles, Wan will not be taking a third swing at directing a Conjuring film. Instead, Michael Chaves will be directing The Conjuring 3. As for the other ends of The Conjuring universe, Annabelle 3 will be the next film in the series, which will also bring back Ed and Lorraine for supporting roles. Another spinoff, called The Crooked Man, based on the character from The Conjuring 2, is also still in development.

Even though these story details about a murder trial haven't been confirmed, it seems like a plausible set up for the third film. After all, producer Peter Safran confirmed in 2017 that The Conjuring 3 wouldn't be another haunted house movie so that the series wouldn't become repetitive. This story could also prove to be an interesting look at Warrens' critics since not everyone believes in the supernatural, especially when it's involved in the courtroom. With the Conjuring films proving to be extremely profitable, regardless of the subject matter, more of the horror flicks will likely be rushed to cinemas for years to come even after The Conjuring 3.
