  12. More DDoS news and stuff! Hey there! If you can read this, your ISP has updated it's DNS information and you are reaching jpopsuki again, yay! So yeah, we are semi back I guess, took long enough but... it's complicated. The new "setup" is kinda shitty and pretty slow (like, srsly slow - expect to see RED AGAIN) but it's what we got for now and it certainly is no "final solution". But yes, this current setup should give us a bit of protection from DDoS attacks - at least that is the plan, we'll see how that works out. Either way, the tracker is useable again so make the best of it. Beside that, the jpopsuki.tv site will stay down indefinitely but I hope to have it moved somewhere else in early June - bandwidth requirements are just too much to handle with this wonky setup right here. But be assured, it's not gone forever! Plans for the future? I intend on buying a fully dedicated server (in parts), set that thing up and send it for colocated hosting to a provider that is specialised in DDoS secured hosting. Renting a server is not an option since most providers demand an arm and a leg for a decent server with DDoS protection. Also the often mentioned cloudflare would be $200 a month for their plan with DDoS protection and I'm not even entirely sure if they would cover stuff running on different ports like the tracker... So yes, buying a decent server and sending it so a hoster is the plan for the future. When we'll have the money for that is not clear and depends partially on donations since I'm running on empty already after recent traffic bills and all this trouble here in the past days/week. So if you can chip in a few € and donate, that certainly would be appreciated and speed things up. Edit regarding donations: If you are having trouble donating using the PayPal button, getting an error after it has been sent or anything like that - do NOT donate a second time since the first donation most likely already went through fine. Contact me (MellowB) and see if everything did go fine, only then donate again. Also please do not request a refund from PayPal if you donated twice by accident - just write me again and I'll refund you the money asap. Thank you! Known Issues: The displayed amount of seeded torrents in your profile, on the front page and in maybe other places will be off/way too low. This has to do with the way things are setup right now and there is not much I can do about that, at least I don't know what. This is a temporary thing and will be fixed when we move to a different server or ditch the current setup. Either way, JFYI. (yes, it will harm your bonus points accumulation most likely, sorry about that. ) If you got any more questions or what not, please, don't hesitate!

  14. UK’s Plan To Introduce A Graduated-Response System Could Prove Ineffective After successfully managing to take The Pirate Bay and Newzbin2 offline, UK’s government is looking forward to introduce (somewhere next year) a graduated-response system. How effective will the system be against online piracy, however, is disputed by Ofcom’s quarterly report. Ofcom’s quarterly report, covering November 2012 – January 2013, reveals that notification letters (sent by ISPs to customers who are suspected of downloading and or uploading copyrighted content) which threaten to suspend the user’s internet access would have the desired effect on just 16% of those who are allegedly infringing copyright online. The previous report (covering August 2012 – October 2012) showed that 18% (aged 12+) got their hands on unlicensed content at least once. Now, here’s something for the entertainment industries to consider before they go and block websites at DNS level. Internet consumers agreed upon three vital changes that would make them stop infringing copyright: 28% (down from 30% in the previous report) claim that affordable legal services would make them stop from downloading illegal content, 24% (down from 25% in the previous report) asked for a system that clearly determines which content is legal and which is not, and 22% (down from 24% in the previous report) agreed that availability is an important issue that drives people to pirate. Furthermore, 41% of all internet users (age 12+) said that they are “not particularly confident” or “not at all confident” about what’s legal and what’s not legal (online, of course). The survey explains that for music, films and TV programmes, consumers who chose both legal and illegal content “claimed to spend more on that particular content type over the three-month period than those who consumed either 100% legally or 100% illegally“. Why? Well, 48% (down from 50%) said because it’s free, 39% (down from 46%) chose convenience, and 36% (down from 43%) said because it’s fast. As for the source of pirated content, peer-to-peer takes the cake, with 35% preferring the decentralized method. Cyberlockers account for just 12%. Will these results bring further changes to the Obligations Code? We’re about to see…

  17. Oceanic ISP Issues Dear FunFile Users, Please be advised that we are aware of some issues with the ISP/frontend serving Oceanians/Australians/Kiwis/Other upside-downers/some Asians and that oddball in Antarctica. Rest assured, we are working diligently on a fix within the capacity of the yoghurt dipped treats being thrown to us. For those with issues that stemmed from reverting to an earlier version of uTorrent due to 3.X's issues, please try stopping all torrents, closing uTorrent and restarting it all back again. Ensure you have uTorrent correctly configured and wouldn't hurt to ensure SSL is installed and enabled. Also, DISABLE useless applications like Peerblock/Peerguardian etc. If you still experience issues and would like to help us rectify the issue as a guinea-pig & have no objection to being poked and prodded extensively, feel free to join us in the #Help channel on IRC. Any anti-socials are most welcome to leave a Staffbox message instead. We will advise further as soon as the issues are rectified. For the lucky rest of you unaffected, keep on enjoying.

    FSC NEWS

Summer News Hmm, it's too empty on this page so here comes some new stuff Hello Hello dear members, lurkers, beggers, traders, leechers and fellow staffers (if you still shouldn't feel addressed by now please send a staff pm) On our continuous journey to perfection we once more did spare no effort and applied not only but also the following changes and upgrades: Details Page: As most of you might have noticed meanwhile the torrent details pages got a facelift. Mostly adopting the same structure we have on the userdetails pages for a while now and some optimizations under the hood. This should give a better and more uniform picture of the important info and a better fit in general. Upload Page: The upload page also got slight changes but the important modifications are under the surface. The following two things have been changed not long ago: 1. NFOs are not mandatory anymore. You do however need to either give a description or an nfo. If either of them has been provided you're good to go. This should first and foremost please anyone who upload non-scene material. 2. We added some restrictions to the piece size of the torrent. Most of you will never encounter them. It's just to eliminate some crazy combinations like 256KB pieces for an 8GB game or something That aside given the latest forum posts it never hurts to refresh a few basic SECURITY hints: Scripts: FSC is working perfectly fine without any client-side scripts. Meaning that it's recommended to turn off whatever your browser offers. Addons like noscript are highly recommended as well. The less extras you have activated the safer you are. Passwords: Still the classic and cause of the vast majority of problems. Just follow a few simple rules and you're good: - unique passwords: never use the same password for more than one account. - strong passwords: ideally use totally random passwords with upper and lower case letters and numbers. The other major factor is the length. The longer the better. Keeping those two simple things in mind will seriously increase the security of all your accounts. So much for now, enjoy your stay here and have a good time FSC
  21. A number of ISPs, including AT&T, Verizon, Time Warner and Cox, are currently appealing a district court decision which ordered the companies to reveal the identities of more than a thousand of their subscribers alleged of pirating video content on BitTorrent. The broadband providers argue that their customers may not be those who downloaded the copyrighted content. Back in 2012, a district court judge, ex RIAA lobbyist, granted the porn company AF Holdings the right to get personal information of over 1000 subscribers alleged of downloading their copyrighted works through BitTorrent. This was a big victory for both the porn studio and its law firm Prenda, because other judges rejected to join such an impressive number of defendants in a single case. But this judge even accused the broadband providers of failing to do enough to stop Internet piracy. Now the ISPs hope to reverse the recent ruling and stop law firms from “commercial invoicing”. The companies claimed that many judges have previously rejected such cases because the copyright trolls were trying to sue many people at minimal cost, while many of the targeted subscribers aren’t people who actually downloaded the infringing content. Everyone knows that unsecured and shared connections in subscribers’ homes make them the false identities of the real infringers. Although the porn studio is well aware of this, it is simply not interested in finding the true pirates, but rather in settlements of a few thousands dollars with each defendant. The matter is that the evidence in these cases is never properly tested, and many of the alleged subscribers may be innocent. But those defendants often see settling as the best option in such embarrassing situation, because hiring a lawyer costs the same as the settlement fee. The broadband providers also mention the controversial nature of the law company Prenda, which was recently punished in court for its “mob-like” tactics. For example, its principals relied on fictitious persons as “clients” and submitted fake documents of their cases. So, the dubious status of the law firm alone may be the reason to overturn the previous ruling. Subscribers appreciate that their ISPs are trying to protect them and are taking a stand in this case. Obviously, it’s in their own interests too, but it also helps the hundreds of people now and perhaps thousands more in the future. It is unlikely that copyright troll cases are going away at all, but the victory in this case will at least allow the service providers minimize the damage they cause.
  22. We would like to inform you about that tomorrow the 29.05. have to expect a downtime due to maintenance at our hoster. This is expected to start at 11:30 and last until about 14:30 clock.
  23. Warner Bros. & NBC Universal Ask Google To Remove Mega From Its Search Results The two studios claim that Kim’s Mega is already hosting their copyrighted content, and needs to be removed from Google’s search results as soon as possible. In response to their request, Kim said that: “This is in line with the unreasonable content industry behavior we have experienced for years.” After receiving no less than 20 million take-down requests last year, Google remains under huge pressure from the entertainment industries, as it’s continuously being urged to remove infringing URLs from its search results. The sad part, however, is that plenty of these requests are bogus, like for example when HBO asked Google to remove HBO.com from its results. These “mistakes” occur mostly because of the high number of automated notices and because rightsholders fail to check the notices’ integrity. As for Mega, NBC Universal claims in its take-down request that Kim’s new baby is linking to an unlicensed copy of its movie “Mama”. Warner Bros. had done the same (read their request here), but for “Gangster Squad”. “The Warner Bros. and NBC Universal requests to Google are censoring our entire homepage. This is in line with the unreasonable content industry behavior we have experienced for years,” Dotcom told TF. “You will recall the illegal takedown of the Megaupload song by Universal Music and the attempts to censor our Mega radio ads. The shutdown of the entire Megaupload site remains the ultimate illegal takedown by the content industry.” Fortunately for the German entrepreneur, Google acknowledged the mistake (in this case) and kept Mega in its search index. “During the Megaupload days over 20% of all takedown notices were bogus. We analysed big samples of notices and most were automated keyword based takedowns that affected a lot of legitimate files. The abuse of the takedown system is so severe that no service provider can rely on takedown notices for a fair repeat infringer policy,” Kim continued. He went on to highlight that these faulty take-down requests had often had an extensive damaging effect on portals that linked to legal content. “The constant abuse of takedown rules and the ignorance of DMCA obligations by the content industry are based on the confidence that the current U.S. administration is protecting this kind of behavior. The political contract prosecution of Megaupload is the best example,” Kim said. “The White House doesn’t appreciate that the DMCA was the biggest contributor to a thriving Internet economy in the U.S.” “From my experience the only people who are acting like criminal lunatics are the copyright extremists who think that the DMCA doesn’t matter. Their agenda is war against innovation. The kind that forces the content industry to adjust an outdated business model.” “History repeats itself and Innovation always wins,” Kim concluded. At the time being, Google is still showing Mega on its results. Will it stay that way? Stay tuned to find out!
  24. Taiwan Seeks to Combat Illegal FileSharing with New Amendment of the Copyright Act The Taiwan government has announced plans for amending the Copyright Act as a measure to eradicate digital piracy by blocking BitTorrent, FTP any other sites that facilitate “flagrant copyright violation” According to IPO Director-General Wang Mei-hwa, after the amending of the law, the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs will ask local ISPs to block access to identified IP addresses and domain names. The websites that are seen as a clear threat to copyright and their owners are those which “engage exclusively in copyright infringement” or “on which acts of copyright violation are evident,” explained Wang. Using the precedent of such legislation already implemented in the US, UK, Spain, South Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia, Wang said Taiwan will not be the first country to enforce such a measure against illegal filesharing. Wang also assured fans of the popular China-based website www.pps.tv that the latter will not be subjected to this blocking since the site has increased considerably its legitimate content. While a timetable for the proposed legislation was not yet specified, it seems that prior to draft amendment being introduced public hearings will be held.
