  2. Nico Rosberg is set to stay alongside championship leader Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes next season after the dominant Formula One team indicated both drivers were signed up for some time to come. "We have long-term relationships with both our drivers," a Mercedes spokesman said, without commenting on a report that the German had signed a new deal keeping him at Mercedes for at least another two years after 2014. Rosberg, son of 1982 world champion Keke, joined Mercedes from Williams in 2010. At the end of 2011 the team announced he had signed a "multi-year contract extension to include the 2013 season and beyond". It had been assumed that the 28-year-old's current contract would expire at the end of this year although there has been regular speculation about an extension in recent months. Rosberg won the season-opening race in Australia and has finished the last four grands prix as runner-up to Hamilton, who is in his second year at the team after replacing retired seven times champion Michael Schumacher. Britain's Hamilton leads Rosberg in the championship by three points ahead of Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix, the sixth race of the year which the German won from pole position in 2013. Rosberg has won four races for Mercedes with his first in China in 2012.
  3. Google is developing a new 7-inch tablet that can capture 3D images, and plans to produce about 4,000 of these prototypes beginning next month, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people briefed on the company's plans. The device, which is part of Google's Advanced Technology and Projects group 'Project Tango,' will have two back cameras, infrared depth sensors and advanced software that can capture precise three-dimensional images of objects, according to the Journal. Google's Project Tango is a platform for Android phones and tablets designed to track the full 3-dimensional motion of the device as you hold it, while simultaneously creating a map of the environment around it. The Project's flagship product, a prototype smartphone, released in February has similar sensors and is designed to create a three-dimensional map of its user's surroundings, the Journal said. Google and other traditionally non-hardware companies such as Amazon.com and Microsoft have made inroads into mobile devices as consumers increasingly access the Web on the go. Google was not immediately available for comment outside regular business hours.
  4. Kim Dotcom has lost his bid to have evidence held by the FBI against him kept a secret. The information , a 200-page document which includes a sampling of 22 million emails relevant to his extradition case, may now be made public. Efforts by Dotcom to gain access to government held documentation against him was also rejected. In 2012 following the raid on his New Zealand mansion, Kim Dotcom fought to gain access to the information being held against him by the FBI. A ruling by District Court Judge David Harvey in May of that year, which stood despite an August appeal, ordered disclosure of all documents relating to the alleged crimes of the so-called Megaupload Conspiracy. While it was agreed that this information should be made available, an order forbidding publication was handed down in respect to the so-called Record of Case, a 200-page document summarizing an estimated 22 million emails and Skype discussions obtained by the FBI during their investigation. Last November a sealed court order by US Judge Liam O’Grady already allowed the U.S. Government to share the summary of evidence from the Megaupload case with copyright holders, something which was actioned before the end of the year. Over in New Zealand, however, Kim Dotcom has been fighting an application by the Crown to make the Record of Case public. That battle came to an end today when Auckland District Court Judge Nevin Dawson rejected an application by Dotcom’s legal team to extend the suppression order placed on the document. According to RadioNZ, the document contains sensitive information including email and chat conversations which suggest that the Megaupload team knew their users were uploading copyrighted material. In another setback, further applications by Dotcom to force Immigration New Zealand, the Security Intelligence Service, and several other government departments to hand over information they hold on him, were also rejected by Judge Dawson. Dotcom’s lawyer Paul Davidson, QC, told Stuff that the battle will continue. “We will press on with our resolve,” he said. source
  5. Activision is the biggest publisher in the gaming industry; its games generate cash that likely have left moguls of other entertainment mediums swimming in envy. Films such as Avatar and Spiderman, or novels like Harry Potter and Twilight, can’t hold a candle to the magnitude of an IP like Call of Duty, not when a Call of Duty game can pull in $800 million in revenue within the first five days of its release… and aim to do so on an annual basis. The thing is, people’s interests change over time. It’s not just the consumers who begin to fatigue on their once favorite franchises, the people making the games at some point yearn to build something different as well. This poses a challenge to mega publishers like Activision, where a third of its massive revenue streams come from a franchise that is showing signs of its age. How does a public video game company, in a market economy where year-over-year growth is not just an expectation but a demand by its investors, replace a franchise like Call of Duty? The Call of Duty series, like the publisher that owns it, grew from fairly humble beginnings. Originally released in 2003 on PC and positioned as a direct competitor to EA’s Medal of Honor, the series would perform moderately well in the first phase of its existence. It wasn’t until Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare released that the series would inject itself into the fabric of mainstream entertainment, not only becoming a juggernaut within the video game industry but a cultural phenomenon as well. Year after year, starting with Modern Warfare, the release of a new Call of Duty (not counting stuff like World at War) marked record-breaking sales. Modern Warfare 2 outperformed its predecessor by nearly doubling the number of units sold. In 2011, Modern Warfare 3 raised the bar by raking in $775 million in sales within five days of release, only to be topped by Black Ops II after that with $800 million. All the while, analysts and critics questioned when the gravy train would finally lose some momentum. Their inquisitiveness was satiated with last years’ release of Call of Duty Ghosts, which marked a decrease in performance over the previous years’ release. Granted, the industry is in the midst of a transition to a new generation of consoles which fractured the user base and staggered the release dates (the PS4 and XB1 versions missed the all-important Black Friday rush), and there was no shortage of competition in the way of Battlefield 4 and Titanfall. Nonetheless it indicates that, as forecasted, the mighty series has likely reached its peak and Activision would need to find an alternative source of revenue to keep the money train at full speed. Bobby Kotick is known for his precocious nature back in the 80s he saw opportunity in Activision, then a fledging publisher millions of dollars in debt. Kotick bought Activision for less than half a million dollars. It’s safe to say that, like most successful businessmen, has the ability to see potential and, with a carefully calculated strategy, turn it into profit. Locked into a ten year contract with Bungie, he’s betting $500 million that Destiny will become his next billion dollar franchise. And likely successor to the Call of Duty throne. To put the amount of money being spent on Destiny into perspective, it’s by far the largest budget of all time for any entertainment release. Last year’s Grand Theft Auto V previously held the record with a whopping $260 million price tag, but Destiny handily overshadows it. In order for Destiny to break even, it would have to sell 15-16 million copies which is unheard of for a new IP. The thing is, Destiny doesn’t have to sell that many copies right off the bat. This is a long-term strategy that will span across multiple releases. The initial investment, to create the engine and the assets, to generate the marketing buzz required to introduce a new IP in today’s crowded market, will carry over into Destiny 2, Destiny 3, etc. Yes, new content will need to be produced and paid for, but you can be sure that another half a billion dollars won’t be needed to get the next game out. Destiny is also not your everyday shooter, at least in theory. It gives players a persistent online world, similar to an MMO, but with the tight gameplay of a Call of Duty or Halo game. It would make slightly more sense to compare Destiny to Planetside or Warframe, but even then (according to Bungie), you’re selling the game short. They promise to give us a deep, cinematic narrative, with vast planets to explore, a flexible multiplayer system that allows you to go it alone, play competitively, or cooperatively with your friends. And there’s customization galore, both in how your character is configured for combat and how they will look. Destiny is being labeled by its developers as the next evolution in first-person shooters, an impressive claim backed by an equally impressive team. Bungie has one of the best track records in the industry, even before Halo they were making fantastic games like Myth and Oni (okay, the latter may have been less than stellar), and Activision knows a mega hit when it sees one, with games including Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Skylanders pushing major numbers. This tells me that Destiny, more importantly than being a tent pole for Activision, could be the game that ends the status quo encumbered on the industry by Call of Duty. It could shake up everything simply by living up to its ambitious promises, and truly usher us into the next generation of video games.
  6. In its quest to make the “best remake ever,” developer 4A Games had to overcome an unusual obstacle: social revolution. Based in Kiev, the capital of the Ukraine, 4A’s office is only six metro stops away from the center of the city, which transformed into a battleground last year amid violent clashes between protesters and the Ukrainian police. According to Huw Beynon, a longtime representative for the company, the developers would go out and join the protests every day after work. It wasn’t until “the bullets started flying” when Beynon “begged them to keep their heads down.” Eerily, the situation in Kiev began to resemble the dreary world of 4A’s Metro games, first-person shooters that take place in a postapocalyptic version of Moscow — the nation that recently took territory away from the Ukraine and still may have troops in its country. I met with Beynon at a recent press event for Metro Redux (out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC this summer), a complete overhaul of the original Metro 2033 game with current-gen graphics and features, to find out more about 4A’s precarious situation. “It has calmed down a lot,” Beynon told GamesBeat. “In Kiev, the real flash point was just before Christmas, where everyone was protesting initially, and then the situation got quite dark and erupted into some days of violence. And then [former Ukrainian president] Viktor Yanukovych left and the new government came in, and I think a lot of people there thought that the worst was over. And now there’s obviously a very different situation developing, which is quite scary, but maybe doesn’t have as much of an immediate impact on Kiev as that particular time frame, when everyone was out on the streets. … “I don’t really want to get more drawn into it now. Who knows how it’s gonna end up there? All I know is that those guys were already under circumstances that are probably completely alien to most Western developers. And to have a situation where your country is potentially plunging into some kind of popular revolution or massive social upheaval, I mean … you just don’t have to deal with that over here.” While Beynon doesn’t visit 4A Games that often — when he’s not talking to media about the Metro series, he’s a global brand manager at Deep Silver — he did travel to Kiev last year with other employees of the publisher to smuggle PlayStation 4 development kits into the country. “This was before any of the stuff had really kicked off,” he said. “It’s quite a scary moment. I don’t know if you’ve seen a PS4 dev kit rather than the test kit: The test kits just look like normal retail things. The dev kits are beastful [sic] pieces. They look like this kind of retro, futuristic 1980s sci-fi — they’re astonishing. But they don’t look like anything else on the planet. And so you have to take them in your hand baggage, and you get some funny looks from customs on the London side when they’re going through the scanner. They’re not entirely sure what that is. “And then you’re really sweating when you get to the other side, because if you get stopped and they say ‘Let’s have a look in there,’ and they don’t know what it is, you’re not entirely sure what’s going to happen. But we got those ones in safely. And then everything kicked off. Our producer, who’s there, and the CEO — Dean Sharpe, who’s been working with the team pretty much since the S.T.A.L.K.E.R days back when they were [GSC Game World], he came back to Deep Silver’s offices in Munich and left with two bags full of Xbox One kits.” While 4A Games’s production team has been working on Metro Redux for a year, it only had the console kits — the two PS4 units from last October and three Xbox One kits from this past January — for a few months now, making it even more remarkable that they were able to stay on track for Redux’s summer release. For now, the developer isn’t in any immediate danger. Beynon assured me that the studio is “safe and sound.” “If that changes and there’s a problem, we would let people know. … They’re looking after themselves,” he said. Shortly after our conversation, 4A Games announced that it was establishing a new studio in the Mediterranean island country of Malta, which will also serve as its new headquarters. The Kiev office will still remain open, but “key members” of its current team, including creative director and 4A cofounder Andrew Prokhorov, will move to Malta.
  7. For those not in the know, a MOBA is a multiplayer online battle arena - think League of Legends or DOTA 2 and you're on the right track. The game will feature five-against-five battles in which you play "legendary heroes from history and fantasy", including Frankenstein, Jack the Ripper, Baron Münchhausen, Joan of Arc, Robin Hood and Little Red Riding Hood. Developed by Crytek's Sofia studio and powered by CryEngine, it's yet to be confirmed what consoles the game will be hitting, though the game is scheduled to be playable at E3 so chances are we'll find out more there. In the meantime, check out the debut teaser trailer above and for all your MOBA needs, be sure to check out IGN Arena, our new MOBA YouTube channel.

  10. Releasing a game to it’s intended audience must be a simple thing …. Right? Well Xbox Players suppose this is a debatable one as this depends sometimes on the sport involved and weather the sport may have a worldwide appeal. For example FIFA from EA Sports, they tailor pack-shots for the country they are releasing in. In the UK last year we saw Gareth Bale take to the front cover with Lionel Messi. Now this was later changed but only the shirt that Bale wore as he signed for Real Madrid. The US cover showed the Manchester United Mexican star Chicharito with Messi instead. But In the case of NASCAR these games generally do not make it onto foreign soil. Well belatedly it seems. Eutechnyx has been the creator for NASCAR since NASCAR 2011: The Game, along with Activision. This was released onto PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and the Wii however it did not see the light of European versions until way later on and this was for digital only. The following games that were released followed the same path as before. Xbox Players acknowledge the facts that this is primarily a North American release, however NASCAR is very popular worldwide. Since the takeover of NASCAR by Deep Silver racing fans were eager to see the game released simultaneously world wide. But their hopes were dashed, and the game saw a North American release as usual. Now it seems that NASCAR 14 will follow the others with a delayed release in Europe but Not on Xbox! Not yet anyway. Xbox Players have reached out to our friends over at Deep Silver to find out if this will happen or not and will report back as soon as we hear from them. Here is the Official Press Release from Deep Silver: As the NASCAR season gains full speed, the race action is also hitting the gas in gamers’ homes with the release of NASCAR 14, the official game to the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship. 11. Last week, Will Ferrell told Rolling Stone that his rivalry will Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith "could become the beginning of a rivalry that will go on until the end of time." It appears that rivalry ended Thursday night on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon with the long-awaited drum-off between the actor and his doppelganger. Sporting matching black leather jackets, Kiss T-shirts, sneakers and blue baseball caps worn backwards, Smith and Ferrell took to the couch to talk to Fallon about the history of their feud, each speaking as the other person. "Do you remember where you were when you heard [about this imposter]?" asked Fallon. "Yeah. I was jammin'. I was jammin' with the Chili Peppers, with my guys. At our jamhouse," said Ferrell. "I'm like, 'Flea, this is bull. I'm tired of not getting enough respect as Chad Smith. I'll be honest, I'm a little high right now." Ferrell then drank from the "Chad Smith Go Juice." The duo did the entire bit as the other person, with Ferrell explaining Smith's charity Little Kids Rock as "taking instruments away from kids." (Smith stayed sincere when describing Ferrell's charity Cancer for College, a charity that gives college scholarships to cancer patients.) "I think you can feel the crispiness in the air," said Fallon. "You know what the audience wants. You know what I want. You guys ready to do this?" The pair then engaged in a "traditional drum-off," with Ferrell seemingly locking into unexpected grooves as Smith and Ferrell increased the intensity and complexity of the solos with each successive round. (It didn't hurt, of course, that Questlove was right to the side of Ferrell, acting as ringer/ghost drummer). Last week, Ferrell lowered the bar on his actual skills, responded to Smith's taunts with, "I have not been practicing. There's no amount of practice that would help me become a good drummer." Ferrell eventually ceded his kit to, naturally, a cowbell as Smith's Red Hot Chili Peppers bandmates surprised the audience and began playing the Blue Oyster Cult (and "More Cowbell") classic "Don't Fear the Reaper" in Seventies clothes. After the band's first performance on a late-night show since 2006, Fallon presented the winner Ferrell with a golden cowbell.
  12. More Facebook users can expect to see a blue cartoon dinosaur popping up in their feeds, reminding them to check their privacy settings. No stranger to privacy fiascos, Facebook had already made the tool available to users who were posting public updates. The feature is designed to remind people how widely they share posts, what apps they use and other privacy issues. Besides providing all of its 1.3 billion users with a privacy check-up, Facebook also will set default controls on new users' posts to "friends." Previously, the posts were programmed so they could be seen by anyone on the Internet, unless the user manually changed the control. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Thursday that the effort to help guard users' privacy is part of Facebook's commitment to "loving the people we serve." That's a "symbolic shift," Zuckerberg said, for a decade-old company that has repeatedly irritated its users with design changes that appeared aimed at sharing personal information more widely to help sell more advertising based on their interests. "We think this is taking our responsibility seriously to make sure people have control over who they are sharing with," Zuckerberg told Facebook shareholders during the Menlo Park, California, company's annual meeting. "Over time, we think that is going to serve everyone who is using Facebook better and help us achieve our long-term goals." The 90-minute meeting was more cordial than last year's gathering, which was held while Facebook's stock was hovering around $24 - more than one-third below its initial public offering price of $38 in May 2012. Boosted by Zuckerberg's successful efforts to sell more ads on mobile devices, Facebook's stock added 3 cents Thursday to close at $60.52.
