Microsoft has approved a torrent client that will work on all its Windows platforms, including Xbox One. Called Torrex Pro, the software is available now in beta form, ahead of a full rollout. Produced by Estonian developers Finebits OÜ, the app is designed to not only download files but also stream content via an inbuilt player. It will support torrent files launched via USB stick, or magnet links searched for directly through the console's browser. A Finebits representative told WIRED the Torrex Pro app is "fully optimised to the gamepad and easy to use," and as a "powerful UWP example, it shows how the same app could work on every Windows 10 device and adapts to it." Other features of the torrent client - though some are planned and not yet active - include the ability to run torrents in the background, a built-in viewer for music, video, images and text files, support for .MKV format video, customisable layout and colour themes, connection encryption, and download priority filters. Plans to bring Torrex Pro to Xbox One were revealed in May. The compatibility is made possible due to Microsoft's push for its Universal Windows Platform - software that runs on any Windows-related device, from smartphones to desktop PCs, via a games console. The nature of UWP means the app should scale to other Microsoft products too. Finebits already lists support for Windows Holographic, despite the Hololens hardware not being on sale anywhere yet. What will be interesting to see now is how, if at all, Microsoft polices the app. Torrenting itself isn't illegal - it's a perfectly legitimate form of file distribution - but the technology is frequently used in online piracy to share movies, TV shows, and pretty much any other form of media. Finebits stresses "this application is designed to download/share legal content" - and there's a tonne of legally available content distributed through torrents, much of it older works that have entered public domain, or modern content offered directly through Bittorrent. However, Microsoft may not turn such a blind eye if hackers find a way to run pirated games torrented through Torrex Pro direct to the Xbox One.

GONE are the days of illegally downloading torrents, with majority of piracy now coming from illicit streaming sites. This is the finding of the Millennials at the Gate report released by Anatomy Media, which explored the piracy habits of Gen Y. The report found that 69 per cent of participants admitted to using one form of video piracy. Illegal streaming sites were listed as the main source of piracy (42 per cent), while the use of emergent mobile apps closely followed (41 per cent). Surprisingly, the downloading of illegal torrents was the least popular method of obtaining illicit content (17 per cent). The shift of using streaming over the downloading of illegal torrents was reflected when participants were asked about the legalities of piracy. Only 33 per cent of those involved in the study viewed downloading and streaming as illegal, while 24 per cent thought both were legal. The remaining 43 per cent held the belief that downloading was illegal, yet streaming was aboveboard. “Their perceptions, we suspect, are in part a function of their user experience. Illegal streaming and downloading sites have evolved. They now look like legitimate services and are particularly deceptive for users,” the report read. “They are professionally produced, well designed websites with network logos and content prominently displayed. There is nothing to distinguish a pirate site from a legitimate content aggregator or to signal to the user that they are participating in something illegal.” In terms of what attracts pirates to one service over another, participants said content accessibility and buffering were the biggest two issues. Another interesting take from the report was 61 per cent of young people admitted sharing passwords for legitimate streaming accounts. “Only 18 per cent of millennials believe it is wrong to share passwords. Regardless of the law or the various terms of service that limit password usage, sharing streaming passwords with friends and family is a common behaviour,” the report read.

A man is preparing a legal battle to find out where the boundaries lie when it comes to offering "fully loaded" Kodi TV devices in the UK. Brian Thompson, who is being taken to court by his local council, says he expects to lose the case. And barring a miracle that's exactly what's going to happen. Year in, year out, people with an interest in Internet file-sharing discuss what is permissible under current legislation. It’s an important exercise if people are to stay on the right side of the law. These discussions have historically taken place among enthusiasts but with the advent of easily accessible piracy tools such as Popcorn Time, modified Kodi, and Showbox, the man in the street his now taking part. One individual that has provoked interest among the public is UK-based Brian ‘Tomo’ Thompson, who was previously raided by police and Trading Standards after selling “fully loaded” Android boxes from his shop in the north-east. Thompson is now being prosecuted by his local council. He says he intends to fight back to discover where the boundaries lie for sellers of similar devices. “All I want to know is whether I am doing anything illegal. I know it’s a grey area but I want it in black and white,” he said this week. “I’m prepared to accept what the court decides but at the moment as far as I’m concerned I’m not breaking the law.” There are many people who share Thompson’s opinion and there’s no shortage of supporters willing the Middlesbrough man on to victory against what some see as a vindictive prosecution. But while this is indeed an attack on the little guy, Thompson is almost certainly about to sacrifice himself for little to no gain. Admittedly the case isn’t completely straightforward, but a conviction seems almost inevitable. Here’s why. Hardware devices – whether a computer, Android phone, tablet, or in this case, a set-top box – are 100% legal. Anyone can buy, sell or trade such devices almost anywhere in the world with no issues. Thompson knows this, describing the blank devices as “just like a big USB stick.” While not a great analogy, for the purposes of the law, that will suffice. On its own, the Kodi media player is also 100% legal. Anyone can download, install, use or give away the software with no problems whatsoever. Installing Kodi on an Android device and selling it is legal almost everywhere and definitely legal in the UK. If Thompson had only done the above – sell Android set-top boxes with basic Kodi installed – he would have no issues with the police or indeed Trading Standards. Individually and combined, the software and devices are completely non-infringing. However, Thompson did not stop there. What he did was sold Android boxes with Kodi installed, plus all the extra third-party addons that allow people to view infringing movies, TV shows, live sports, plus all the other ‘goodies’ that buyers of these boxes demand. Selling devices and/or software designed for infringing copying purposes is illegal in the UK. Encouraging others to break the law never goes in a defendant’s favor either. According to The Northern Echo, since he was raided in March, Thompson has been selling boxes that do not have the addons installed. “These boxes are available from all over the place, not just me, but it’s the downloading of software to watch channels that is apparently causing the problem,” he said. But despite not offering them himself, the businessman continued to encourage his customers to install the addons on devices he supplied, despite being targeted twice previously by the authorities. The advert below is currently available on Thompson’s Facebook page and many of the channels are subscription-only affairs. Security group InfoArmor said that several unsuspecting victims fell when RAUM disseminated three other malicious tools like CryptXXX, Pony and Dridex Trojans. Getting infected with either of the trio is a nightmarish experience for computer users. CryptXXX bars computer apps and important data unless the victim pays ransom to regain access. They also track popular uploaders and hijacks their accounts so they can infect from the source. Now to add up to the mayhem, RAUM is selling their tool through invitation-only black market. InfoArmor said that it is tough to gain access in this black market because stringent verification system is in place to check the background of buyers. With these predicaments at hand, the only solution InfoArmor has is avoidance of pirated PC games, software and operating systems. InfoArmor said that they traced RAUM from a known EURO-based organized blackhats group. Then they verified the information through underground web hangout that hackers are frequenting. Meanwhile, Tech Worm reported that InfoArmor head Andrew Komarov said RAUM analyzes trending torrents then repacks the final version with malwares. Komarov identifies PirateBay, TorrentHound and Extra Torrent as most victimized sites. RAUM went as far as taking advantage of weak accounts and uses botnet logs to seed using known uploaders without getting traced. InfoArmor was able to analyze at least 1.7 million records infecting social media, corporate data and other online accounts at mind-boggling pace.
