  7. Routing ‘Feature’ Can Expose VPN Users’ Real IP-Addresses A VPN is generally touted as an ideal tool to remain anonymous online, but this is more easily said than done. This week ProstoVPN revealed a widespread issue that can in many cases expose the true IP-addresses of users, unless proper action is taken. A few weeks ago we covered a security flaw which allowed attackers to uncover the real IP-addresses of VPN users, if their providers allow forwarding on their network. The news was picked up widely as it affected millions of users. However, it is just one of the many possible exploits VPN users are facing. This week another issue was highlighted by ProstoVPN. This “vulnerability” affects both users with a direct connection and those with routers that have UPnP port forwarding enabled. The issue boils down to a rather basic network routing feature where UDP listening software (e.g. torrent clients) respond to packets that are sent to the user’s ISP IP-address, through the VPN interface. This means that a potential attacker can link a VPN IP-address to a user’s ISP IP-address. The problem https://torrentfreak.com/images/route.png The issue affects users on all operating systems and is not always easy to fix on the user end. VPN providers with custom software can address it, but with the standard OpenVPN software users have to take action themselves. While the scope of the issue is large, as many users and providers have yet to address the issue, it requires quite a bit of effort to carry out an attack. It basically requires the attacker to send UDP packets to the entire Internet. In addition, there’s the possibility of false positives which means that it’s harder to pinpoint the exact ISP IP-address. With this in mind, it seems unlikely that monitoring companies will attempt to expose every BitTorrent user with a VPN. ProstoVPN informs TorrentFreak that they alerted 11 providers, and two confirmed that they have fixed the issue with a software update. “Information about this ‘feature’ was sent to 11 VPN providers and only five of them replied: Private Internet Access and Perfect Privacy have released updated software which blocks incoming connections.” Not all providers were equally responsive and one suggested that the issue should be addressed by the users. There is some truth to that, but the same provider does protect its users against similar problems on the user-side, such as DNS, IPv6 and WebRTC leaks. While there’s no need for outright panic, it is a good development that these type of problems are being highlighted. It prompts VPN providers to take action and users to remain vigilant. That said, it also shows that 100% anonymity is pretty much impossible. More details on the routing “feature” and its consequences are available in ProstoVPN’s article and in the statement published by Perfect Privacy. Source : Torrentfreak
  8. The pirated screener of Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight" has been traced back to a copy sent to a top Hollywood executive. The FBI is currently investigating the breach, which is part of series of leaked screeners that appeared online in recent days. Meanwhile, The Hateful Eight has been shared more than a million times through various unauthorized channels. Over the past several days more than a dozen high quality screeners of Hollywood films have appeared online, including The Hateful Eight, The Revenant and Steve Jobs. Screeners are advance copies of recent movies, which are generally sent out to critics and awards voters. These high quality releases are subject to intense security precautions by the studios, as they are highly sought after by online pirates. This year there appears to be a serious breach in the security process and Hollywood has involved the FBI to uncover where. THR now reports that a watermark on the leaked copy of Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight points to Andrew Kosove, the co-CEO of production-finance company Alcon Entertainment. The screener that was intended for Kosove was reportedly signed off by an office assistant at the company. The Hollywood executive, however, says he never received the copy. “I’ve never seen this DVD. It’s never touched my hands. We’re going to do more than cooperate with the FBI. We’re going to conduct our own investigation to find out what happened,” Kosove told THR. The screener eventually ended up online where it was released by the P2P-group Hive-CM8. The copy of The Hateful Eight is not the only leak to originate from this group, but it’s unknown whether any of the other releases are also linked to Alcon Entertainment’s co-CEO. The Hollywood company is cooperating with the FBI and the film’s distributor The Weinstein Company to find out what exactly happened. Kosove hopes that the feds can help to get to the bottom of the matter. “At the moment, nobody knows anything, but I promise we will find out. And I am praying that it had nothing to do with anyone at our beloved company,” he told Deadline. Every year more than a dozen screeners leak online, often with direct ties to entertainment industry insiders. Last year a pirated copy of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was linked to Ellen DeGeneres, and Howard Stern’s name was also connected to a Super 8 screener. At the time of writing The Hateful Eight has been shared more than a million times through various unauthorized channels. The film is set to premiere in the U.S. on Christmas day. 9. A DRM system popular in the high-end audio creation market appears to have been cracked. iLok2, the successor to iLok, had remained secure since its release but a flood of software during the past few days points to its demise. Perhaps unsurprisingly, some users are declaring that Christmas has come early. With the majority of all commercially available software slushing round on the Internet in pirate form, companies have always sought secure anti-piracy mechanisms to protect their products. One such solution is iLok from security company PACE. Now on its second generation, iLok2 is a relatively cheap proprietary USB dongle that acts as a license storage device for software protected by PACE Anti-Piracy. While iLok1 allows customers to carry up to 118 licenses, iLok2 can carry up to 500. “Once a license is delivered to an iLok account, your user simply downloads the license to their iLok. It’s as simple as dragging and dropping,” the company explains. “The license is stored safely and securely inside the solid-state iLok smart key and can then be used to provide the authorization for protected software to run on any computer where that software is installed.” https://torrentfreak.com/images/ilok.jpg Over time, iLok appears to have gained a lot of traction within the pro-audio community, those individuals using sophisticated and often very expensive software such as Avid’s Pro Tools to create music. Licenses are managed from within the iLok License Manager, as illustrated in the image below. https://torrentfreak.com/images/ilok-manager.jpg However, after remaining somewhat secure iLok2 – and by extension all of the software development companies that use PACE’s system – appear to have a problem on their hands. During the past several days dozens of pieces of software that use the iLok system have started to appear online. https://torrentfreak.com/images/audioutopia.png The releases come courtesy of cracking group AudioUTOPIA who explain with their Pro Tools release how their technique completely negates the need for the iLok system to be in place. “Pro Tools setup will install the iLok driver however it’s not necessary for the release to work, you can disable it by pressing Windows key+R then typing services.msc, find “PACE License Services” right click and choose stop,” the group explains. “Additionally you can removed the entire thing by going to Windows programs and features and uninstalling “PACE License Support Win64.” https://torrentfreak.com/images/audioutopia-nfo.jpg Whether AudioUTOPIA’s crack represents a permanent defeat of the iLok system remains to be seen but currently pirates are celebrating a flood of software just in time for the festive season. “Oh boy! Awesome fuckin release!” declared one. “I stopped believing in Santa a long time ago but I may just have to re-evaluate that assessment.” The reverse could very well be the case in the PACE household this Christmas.
  10. Various Hollywood movie studios are doing everything they can to contain the fallout from the ongoing leak of awards screeners. In order to contain the leaks, the film companies are sending out thousands of takedown requests to various web services, including torrent sites and Google. hatefLast weekend several high quality screener copies started to leak online. More than a dozen screeners have leaked thus far, including titles such as The Hateful Eight, The Revenant, Creed, Concussion and Steve Jobs. And according to one release ‘group’ many more are coming. For Hollywood the prospect of so many quality leaks just before Christmas is a disaster, especially since several of the movies have yet to premiere in theaters. The FBI is trying to catch the source of the leaks and has already traced The Hateful Eight screener back to a Hollywood executive. In the meantime, several Hollywood studios have gone into damage control mode. To limit the availability of the movies various studios have instructed several piracy monitoring companies to locate copies online and target them with takedown requests. In just one day, Google alone received thousands of takedown requests. This week The Weinstein Company sent Google its first batch of DMCA notices in nearly a year, asking the search engine to remove 1,067 links across 189 different domains. File-hosting services Rapidgator and Uploaded were the top targets, with more than 100 links each. Entertainment Film Distributors is also protecting its stake in The Hateful Eight, with varying success. While Google removed many links, it took no action against a Reddit thread which discussed the latest leaks. Rightly so, as the topic doesn’t appear to link to any infringing material. Infringing Reddit thread? redditscr The Hateful Eight is not the only leak that has triggered a lot of takedown notices. Several copyright holders are sending a lot of notices for The Revenant, Columbia Pictures is targeting Concussion, while Twentieth Century Fox is doing the same for The Peanuts Movie. NBC Universal is protecting Legend, and so on. In addition to Google, many other online streaming and torrent sites are being contacted directly by the movie studio’s representatives. On some torrent sites copies of the leaked screeners almost completely disappeared at one point, and new uploads continue to be removed. Below is a screenshot of a torrent page for the Legend screener, which KickassTorrents removed after it was notified by a rightsholder. One of the removed torrents at KAT kat-scr While these takedown notices are not new, the volume appears to be much larger than when regular leaks appear online. This is no surprise, as several of the leaked films are not even in theaters yet, which makes them more likely to be pirated. Unfortunately for the Hollywood studios not all sites are receptive to takedown notices. The Pirate Bay, for example, notoriously ignores such requests and the leaked screeners remain widely available there. So whether the takedown avalanche will actually deter pirates has yet to be seen.

  14. DUBLIN native Jimbo Lyons ‘gave a little back’ today whilst downloading a copyrighted film screener, letting it seed for a little bit while he surfed the web, he confirmed.Securing the movie torrent on a proxy address, the mastermind downloader completed the process in less than eight minutes, a time only made possible by his fibre-powered broadband. “Some load of bleeding screeners on kickass the last couple of days.” the 37-year-old solicitor confirmed. “If it wasn’t for people like me seeding, there would be nothing to illegally download. I used to be a ‘quit when downloads complete’ kinda guy, but that changed when I heard about all the damage it causes the torrent community.” Seeding is when a user leaves their BitTorrent client open following a download, aiding the distribution of the desired movie, document or audio file. Opponents of the activity claim the act is illegal, costing the film industry billions every year in lost revenue. “It’s important people get the message across that sharing is caring, and not to forget to leave your file seed for that little bit longer. You know, to give something back to the people who truly deserve it – the uploader.” Lyons concluded.
  15. Kim Dotcom should be sent to the United States to stand trial on criminal charges, a New Zealand court has ruled. In a decision delivered in district court this afternoon, Judge Nevin Dawson ruled the internet entrepreneur and his three co-accused - Mathias Ortmann, Bram van der Kolk and Finn Batato - were eligible for extradition to the US. The FBI had been seeking their extradition on charges of copyright infringement, money-laundering and racketeering related to the now-defunct file-storage website Megaupload. It was a result the Megaupload founder has been trying to prevent since his 2012 arrest during a dramatic raid on his mansion north of Auckland.During a 10-week court hearing that ended last month, the men's lawyers argued Megaupload was created simply to allow people to store and share large files. But the FBI claimed the site wilfully breached copyright on a mass scale by hosting illegally-created movie, music and software files. The agency said the site aided and abetted users who uploaded such files by paying them rewards. The court found in favour of the US arguments, which were presented by Crown prosecutors. The "overwhelming preponderance" of evidence against the men established a prima facie case, Judge Dawson said. All four were eligible for extradition on all counts, he said. Under New Zealand's Extradition Act, Justice Minister Amy Adams must now decide whether to confirm the court's decision and go ahead with the extraditions. But speaking to media briefly after the verdict was revealed, Mr Dotcom said he had already filed an appeal "We have filed an appeal, I'm still on bail, and we'll go through the whole process to the very end. I'm disappointed, but that's all I have to say."
  16. We are sorry for the unexpected downtime over the past 24 hours. All4Nothin was compromised and someone decided to give themselves owner privileges and began deleting our torrents and some user accounts. We have now made some changes to our source code, and we will remain invite only until further notice. We have restored a back up, but we have lost a small amount of recent torrents. So if you are able to help and upload any torrents you may have, it would be appreciated. Rest assured that they did not gain access to our database or sensitive data. But we do still suggest updating your password, and ensuring that you update it on a regular basis. Free Leech is still active on all torrents and will also be extended due to our downtime. Thanks you for your patience during this time!
  17. Internet millionaire and Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom and his three associates are eligible for extradition to the US to face criminal charges over massive copyright infringement on Megaupload (now-shuttered), the court has ruled citing "overwhelming" evidence. On Tuesday afternoon, New Zealand District Court Judge Nevin Dawson told the court that the United States had presented enough evidence against Dotcom and his co-defendants and that they should be surrendered to the US. US prosecutors want Dotcom, and colleagues Mathias Ortmann, Bram van der Kolk and Finn Batato to stand trial on charges of copyright infringement, racketeering, and money laundering. No matter what happens in Court tomorrow, I'll be fine. Don't worry. Enjoy your Christmas & know that I'm grateful to have you, my friends," Dotcom tweeted before the court hearing. The court ruling comes almost three years after the New Zealand police raided Dotcom's Auckland mansion at the request of the FBI and in the same year the US government launched extradition proceedings. Video of High-Profile Armed Raid at Kim Dotcom's House It was a high-profile armed raid (you can watch the raid video below), but it has taken almost four years for the courts to reach a decision on whether to send Dotcom to America. Officials say Dotcom's file-sharing service Megaupload served copyright contents, including music, movies, electronic books, television programs, as well as business and entertainment software on 'a massive scale. The US government estimates the harm to film studios and record companies was more than $500 Million (ÂŁ322 Million). However, Dotcom and three defendants now have 15 days to appeal the court ruling. "Justice was not served today," Dotcom's California-based lawyer Ira Rothken tweeted, confirming their plans to appeal the US extradition request in the High Court."The Kim Dotcom team looks forward to having the US request for extradition reviewed in the High Court. We have no other comments at this time," Rothken said. However, the defendants are allowed to remain out on bail in the meantime. Although the judge insisted that all the defendants should be ordered to report to probation every day.
  18. Alcon Exec In FBI Probe Of Pirated ‘Hateful Eight’ Screener: “I Have Never Seen This DVD” The FBI has traced a stolen awards screener of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight to Alcon Entertainment co-CEO Andrew Kosove, and agents paid him a visit at his office today. Kosove, who was notified of the theft by the Bureau on Monday, told Deadline he is cooperating fully with the investigation and denies any involvement in the pirating of the film. “I have never seen this DVD,” Kosove said in a phone interview. “I was not even aware that it had come into the office. I have zero idea what happened. But we are proactively cooperating with the FBI to find out what happened. At the moment, nobody knows anything, but I promise we will find out. And I am praying that it had nothing to do with anyone at our beloved company.” If it turns out that someone in the office stole the screener, he said, “There will be appropriate measures.” By that he means they’ll be fired and face criminal charges. This isn’t the first time The Hateful Eight has been marred by piracy, of course. Tarantino famously declared the film dead in January 2014, after his draft script — shared with only a handful of people — leaked online and several sites posted it in full. At least this time, Hateful Eight is not alone. The leak is part of a potentially much more serious operation by a group calling itself Hive-CM8, which claims to possess some 40 leaked Oscar screeners it intends to distribute online. In addition to Tarantino’s Western, Alejandro G. Iñårritu’s The Revenant also was leaked as a demonstration. Whether or not the actual culprit is identified, the theft isn’t unique nor is the problem new. Last year, for example, the feds got involved after digital copies of The Expendables 3 hit the Internet before the film hit theaters. And in 2011, pirated copies of the J.J. Abrams film Super 8 were traced back to The Howard Stern Show. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the Hateful Eight screener theft’s connection to Alcon.
  19. Quentin Tarantino's Christmas blockbuster "The Hateful Eight" has leaked online — almost a full week before it launches in the cinema. It's not the only blockbuster to make its way online recently. "Creed," "The Revenant," "Steve Jobs," "Legend," and "Joy" have all popped up on piracy sites, according to a round-up by torrent news site TorrentFreak, with one piracy group promising dozens more in the weeks ahead. So what's the reason behind this piracy bonanza? It's all down to the time of year. No, not Christmas — awards season. Ahead of the Oscars, the BAFTAs, the Golden Globes, and everything else, the judges for these events are sent out review copies, or screeners, of the films to watch. These, inevitably, make their way online. These leaks are inevitably some of the best films of the year — because those are the ones sent to awards judges for consideration. "The Hateful Eight" on a popular piracy torrent site. The terms "DVDScr" and "DVSCREENER" indicate they are advance screener copies sent out; the provenance of a pirated movie is typically signalled with a tag like this. It might have "CAM" to indicate it was recorded on a camera in the theatre, for example, or "BrRip" to signal it was ripped from a Blu-Ray copy. The tag at the end — "Hive-CM8," or "ShAaNiG" — refers to the group that leaked that file. It's there so they can get recognition for their "work," and compete with one another to release the highest-quality files fastest. Of course, movie studios aren't keen to see this happen, and will include anti-piracy measures with the films to try and prevent it. The DVDs sent out might contain DRM (digital rights management) software that tries to prevent unauthorised copying taking place. And the films will often have unique watermarks, so that if one leaks, the studio can (in theory) trace it back to whoever was sent that particular watermarked version. But, inevitably, some always make it out anyway — and this year is shaping up to be a particularly good one for pirates. Hive-CM8 — who leaked "The Hateful Eight" — claims to have a whopping 40 films to release. "DVDScreener 1 of 40, will do them all one after each other, started with the hottest title of this year, the rest will follow," the group say. "The Hateful Eight" has been affected by a leak before. In 2014, its script was leaked online — prompting director Quentin Tarantino to cancel the film, before changing his mind. The plot focuses on bounty hunters in post-Civil War Wyoming.
  20. The BPI says that the leaders of both its Content Protection Unit and Head of Internet Investigations will be removed following an anti-piracy shake-up. The music industry group reports that the restructuring will enable it to better focus on copyright takedowns, blocking file-sharing websites, and working with the police. When it comes to music-focused anti-piracy activity in the UK, the British Recorded Music Industry (BPI) is the absolute market leader. Acting on behalf of many hundreds of recording industry members, there’s little doubt that the BPI has its finger on the pulse of local infringement. While the effects of its work can at times be very public, the group’s anti-piracy activities are mostly carried out behind closed doors, from the removing of hundreds millions of links from Google’s search results to the wholesale blocking of hundreds of ‘pirate’ websites. But despite these powerful moves, the BPI feels that it can do better. Previously the group operated its Copyright Protection Unit (CPU) and Internet Investigations unit as separate entities but will now restructure so that the former effectively absorbs the latter. Speaking with Music Week the BPI confirmed that there will be at least two high-profile casualties following the reshuffle. David Wood, Director of the Copyright Protection Unit, was responsible for tackling copyright infringement both on and offline. He was also responsible for managing the BPI’s Regional Investigators and its in-house Internet Investigations Team. He will now move on. Also stepping aside is John Hodge, the BPI’s Head of Internet Investigations. A former police officer working in Internet Child Protection, Hodge had maintained his role at the BPI since July 2011 while liaising with Europol and Interpol, among others. The BPI said that while it values the contributions of Wood and Hodge, the restructuring will allow its Copyright Protection Unit to focus on removing illegal content and blocking websites. It will also continue its “Follow the Money” approach by targeting advertisers, payment processors and web hosting services. An as-yet-unnamed individual will become the new head of the BPI’s reshuffled Copyright Protection Unit (CPU) and will continue the organization’s work with the police and Trading Standards while investigating piracy both on and offline. “The way people discover and consume music has changed beyond recognition since the early days of our anti-piracy work,” said BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor. “Copyright infringement remains a challenge but we have made substantial progress against it in the UK, removing hundreds of millions of links to illegal copies and blocking access to the most damaging illegal sites, while continuing to remove physical counterfeit discs and hard drives from sale and prosecute those who seek to make money from distributing music illegally.” But while the BPI has often focused on the stick, Taylor says that the BPI will also seek to encourage consumers “to value music and understand why they should choose to source it legally.” Source torrentfreak.com
  21. “The Hateful Eight” and “The Revenant” have leaked to piracy sites after screeners were sent to voters for awards consideration, according to data issued .Both films were slated for a Christmas Day release. Leonardo DiCaprio’s “Revenant” is being plundered by pirates at the fastest rate; having attracted over 739,580 unique IP addresses downloading the film in the last 24 hours. Quentin Tarantino’s “Hateful Eight” drew 569,153 IP addresses, while “Creed,” which is already in theaters, rounded out the top three most popular torrents of the last day with 499,082. This is yet another roadblock for Tarantino, whose “Hateful Eight” script leaked online last year, almost killing the bloody Western entirely. Fox, Weinstein Co. and Warner Bros. did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Other Oscar contenders made available online illegally in the past few days include Jennifer Lawrence’s “Joy,” Michael Fassbender’s “Steve Jobs,” Cate Blanchett’s “Carol,” Brie Larson’s “Room,” Tom Hardy’s “Legend,” Chris Hemsworth’s “In the Heart of the Sea” and Saoirse Ronan’s “Brooklyn.” Hive-CM8 is one of the piracy groups taking credit for the leaks. “DVDScreener 1 of 40. Will do them all one after each other, started with the hottest title of this year, the rest will follow,” Hive-CM8 said after posting “Hateful Eight” online. According to TorrentFreak, the illegal copy of the film is “extremely clean and free from timestamps.” This has become common in piracy circles in recent years during “Oscar screener season.” Ellen DeGeneres, last year’s Academy Awards host, was linked to a leaked screener of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.” The pirated copy of the Ben Stiller dramedy that surfaced on file-sharing pirate networks in January 2014 included a watermark with “Ellen DeGeneres.” More recently, “The Expendables 3” — a Sylvester Stallone-starrer — leaked online three weeks ahead of the U.S. premiere, hurting its box office potential. After the “Game of Thrones” season five premiere wound up online this summer from an advance DVD screener, HBO shifted to a streaming-only policy for advance reviews following years of mailing out DVDs to critics and journalists.
