AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD boy died from an aggressive form of cancer just hours after his parents made a desperate plea for donations for experimental treatment. Luke Bell, from Darlington in County Durham, had been battling neuroblastoma since April 2017. His parents were recently told the cancer had spread and last night they confirmed he died “peacefully” and “surrounded by the people he loved most” on Sunday. Mark and Becky Bell wrote on the TeamLuke Facebook page: “Last night our world was changed forever. "This latest battle has been one too many, and our little superhero is no longer with us. “Luke passed away peacefully, comfortable and in his favourite place surrounded by the people he loved the most. “Words can't describe just how devastated and heartbroken we are; though we can take some consolation from the fact he is now free of pain.” Luke’s parents went on to thank everyone who had supported him and the family. They added: “As a family we would like to thank everyone that has been involved in Luke’s journey, whether it’s been donating, fundraising, messages of support or sharing his story. “The number of people that have reached out to use over the last 20 months has been a real source of strength and we will always be grateful for that. “Now is not a time for sadness, for Luke wouldn't stand for it. Now is the time for focusing on the positives, the amazing memories and the incredible impact he has had on so many lives. “At only eight years old Luke has shown such a huge amount of strength, bravery and courage to fight as long as he did. “The world seems a darker place today without his infectious smile.” The couple’s Facebook post comes a day after the pair made a public plea to raise £50,000 for experimental treatment at the Paediatric Cancer Centre in Barcelona, Spain. Luke had been accepted onto the trial and was due to begin treatment on January 21. The treatment costs £140,000 and his parents had already raised £95,000. Mark told the Mail on Sunday: “In November, his NHS consultant said that his cancer had spread to his skeletal system and that his bone marrow is now made up of 70 per cent cancerous neuroblastoma cells. “We were told he has only got weeks – or a few months at best – to live.” Fewer than 100 children a year in the UK are diagnosed with neuroblastoma. Luke underwent 11 rounds of chemotherapy and surgery to remove a large tumour, but after being told he was clear in January the doctors said it had returned four months later.

THE Christmas spirit came to visit after a train station was transformed into a dining hall to give 200 homeless people a free dinner. The yuletide party was held at Birmingham New Street station for those who do not have a place to call their own. It included a hot three-course meal at a round-table area on the lower concourse. A DJ, carol singers and even Santa Claus made an appearance at the event last night hosted by Midlands Langer Seva Society supported by Network Rail. The evening was about bringing people together at a time of year when people struggle with loneliness. Randhir Singh, chief executive of the society, told Birmingham Live: “Midlands Langar Seva Society are out seven nights a week, not only across Birmingham but across the UK. “Our main purpose is to serve humanity and serve hot meals to people less fortunate than ourselves, give out hats, clothes and warm clothing and give hope.” He added that this time of year is when people start to miss their families and the suicide rate is high. Louise Gall was served a hot meal by volunteers in festive dress and said she spent the night before sleeping outside the station in the freezing cold. The 41-year-old added: “What they have done for us is amazing. “I live on the streets and without this I wouldn't have had a Christmas meal, the only way I could have had a hot meal would be by begging on the streets.” Singh said he recognises about 90 per cent of the homeless who came as the number is said to be at crisis levels. Donated food, soft drinks and Christmas crackers decorated the round tables. Craig Stenning, deputy station manager, said it was all about giving back to the community. The society, which won a TSB Local Pride of Birmingham Award in April 2017, is a non-profit organisation that aims to help the homeless and provide food to those in need.

A DUNKIRK hero who became one of Britain’s oldest transgender people has died at the age of 99. Louise Jennings lived as Robert for 70 years and was married to wartime sweetheart Edith for more than four decades. But she changed genders after Edith died of cancer in 1989. Louise once said: “I don’t think I spent a long time thinking about it. I rather felt I was wrong anyway.” She was called up to the Army at 20 in 1939 and became a sergeant in the intelligence team of the Durham Light Infantry 10th Battalion. In June 1940 Louise was evacuated from Dunkirk and later said: “There was no use being scared. I was very lucky.” She returned to her base near Darlington, where she met Edith. The couple, who never had kids, moved to Sheffield after the war. Louise got a job at a concrete factory and Edith worked at a firm of solicitors. She had the op in her 70s. Louise said: “Edith knew that whatever I did, it would be honest.” Her funeral will be held in Sheffield on January 4.

EGYPTIAN president Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi has demanded the country’s citizens lose weight – and told TV shows to bar overweight presenters and guests. The country has the world’s highest rate of obesity and the president has won praise for trying to address the problem, though others accused him of fat shaming. In televised comments, the general-turned-president railed about the number of overweight people he sees and told Egyptians they must take better care of themselves. “The second I walk into any place I look at things you cannot possibly imagine I would notice,” said El-Sissi. “And I ask myself 'what is this? Who are these people? Why are these people not looking after themselves?'" The president said physical education should become core curriculum at schools and universities and suggested TV shows shouldn't let presenters or guests on the air if they are overweight. The next morning, before sunrise, he drove his point home by energetically cycling to the national military academy in a Cairo suburb. There told cadets that he was adamant they wouldn't leave basic training before fulfilling fitness requirements. A study found 35 percent of adults some 19 million people in the country of 100 million are obese, again the world's highest rate, as well as 10.2 percent of children, or around 3.6 million. The voice-controlled virtual assistant was overloaded with requests — leaving users unable to get any response. Alexa instead said after the crash around 10am: “Sorry, I’m having trouble understanding you right now.” It left thousands of new Echo owners feeling far from festive. Frankie Lyons tweeted: “Arghhhh my Alexa is down!!! Come on Amazon, what’s happening? Got no Xmas songs on!!!” Alexa works by sending voice commands via an Amazon Echo device to a server, where a computer deciphers them. Instructions then go back to the Echo, which can play music, read the news and weather and perform tasks including giving reminders and turning lights on. Demi-Leigh Elson, 21, from Stoke, Staffordshire, had been planning a quiet Christmas with her partner Aaron Ouseley, and her kids, Lola Lea, three, and two-year-old Codie-Ray, two, last year when baby Oakley unexpectedly arrived. Demi-Leigh's labour was so quick she didn't have time to get to hospital and gave birth as her youngsters opened their festive gifts. She told Fabulous Digital: “I was due on Boxing Day and my main worry was that if he came at Christmas, I would miss seeing the kids open their presents, and I would miss Christmas dinner with the family. “But we managed to fit everything in. I actually felt the first strong contraction as Lola opened her last present. It’s almost as though Oakley knew he had to wait." She continued: “It was the perfect Christmas Day. My older kids had both asked for a baby from Santa and so they thought Oakley had been delivered down the chimney. “I’d say it’s worth having a baby at Christmas just so my partner has to cook the dinner.” Demi-Leigh and Aaron, 28, met in 2014 and she was already mum to Lola-Lea. The following year, they had Codie-Rae. In May 2017 Demi-Leigh fell pregnant again. Their baby was due on Boxing Day. But early on Christmas morning, as she watched her older children opening gifts, Demi-Leigh felt her first twinges of labour. She said: “I just gritted my teeth and ignored it because I was determined to watch my children open their presents. It was just as the last one was opened that I felt a strong contraction and I knew It was time. “It was as if my baby knew he was allowed to come now. “Aaron rang an ambulance but we quickly realised when the paramedics arrived that I wouldn’t have time to get to hospital – and that our baby would be born at home. “My main concern was my carpet because we’d just had a new carpet laid in the living room and I didn’t want a mess all over it.” Demi-Leigh’s mum, Nikki, arrived to look after the children and Oakley was born, weighing 6lb 11ozs, in the couple’s living room at midday. Demi-Leigh continued: “He arrived only 20 minutes after the paramedics came so it was all very quick. “I was trying to stay calm for the sake of our other kids. He was my first natural birth because I was induced for the other two, so it was lovely with the Christmas tree and the fairy lights in the background. “We went to hospital for checks but we were allowed home again just after 3pm – in time for Christmas dinner, which Aaron cooked all on his own. “I’d say it’s worth having a baby at Christmas just so my partner has to cook the dinner. “It was the perfect day and his big brother and sister were thrilled – they think Santa brought the baby down the chimney for them. This year will be very special, with our little family around us.”

THE BBC has removed the word “snowpeople” from a kids’ show after parents branded it “politically-correct garbage”. Host Catie Munnings, 21, tells CBeebies’ Catie’s Amazing Machines: “Snow is amazing. You get to build snowpeople and go sledging.” A source at the BBC said bosses were flooded with protests — a month after The Sun revealed the Beeb’s use of gender-free terms. Dad Simon Guard tweeted: “Put CBeebies on for my daughter and they are referring to ‘snowpeople’. “More PC garbage and indoctrination from the BBC. Another reason to abolish the licence fee.” Another dad called Chris blasted: “So we can’t say snowman any more.” Repeats and a version on the iPlayer now see rally driver Catie saying: “Snow’s amazing, you get to play out and have fun”, before testing a snow plough. The source said: “Bosses admitted defeat and edited the show. Goodness knows what they were thinking but it’s a rare case of common sense.” BBC chiefs did not comment.

A DOCTOR has been struck off after he hid his £100,000-a-year salary across 12 bank accounts to dodge paying child support. Paediatrics specialist Dr Collen Nkomo, 40, claimed he was unable to make payments for his nine-year-old son following his split from the child’s mum. The father of three repeatedly lied to the Child Support Agency about his income to avoid paying £40,800 in maintenance over a two-and-a-half year period. But he earned up to £10,000 a month as a locum GP and at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. CSA inquiries revealed he was earning £115,000 over one 15-month period and had more than £126,000 being transferred across six Halifax and six HSBC accounts. In 2017, Zimbabwe-born Nkomo, of Altrincham, Greater Manchester, was given a suspended jail sentence after admitting fraud. Last week a disciplinary panel ordered he be erased from the medical register. The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service in Manchester heard the fraud took place between April 2013 and November 2015. Nkomo claimed he failed to make payments because he was upset at being denied access to his son. He has remarried and is now paying off the arrears. Panel chairman Russell Butland said: “Dr Nkomo’s actions were dishonest, calculated and persistent.”

HALF of pet dogs are obese or overweight, a study shows. Experts blame too many treats and too little exercise, in particular over the festive season. Tubby pooches are likelier to have arthritis, diabetes, heart problems and shorter lifespans. Some nine per cent are obese and 41 per cent overweight, health tracker firm PoochPlay’s analysis of 2,600 found. Meanwhile, a third never exercise enough, a separate PoochPlay study of 3,600 said. At ideal weight, owners should be able to easily feel a dog’s ribs. A large one like a labrador needs up to 1½hrs’ daily exercise. Small ones like chihuahuas need 30 minutes. PoochPlay boss Ravi Sharma said educating owners about food and fitness would “help our pets live longer, healthier and happier lives”.

A HOMELESS dementia sufferer missing for years has been found living on the streets and reunited with his family. The man, known only as Declan, miraculously found his family just before Christmas after a mum posted his story online. Mum-of-three Siobhan Foran wanted help to get warm clothes for Declan and asked people to donate on Facebook. She wanted jumpers, hats and socks for the man who she found living on the streets of Northern Moor, Manchester. But after posting her appeal, a woman claiming to be Declan's niece contacted her saying he had been missing for two years. She told Siobhan he had dementia and the family had been trying to find him for years - with no idea he was homeless. Siobhan told the Manchester Evening News: "He had been there for a long time and is such a lovely guy. He never asks for money and just wishes everyone a happy Christmas." She said he hadn't looked well last week and was suffering with the cold. So the mum asked if there was anyone she could call for him, after delivering a suitcase of supplies. She added: "He told me that he had a daughter in Oldham and said that he wanted to clean himself up and go and find her. "The following day, I got a call from a woman telling me she was his niece and that she had seen my post. "She said he had been missing for two years and they had no idea he was homeless." So Siobhan took to the streets to find Declan, before helping him reunite with his family. He is back with his family in Oldham, ready for Christmas, and looking to find a permanent home. Yesterday we told how a mum melted hearts by revealing how an elderly stranger gave her baby a Christmas present – six months after knocking on her door to ask for directions. Robyn Gordon answered the door during the summer to find a "lil old man" trying to find the address of a friend in her street in Pemberton, Greater Manchester. The man, known only as Ray, who is believed to be a former teacher, asked to see Robyn's baby before going on his way. Robyn thought nothing more about it until Thursday last week when Ray, aged around 70, returned to put an envelope through her door. She was reduced to tears after opening it to find £40 cash and a hand-written note telling her to get something for her 11-month-old son, LJ.
