  10. Chilling photographs have emerged showing child killer Russell Bishop joining the search for two schoolgirls after he brutally murdered them. Bishop, 52, was today convicted of strangling nine-year-olds Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway in Brighton, England on October 9, 1986, in a case that was dubbed the Babes in the Woods murders. Eerie pictures showed him looking unphased as he smoked a cigarette a matter of hours after the horrific killings, as well as handing out leaflets three years later as the desperate search for their murderer ramped up, The Sun reports. Bishop, who was friends with the parents of the little girls, was cleared of the double murder in 1987 but in his second trial has been convicted of killing them thanks to a DNA breakthrough linking him to a discarded sweatshirt. The investigation into the two girls’ deaths is the largest and longest-running inquiry Sussex Police have ever had. A collection of black and white images were released during the trial, with one showing a dead-eyed Bishop sitting in a field smoking as people searched for their bodies. He showed no emotion as he held a cigarette in his left hand, hours after he sexually assaulted and strangled the pair in Wild Park. Bishop also appeared to be “grief stricken” when officers told him the pair were dead following a police hunt. In 1989, he was also seen handing out leaflets asking the people of Brighton for information in relation to the murders. A voice recording of Karen’s mum, Michelle Hadaway, phoning emergency services to report her daughter as missing was also released by police. She could be heard saying she had been “walking around for hours and nearly collapsed” after trying to find her daughter. Bishop was slammed for leaving the family in the dark for 32 years over who had murdered the two girls as they called him “evil personified”. Karen was discovered lying across Nicola with her head in her friend’s lap and their hands close together following the murder. Their bodies were discovered the day after they were killed. Bishop, who was then aged 20, later told a neighbour the vision of them lying across each other was a sight he would never forget. Families of both girls today wept in court when the verdict was delivered, with a devastating statement released by both families branding Bishop a “monster”. Speaking after the verdict, Mrs Hadaway said the families “finally have justice”. “Time stood still for us in 1986. To us the beautiful girls will always be nine-year-olds. They will never grow up,” she said. “We’ve been deprived of a happy life to watch them grow into adults. “What people like Bishop inflict on the families of their victims is a living death. They take the lives of children but they also take the lives of the families left behind. “Kas and Nicky, as they were affectionately known, were friends playing out together only to have their lives wiped out by a sexual deviant, a monster. “What’s been hard, horrendous and heart breaking is to hear that they were murdered by a disgusting paedophile, who we actually knew and the two girls liked and trusted. He abused that trust.” “Bishop doesn’t deserve to breathe the same clean air as we do. After all, he decided that day to strangle the life out of our two angels, leaving them no air to breathe. “What makes a man want to squeeze the life out of two innocent children with his bare hands? Unbelievable when he had a child himself and another on the way. “He’s a coward, without a conscience. I don’t believe you can rehabilitate evil. “I think Bishop was just born that way. People talk to me of forgiveness but I can never forgive or forget what the evil monster did to my beautiful Kaz and Nicky. “I’m trying so hard to get my head around this but I will because I’m a fighter and I’ll never stop being strong for my family.” Bishop is soon to receive his sentence for the murders.
  11. Uber’s popular rideshare and food delivery apps went into global meltdown earlier today, with users in Australia, US, Canada, Europe, New Zealand and India complaining of issues. Uber has since confirmed to News Corp that all their apps are now fixed and fully operational. The cause of the outage is unclear. The problems varied from passengers being unable to book cars, drivers being unable to collect payment for their trips or see where they were picking up customers, and meals that never arrived. Some also complained of being charged for trips that never happened. The problem affected the US and Canada the most with everything going down at one point. Here in Australia the issue mostly affected drivers, with app outages reported in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Uber’s support team took to Twitter during the chaos to apologise for the trouble and confirmed a team was working to fix the issue ASAP. The issue lasted about three hours and appeared to mostly affect andriod phone users, however some iPhone users also complained of issues. “We appreciate your patience,” the support team wrote to users experiencing issues today. Complaints mostly came from drivers, who said they were unable to work or claim their earnings due to the outage. Some Uber Eats drivers complained they had picked up orders but then the customer’s address and contact details had disappeared so they were stuck with the food. “He didn’t steal your burritos lol... if was anything like what happened to me all the delivery info disappeared once I picked up the order and started driving towards the customer,” Ohio driver Todd Mars tweeted. “Your app is broken,” Michael Wrong tweeted at Uber Support. One US driver complained he had accepted a ride but the app did not display the user’s name or address. “This is disgusting. I’m living this week on Uber payouts and now no cashouts from the app. Uber needs to compensate for the loss of drivers at this time,” Ahmer Sarwar complained., he later confirmed his issue had been fixed. “Down in Los Angeles. app does not show my location, profile or anything,” Kit Hunt wrote.
  12. NASA’s Voyager 2 probe has left the protective bubble around the Sun and is flying through interstellar space, becoming the second human-made object to travel so far, the US space agency said on Monday. The announcement came six years after its twin spacecraft, Voyager 1, broke the outer boundary of the heliopause, where the hot solar wind meets the cold, dense space between stars, known as the interstellar medium. Voyager 2 is now more than 18 billion kilometres from Earth, having passed the boundary on November 5. “This time is even better for us,” said Nicky Fox, director of the heliophysics division at NASA, noting that one instrument, called the Plasma Science Experiment (PLS), is still functioning on Voyager 2. “To have the Voyagers sending back information about the edge of the Sun’s influence gives us an unprecedented glimpse of truly uncharted territory.” The same instrument on Voyager 1 stopped working in 1980. The two spacecraft, which look like a combination of a satellite dish and an old television set with rabbit ear antennas, were launched in 1977 on a mission to explore planets in our solar system. “Both spacecrafts are very healthy if you consider them senior citizens,” Voyager project manager Suzanne Dodd said. The twin probes have left the heliosphere, but have not yet left the solar system, “and won’t be leaving anytime soon,” NASA said in a statement. “The boundary of the solar system is considered to be beyond the outer edge of the Oort Cloud, a collection of small objects that are still under the influence of the Sun’s gravity.” NASA says it will take about 300 years for Voyager 2 to reach the inner edge of the Oort Cloud, and possibly 30,000 years to fly beyond it. “We’re looking forward to what we’ll be able to learn from having both probes outside the heliopause,” said Suzanne Dodd, Voyager project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Voyager 2 is officially NASA’s longest-running mission.
  13. A Siberian policeman who raped and killed women after offering them late-night rides has been found guilty of dozens more murders, making him Russia’s most prolific serial killer of recent times. A court in the city of Irkutsk found Mikhail Popkov guilty of 56 more murders between 1992 and 2007, sentencing him to a second life term. He was already in prison after being convicted of killing 22 women in 2015. Popkov, dubbed “the Werewolf” and the “Angarsk maniac” by Russian media, offered rides to women late at night, sometimes in his police car, while off-duty around his city of Angarsk near Irkutsk, 4,200 kilometres east of Moscow. His murderous spree initially went unnoticed during a period of rampant mafia killings in the crime-ridden city. He killed his victims using weapons including a hammer and an axe, then dumped their bodies in the woods, at the side of the road and in a cemetery. He was also found guilty of raping 11 of the women. Popkov described himself as a “cleaner” who was purging his home city of prostitutes. All but one of his victims were women between the ages of 16 and 40. His one male victim was a policeman he gave a ride to late at night and killed in a forest. The grey-haired 54-year-old appeared in court in prison uniform, his head bowed. He will be sent to a prison that is exclusively for convicts serving life terms, nicknamed the “Black Dolphin”. As part of his sentence — a rare case in Russia of a convicted murderer being given a second life sentence — Popkov was also deprived of his police pension. He intends to appeal against the sentence, regional prosecutor Alexander Shkinev told Russian news agencies. COVERED HIS TRACKS Prosecutors on Monday described Popkov as having “a pathological attraction to killing people” and “homicidal mania with sadistic elements,” but he was ruled sane enough to stand trial. Investigators had suspected a policeman because of the way the killer carefully covered his tracks. The murders took place while he was a serving police officer and after he left the force in 1998. Popkov was caught in 2012 after investigators re-examined the case and carried out DNA testing of residents, focusing on those who drove a make of car that matched tracks found at crime scenes. In a 2017 interview with Russia’s Meduza website, Popkov said he gave women lifts and targeted those who were drunk or living in a way he saw as immoral, adding that “any society condemns the behaviour of a debauched woman”. While in jail, he confessed to 59 further murders but was convicted only of 56 on Monday because investigators had not managed to prove three of the crimes took place, Interfax news agency reported, citing the court’s press service
  14. Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has been short-listed for TIME magazine’s 2018 Person of the Year, alongside US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The publication unveiled the 10 finalists on NBC’s Today Show on Monday (local time). The title is not necessarily an honour, but representative of the impact the person — or movement — has had on the news within the past year, whether good or bad. Adolf Hitler was named TIME’s Man of the Year in 1938 (before it was changed to Person of the Year in 1999) and Joseph Stalin graced the cover in 1939. However, the “Silence Breakers” of the #MeToo movement, ebola fighters and Mahatma Gandhi have also been crowned the Person of the Year. In it’s unveiling of the shortlist, TIME editors wrote about Meghan: “Former Hollywood actor and activist Meghan Markle traded in her roles on screen for a royal title in May, when she married Britain’s Prince Harry to the delight of captivated crowds across the UK and millions more worldwide.” It’s hard to deny the Duchess of Sussex’s influence on the global conversation this year, with the former Suits actress dominating headlines since the news of her engagement to Prince Harry broke in November 2017. The world then watched on, swooning, as the couple wed in May this year, gripping the world with royal fever. As a divorced American mixed-race actor in her mid-30s, Meghan was seen by many to be a breath of fresh air and a welcome addition to the somewhat stuffy house of Windsor. Then there was her highly-anticipated Pacific tour with Prince Harry and the announcement of her pregnancy. The shine has now started to come off the woman the world was once besotted with, but the Duchess of Sussex is still dominating headlines — amid rumours of a feud between her and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and her outrageous demands of staff. The latest hit to her reputation has come after The Times confirmed that the couple’s renowned personal secretary, Australian Samantha Cohen, 50, will leave her role after the birth of their child in spring. Ms Cohen’s resignation follows another sudden resignation just weeks ago, further fuelling the rumours that the Duchess is difficult to work for. The other nine candidates for TIME’s 2018 Person of the Year include: US President Donald Trump (who was previously chosen as Person of the Year in 2016) Separated Families at the US border Russian President Vladimir Putin (who was previously chosen as Person of the Year in 2007) Special Counsel Robert Mueller Black Panther director Ryan Coogler Brett Kavanaugh accuser Christine Blasey Ford Slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi March For Our Lives anti-gun activists South Korean President Moon Jai-in
  15. Christmas has arrived at Kensington Palace for Harry, Meghan, William and Kate. A spectacular tree has been spotted in the palace grounds, adorned with twinkling fairy lights and giant baubles, reports The Sun. The gigantic 10-metre tree certainly looks fit for royalty and was part of the palace’s festive makeover. The tree will act as a centrepiece for the Kensington royal residence and will be lit up throughout the Christmas period. It is located in the palace grounds and marks the official start of the dukes and duchess’ yuletide season. The Historical Royal Palace charity uploaded a video on Twitter of the stunning tree being decorated ahead of its unveiling. This tree will mark the first Christmas Harry and Meghan will spend at their home in Kensington Palace. But it could also be their last as they are set to relocate to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor next year, where they will welcome their first child. The move comes as Meghan and Kate have found themselves at the centre of a rift storm as rumours circulate about the pair falling out at least a year ago. Not to be beaten, Buckingham Palace has also gone all out for its own Christmas decorations — and as expected, they’ve done so in style. Over on Instagram, they’ve given us a glimpse of the ornate display in Buckingham Palace’s Marble Hall. There are three large Christmas trees — which were grown in Windsor — as well as a garland fixed along the grand staircase. The trees have been decorated with some very fitting ornaments, which come in the shape of crowns, crests and carriages. The garland is just as glamorous, with velvet bows and colourful baubles lining the golden banister. Sparkling white lights finish off the festive arrangement. In the post’s caption, it’s explained: “The custom of displaying Christmas trees was introduced to Britain in the late 18th century by Queen Charlotte, consort of King George III, although it was a yew tree rather than a fir that was used. “The Christmas tree was popularised by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in the nineteenth century
  16. Google is still having trouble protecting the personal information on its Plus service, prodding it to accelerate plans to shut down the little-used social network it created to compete with Facebook. A privacy flaw inadvertently exposed the names, email addresses, ages and other personal information of 52.5 million Google Plus users last month. The glitch convinced Google to close the service in April instead of August, as previously announced. Google revealed the new closure date and its latest privacy lapse in a blog post published on Monday. It is the second time in two months Google has disclosed the existence of a problem that enabled unauthorised access to Plus profiles. In October, the company acknowledged finding a privacy flaw affecting 500,000 Plus users that it waited five months to disclose.
