  1. When you think of the original cast of Star Wars characters, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford are likely the first names that come to mind. But there were others who were alongside that trio, like Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca. Sadly, it’s been announced that Mayhew recently passed away just shy of his 75th birthday. As revealed by his family via his Twitter page, Peter Mayhew died on the evening of Tuesday, April 30 in his North Texas home surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by his wife Angie and three children. No cause of death was revealed in the press release, but Peter Mayhew's family told ABC News he suffered a heart attack. It's also worth noting that Mayhew had undergone a spinal surgery to improve his mobility, and he had been recovering from that procedure. There will be a memorial service held for family and friends on June 29, and a memorial will be set up at Empire Con LA this December for fans to check out that Mayhew’s family will attend, as well as feature some of the actor’s “personal effects” and “collection.” Born on May 19, 1944, Peter Mayhew kicked off his film career when he was cast in the uncredited role of Minoton in 1977’s Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger. Shortly thereafter, George Lucas discovered Mayhew and felt he was the perfect height to play Chewbacca in the first Star Wars movie, a.k.a. A New Hope. Along with reprising Han Solo’s Wookiee partner in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Peter Mayhew also donned the Chewbacca suit during the Original Trilogy era for Donny & Marie, the Star Wars Holiday Special and The Muppet Show. Years later, Mayhew returned to the big screen side of the Star Warsfranchise for the final installment of the Prequel Trilogy, Revenge of the Sith. He also voiced Chewbacca for an episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Peter Mayhew made his final Star Wars appearance in The Force Awakens, where he shared the Chewbacca role with Joonas Suotamo. Afterward, he retired from playing the character due to health issues, and Suotamo took over the role fully, but Mayhew did still consult on Chewbacca for The Last Jedi. Outside of the Star Wars franchise, Peter Mayhew is also notable for playing The Tall Knight in the 1981 series Dark Towers, voicing Susha in the English dub of Dragon Ball GT: A Hero’s Legacy and playing himself Comic Book: The Movie. He also attended numerous fan conventions and established the Peter Mayhew Foundation, which aids in a variety of charitable causes. We here at CinemaBlend offer our condolences to Peter Mayhew’s loved ones. Feel free to share your thoughts about the Star Wars icon in the comments below. 2. Karen Gillan is currently starring as Nebula in Avengers: Endgame, the biggest movie in the world and one where her character plays an important part. But rather than take the rest of the year off, the actress is washing off the blue paint and putting on an outfit completely impractical for jungle adventuring for Jumanji 3. Karen Gillan is currently busy filming the threequel, and for whatever reason, she got to ride a camel on set. Check it out: A TARDIS may get you there faster and a spaceship might be more fun, but neither has the style of rolling up to set, shades on and riding on the back of a camel. In the first photo on her Instagram, Karen Gillan looks like a real pro, as if riding a camel is something she does every day when going out to eat, going shopping and going to work. This is just another leisurely stroll on the back of a camel to her. In the second picture, it is clear that Karen Gillan is having a good time interacting with the gentle beast. It’s probably a bit more satisfying to be around an animal you can pet than talking to a nonexistent raccoon with a grumpy attitude. Ruby Roundhouse’s strengths in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle were primarily combat-related things like Karate and Dance Fighting, so she must have used her experience points from that adventure to upgrade her character and add Camel Riding to her skill set. Fortunately, camels aren’t venomous because we saw Ruby Roundhouse didn’t do so well with snakes in the last movie. Assuming that this isn’t just how the studio is transporting actors around set on Jumanji 3, I think we can look forward to seeing some camels in the film. The last movie was set in a purely jungle environment, and although we don’t yet know the exact plot of this one, camels aren’t generally jungle animals. The Rock has teased “blistering desert dunes” so it looks like the game has new levels yet to be explored. Karen Gillan’s Killer of Men gets at least one new outfit in this movie, and one that looks like it belongs in a colder environment. Jack Black has also teased that Ruby Roundhouse will be getting some major upgrades, beyond the aforementioned camel riding. Whether or not Karen Gillan will get her wish to be playing an old manas the Ruby Roundhouse character remains to be seen. 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was one of the biggest cinematic surprises of recent years, blowing away the skeptics and going on to make almost $1 billion at the worldwide box office. The sequel film from director Jake Kasdan will see Karen Gillan, Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Nick Jonas and Kevin Hart joined by Awkwafina, Danny DeVito and Danny Glover. The as-yet-untitled Jumanji 3 (or Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle 2) opens on December 13. Hopefully a title and a trailer aren’t too far off. Check out our 2019 Release Schedule for this and all the big movies still to come this year.
  3. Today, it was announced that Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca across five Star Wars movies and numerous other projects, had died earlier this week of a heart attack, just shy of his 75th birthday. This marks yet another passing of a Star Wars icon, and while it’s sad that Mayhew is no longer among us, it’s also touching to see those who worked alongside him paying tribute to the man. First off, we have Harrison Ford, who acted alongside Peter Mayhew as Han Solo, Chewbacca’s longtime partner, in the original Star Wars trilogy and The Force Awakens. In his statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Ford honored Mayhew not only was a work partner, but as a true friend in real life. Next, we have Mark Hamill, who also spent a lot of time alongside Peter Mayhew when he was playing Luke Skywalker in the first three Star Wars movies. Hamill said the following: Then there’s Billy Dee Williams, who joined the Star Wars franchise as Lando Calrissian in The Empire Strikes Back and performed alongside Peter Mayhew in that movie and Return of the Jedi. Williams posted: Much more than Chewie to me...My heart hurts…I will miss you my dear friend…thanks for the great memories! #RIPPeterMayhew #StarWarspic.twitter.com/0DfCo59zpG — Billy Dee Williams (@realbdw) May 3, 2019 Following The Force Awakens, Peter Mayhew retired from playing Chewbacca, and Joonas Suotamo, who shared the role with Mayhew in the first installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, has been playing the trusty Wookiee full time ever since. Here’s how Suotamo paid respects to his mentor: R.I.P ???? pic.twitter.com/FWRgaOS0Tf — Joonas Suotamo (@JoonasSuotamo) May 2, 2019 Of course, there wouldn’t be a Star Wars franchise without George Lucas, who discovered Peter Mayhew and personally selected him to play Chewbacca. Lucas paid tribute to Mayhew with the following statement to ABC News: 'Star Wars' creator George Lucas on the death of Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew: "He was the closest any human being could be to a Wookiee: big heart, gentle nature" https://t.co/ANrDJCY3J9 pic.twitter.com/Up0xPHZnEj — ABC News (@ABC) May 3, 2019 Then there’s The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, who never worked with Peter Mayhew, but was nonetheless inspired by his work ethic, saying: RIP Peter Mayhew. To create a beloved character with warmth and humor is a testament to any actor’s spirit. To do it under a half ton of yak hair takes a true legend. ???? — Rian Johnson (@rianjohnson) May 3, 2019 Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recognized Peter Mayhew’s impact on the Star Wars franchise thusly: "We are deeply saddened today by the news of Peter Mayhew’s passing. Since 1976, Peter’s iconic portrayal of the loyal, lovable Chewbacca has been absolutely integral to the character’s success, and to the Star Wars saga itself."-Kathleen Kennedy. More: https://t.co/iGfk9XRzKa pic.twitter.com/5edrPrEuRS — Star Wars (@starwars) May 3, 2019 Finally, Disney CEO Bob Iger mourned Peter Mayhew’s passing with these words: The @WaltDisneyCo mourns the loss of our beloved #chewbacca portrayer, #PeterMayhew. Peter was larger than life in so many ways...a gentle giant playing a gentle giant. Rest in peace. — Robert Iger (@RobertIger) May 2, 2019 These are just some of the many reactions you’ll find about Peter Mayhew’s death, both from well-known figures and regular Star Wars fans. While he’s no longer with us, his presence in the Star Wars franchise will continue to be felt for many years to come. Mayhew also acted in projects like Dark Towers, Dragonball GT: A Hero’s Legacy and Comic Book: The Movie, and along with being a regular on the convention circuit, he opened the Peter Mayhew Foundation, which aids in numerous charitable causes. Be sure to share your thoughts about Peter Mayhew in the comments below. The Star Wars film series continues later this year with the release of The Rise of Skywalker on December 20. 4. Since his breakout role as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Andy Serkis has established himself as one of the most brilliantly transformative actors in modern Hollywood. Obviously a big part of it is his dedication to and expertise in the world of performance capture, but even when it comes to his “live-action” parts he rarely appears as he does in everyday life. All that being said, you wouldn’t necessarily expect him to bring that same kind of energy to a role in a comedy like Jonathan Levine’s Long Shot, and yet he did… with absolutely nobody actually telling him to do it. I learned the full story about Andy Serkis’ serious commitment when I attended the Los Angeles press day for Long Shot late month and had the pleasure of sitting down with the director and stars. Having gotten word about Serkis’ special initiative in the making of the movie, I first brought up the actor’s work during my interview with Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron, and both of them expressed their genuine surprise about their co-stars’ transformation into the role of Australian media mogul Parker Wembley: The same sentiment was echoed later by Jonathan Levine, who confirmed that nobody actually asked Andy Serkis to sit in the make-up chair for many hours each day so that he could fully embody his vision of the character. At the same time, though, the director ultimately came to the realization of what the actor was doing, and got to understand the importance of physicality in the parts that Serkis takes on. Said Levine, In Long Shot, Andy Serkis’ Parker Wembley is basically halfway between Rupert Murdoch and Richard Branson, and is quickly introduced to the story as an antagonist. He winds up purchasing the independent newspaper for which Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen) works as a reporter, and because Flarsky disagrees with Wembley’s politics he decides to quit. This quickly establishes legitimate conflict, but his role becomes more substantial because of his interest in gaining influence over Secretary of State Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron), who has ambitions to run for President of the United States. Andy Serkis’ level of devotion to his craft should be obvious to this point, but what makes the whole thing even more jaw-dropping is the extra detail that Seth Rogen dropped during our conversation. After all, it’s one thing to be willing to sit in a make-up chair for six hours every day, but the choice becomes even more extreme when you learn that sometimes he would go through the entire process and then not shoot a single frame of footage: This is pretty insane to think about, particularly when you consider that actors regularly complain about the process of going through extreme transformations – but perhaps it’s a bit like taking long car trips: if you go on them regularly enough, eventually you just kind of get numb to their monotony. You'll obviously be able to see Andy Serkis' full performance in the film, but he can briefly be spotted a couple times in the trailers - the first being in the screenshot above, and a second time in the shot below: Regardless of exactly how Andy Serkis was able to put himself through that painstaking process in the making of Long Shot, at the end of the day it was something for which Jonathan Levine expressed extreme admiration and appreciation. Said the director, It was amazing for us, because for me it reminded me of Coming To America or Dick Tracy, you know - movies where you're like, 'Who is that guy?' and that part of it becomes part of the fun of the movie. So it was always came from a fun place, and it was always consistent with what we were going for tonally. What's great about Serkis is he's a director too, so he knew he wasn't like 'going rogue.' It was a collaborative decision, but it was one that I was just kind of like, 'Dude, you really want to be here six hours longer than you have to?' I love directing, but you know, as soon as that whistle blows, I'm out the door. [laughs] Also starring O’Shea Jackson Jr., Ravi Patel, June Diane Raphael, Alexander Skarsgard, and Bob Odenkirk, Long Shot is a romantic comedy that ultimately follows the relationship between the aforementioned Fred Flarsky and Charlotte Field, the latter having previously been the former’s babysitter. After losing his job, Flarsky winds up becoming a part of Field’s speechwriting team, and while he starts to learn how to not constantly get in his own way, she is also inspired to stand up for the ideals in which she believes. It’s one of the best comedies of the year so far, so be sure to look for it in a theater near you when it’s released this Friday.
