Godzilla: King of the Monsters was originally scheduled to arrive in 2018, but ended up being delayed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Sixty years after Godzilla made their big screen debut in Ishirō Honda's 1954 classic, the big fella was rebooted for American audiences by Legendary and then lesser-known director Gareth Edwards. Whereas Roland Emmerich's 1998 Godzilla remake (unsuccessfully) tried to refashion the sci-fi franchise as a cartoonish blockbuster, Edwards' reboot took a decidedly more grounded and dramatic approach. In the end, it was a hit and grossed over half a billion dollars at the global box office, in addition to respectable reviews. In doing so, Edwards launched a shared universe of giant monster movies that's since come to be known as simply the MonsterVerse. The franchise continued in 2017 with Kong: Skull Island - a King Kong origin story set in the immediate aftermath of the Vietnam War - and was originally slated to pick up in 2018 with King of the Monsters, followed by Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020. And while the latter's on schedule to arrive next year (with You're Next filmmaker Adam Wingard calling the shots), the Godzilla sequel has since been delayed until this week. The reason? A little property called Star Wars. Edwards was initially attached to direct King of the Monsters after he finished production on Lucasfilm's prequel-spinoff, Rogue One. The Godzilla sequel was even scheduled to arrive four years after the MonsterVerse's reboot, in order to give Edwards the time he needed to complete his Star Wars movie. However, in May 2016, Warner Bros. announced that King of the Monsters (which didn't have a title at the time) had been pushed back to Spring 2019. Edwards departed the project three days later, saying he wanted to take a break from tentpoles and focus on smaller films after helming Godzilla and Rogue One back to back. He was subsequently replaced on the sequel by writer-director Michael Dougherty (Krampus) in January 2017. ing of the Monsters will ultimately hit theaters five years after the Godzilla reboot, which isn't exactly ideal for a sequel meant to expand a shared universe. Kong: Skull Island's post-credits scene even included a direct tease for King of the Monsters, so it's clear the film was designed to hype the next MonsterVerse entry's arrival a year after, before it was pushed back. The Godzilla sequel is now expected to open lower at the U.S. box office than its predecessor and Skull Island, with current estimates predicting a $54 million three day take. Of course, the delay isn't the only factor to consider here. King of the Monster is also facing much stronger competition than the previous MonsterVerse films did, including Disney's live-action Aladdin (in its second week of release) and the critically-acclaimed Elton John biopic, Rocketman. Somewhat ironically, King of the Monsters was finished in November 2018 and has been waiting for its May 2019 release date ever since. However, even with the delay following Edwards' decision to step down (which was probably influenced by Rogue One's reshoots) and lowered box office projections, the Godzilla sequel's in decent shape right now. Early reactions have praised the film's giant monster battles, so its opening weekend take could rise thanks to the positive buzz. WB and Legendary are no doubt happy about the news, seeing as Godzilla vs. Kong is already in post-production and gearing up to begin its marketing blitz at San Diego Comic-Con this summer (much like King of the Monsters did at SDCC 2018). Disney’s remake of “Aladdin” is off to a magical start, earning $31.5 million from 4,476 screens at the box office on Friday. While trackers expected a 4-day Memorial Day weekend opening of $75-85 million, “Aladdin” is now on pace to blow that out of the water with estimates now reaching $109-111 million, higher than the $103 million 4-day start earned last year for “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” Granted, at this point in the weekend, there’s a lot of room for “Aladdin” to either push estimates even higher or to see a big day-to-day drop. The latter was the case for “Solo,” which saw its opening estimates plummet as the weekend went on until it needed the Monday holiday to get an opening above $100 million. With plenty of other leisure options besides movie theaters available this holiday weekend, swings in fortune aren’t out of the question. But the good news is that “Aladdin” has word of mouth on its side. While critics have been tepid about the remake with a 58% Rotten Tomatoes score, Disney fans nostalgic over the Genie and “A Whole New World” were very much pleased with a Postrak score of 4.5/5 and an A on CinemaScore, the latter matching the audience grade given to the 2017 remake for “Beauty and the Beast.” The groundwork is set for the strong word of mouth that could keep moviegoers turning out throughout the weekend. In the number two spot is Lionsgate’s “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” which earned $6.6 million on its second Friday and is on course for a solid second weekend with a $30 million 4-day total. That would give “Wick” a two-weekend total of $106 million, making it the first Lionsgate film in 18 months to gross more than $100 million domestically. “Avengers: Endgame” will take third with an estimated $22 million in its fifth weekend, pushing its domestic total past $800 million. WB/Legendary’s “Detective Pikachu” will take fourth with $17 million, pushing its total to $120 million after three weekends. Completing the top five is Sony/Screen Gems’ anti-Superman horror film “Brightburn,” which earned $3 million on Friday from 2,607 screens, putting it on pace to meet studio projections of a $10 million 4-day opening. Reception has been lukewarm at best for the film, with a 57% Rotten Tomatoes score and a B+ on CinemaScore. Still, with a $6 million budget, the bar to reach profitability has been set characteristically low by Sony. Just below “Brightburn” is the third new release of the weekend, Annapurna/United Artists’ “Booksmart.” After making $2.4 million from 2,505 screens on Friday, Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut is estimated to hit the lower end of projections with an $8 million 4-day start. It is with equal parts pride and humility, sadness and joy that I am writing to inform you all that Canada’s Worst Driver is officially finished. Done. The great runaway hit has finally crashed and burned. I had really hoped we would get to do a “Goodbye” season to end the series with a tip of the hat to the faithful audience, but alas, we are simply done without any fanfare. Many, many, many thanks to the hundreds (yes hundreds!) of people who have worked on the show over the years. Your creativity and grit, both on set and behind the scenes, are what made CWD the longest running reality series in Canadian TV history. Thanks to Discovery Channel and all the good people there, too. And let’s not forget the Worst Drivers themselves! No prizes, no paychecks, no reason to be on the show other than to learn. You folks, and the men and women who nominated you, really put yourself out there, and for that, I can not thank you enough. Your willingness to overcome obstacles on camera has saved lives, for when you learned, Canadians learned, and that has prevented countless accidents. But the biggest thanks of all, of course, goes to our late, great leader Guy O’Sullivan. Ursula Macfarlane’s film, which highlights new accusers, was sold by Embankment Films for seven figures after a world premiere at Sundance. Hulu has acquired the U.S. rights to Ursula Macfarlane’s Untouchable, a documentary about sexual assault allegations made against disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein that went unchecked for decades. The feature film from Lightbox, which bowed at Sundance, highlights new accusers as it recounts Weinstein's rise and fall in Hollywood. Embankment Films negotiated the seven-figure deal on behalf of Lightbox. The once-powerful movie mogul has been accused by women in several lawsuits of seeking to trade his influence in Hollywood for sexual favors. Weinstein also faces a criminal trial on sexual assault charges. "We are thrilled that Untouchable has been acquired by Hulu, which is the perfect home in the U.S. for a film which should serve both as a cautionary tale for the younger generation and an enduring example of how seemingly unchecked power can be held to account when courageous people choose to speak out," Simon Chinn and Jonathan Chinn, co-founders of Lightbox and producers of Untouchable, said Sunday in a statement. Weinstein was ousted from the movie company he founded after a barrage of sexual harassment and assault allegations started becoming public in October 2017 and gave fuel to the #MeToo and Time's Up movements. Untouchable is a co-production with the BBC, which will air the doc after its theatrical release. Media Finance Capital financed the film alongside the BBC. David Gilbery, Charles Dorfman, Simon Young and Tom McDonald are executive producers. Untouchable has sold out in major territories, and Embankment will handle the theatrical rollout in international markets before Hulu’s streaming release. Sony is launching PlayStation Productions, an in-house studio dedicated to bringing its games to life on film and television. Video game movies have been frequently popping up in Hollywood. Last year saw the release of Rampage and Tomb Raider. More recently, Detective Pikachu released to decent reception, becoming the highest rated video game film. Later this year, Sonic the Hedgehog will be released. Although PlayStation Productions is a new thing for Sony, a couple of its franchises have already been adapted for the big screen. There were the two Tomb Raider films starring Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s. In 2018, the Tomb Raider reboot video game was adapted to mixed reception. In 2016, a CGI adaption of Ratchet and Clank was released. Unfortunately, it bombed at the box office and was negatively received. As for The Last of Us adaptation, there has not been a progress report since 2016, when the film was said to be at a standstill. On the flip side, the Uncharted movie appears to be moving along. Sony has decided to launch its first production company focused on video game adaptations, called PlayStation Productions (via THR). The studio will be headed by Asad Qizilbash and SIE Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden. In an interview with THR, Layden said, "We feel that now is a good time to look at other media opportunities across streaming or film or television to give our worlds life in another spectrum." Layden would go on to say that the studio is taking some inspiration from what Marvel has done in the cinema. In fact, Qizilbash said they talked with different figures to gain an understanding of the film industry, including Kevin Feige. As for why Sony doesn't simply licence its many characters out, Qizilbash says it would be better for PlayStation itself to develop, "One, because we’re more familiar, but also because we know what the PlayStation community loves." Layden would go on to explain the studio's philosophy on creating video game adaptations. Instead of adapting a multi-houred playing experience into a movie, Layden says, "You take the ethos you write from there specifically for the film audience." PlayStation Productions will be working on both television and films. Layden says a property will be adapted to a medium depending on which format best suits the property. PlayStation Productions is an unexpected surprise. For years, the norm was to license out properties to film studios. Even Nintendo, who is very protective of its franchises, is working with Illumination on the Super Mario movie instead of developing the film itself. PlayStation Productions paints an exciting future for video game movie adaptations. It will be very interesting to see which properties are chosen for the big screen, or television. God of War, especially its most recent installment, would at first appear to be best suited for the cinema. But, Game of Thrones has proven that cinematic level stories and dragons can be shown on the smaller screen. Could Crash Bandicoot be turned into an all-ages animated show? If Sony is taking inspiration from Marvel, does that mean we'll see a universe of characters - perhaps Sly Cooper, Ratchet, and Jak? There are a lot of questions that will be answered as time goes on. We're not sure what this means for projects already being developed, such as the Tomb Raider sequel, The Last of Us, or the Uncharted movie. DJ Khaled took to social media on Wednesday (May 15) to share a letter about a special interaction he had with the late Nipsey Hussle. "Recently, I embarked on a soul-searching journey down a road I never thought I would travel in a million years," he wrote. "It began when a tragedy robbed the world of an enlightened soul, a brother a father, a partner and my friend, Nipsey Hussle." "Just days prior, he shared his energy and positivity with me on a video set for a song called, 'Higher.' After much prayer and reflection; and with the full blessing of the Asghedom family, I am sharing that moment with you." Khaled ended his message by revealing that all proceeds from "Higher" will go to Nipsey's two children, Emani and Kross. Another Survivor winner has been crowned as the Edge of Extinction season came to close Wednesday (May 15th 2019) night on CBS. But as one journey ends, another one begins, and at the end of the reunion show host Jeff Probst revealed the trailer and theme for season 39 of the reality giant. Survivor: Island of the Idols (airing in the fall) will feature a cast of 20 new contestants competing for the million-dollar prize. But, as always, there is a twist. Unbeknownst to the players, two of the game’s legends in Sandra Diaz-Twine (who won both the Pearl Islands and Heroes vs. Villains seasons) and Boston Rob Mariano (who won the Redemption Island installment) will also be out there. When players are sent to the Island of the Idols they will find two living, breathing Survivor idols in Sandra and Boston Rob waiting for them. Sandra and Rob will not actually be playing the game, but instead will serve as advisors to the contestants that visit them; answering questions and offering assistance on any topic, be it strategy, shelter building, or social tips. Whether the players share the secret of the two winners with their fellow contestants when they get back to camp is up to them. So where did the idea for this latest twist come from? “The idea came from wondering how to get a player like Boston Rob, who has said he’d never compete again because he doesn’t feel he’d ever really have a shot to win, to return to the show,” says Probst. “So, the idea of making Rob and Sandra mentors was born. They aren’t playing, they can’t cast a vote, they can’t be voted out, and they can’t win the million dollars. The basic idea is they run a Survivor boot camp. They teach aspects of the game and then give players a chance to test what they’ve learned.” This is actually not the first time a former winner has come back to offer advice to a current contestant. Survivor: Caramoan champ John Cochran returned on a swanky yacht during Survivor: Game Changers to offer advice (as well as a choice of advantages) to Debbie Wanner. But how will the players on the new season (which recently completed filming) use the advantage of leaning on the wisdom of these two Survivor greats? “I could say a lot, but I won’t say anything,” says the host. “But kudos for asking.” DAMN YOU, PROBST! SPOILER ALERT: Read on only if you have already watched (or don't care about) the finale of Survivor: Edge of Extinction. In a Survivor first, a winner was crowned after playing only 13 days of the game. Chris Underwood was the third person voted out of Survivor: Edge of Extinction way back on day 8. But after biding his time on Extinction Island (and befriending his future jury members), Chris won a challenge to get back in the game on day 35. He then made a flurry of big moves in the final days to pad his thin résumé, including convincing Lauren O’Connell to play a hidden immunity idol on him, giving half of an idol he received upon reentering the game to Rick Devens, who then gave it back to him to play at the final 5, winning the final immunity challenge, and then giving up that immunity to take on (and defeat) Rick in a fire-making competition to send the biggest threat out of the game. In the end, the jury respected the late-game moves — no doubt contrasted against the lack of big plays by fellow finalists Gavin Whitson and Julie Rosenberg — and awarded Chris the title of Sole Survivor and the million-dollar prize that goes along with it. It is sure to be a move debated by Survivor fans for years to come as Chris, who only played a third of the game’s 39 days, becomes the first player to ever win the game after being voted out. This is the fifth season in which Survivor has had a twist in which players voted out returned to the game. The only other time someone whose torch was snuffed made it to the end was back in season 7 when Lillian Morris (who was also voted out third) reentered Survivor: Pearl Islands as part of the Outcasts twist and lost in the finals to Sandra Diaz-Twine by a vote of 6-1.
