  6. Last month it had emerged he was in discussions over a possible South Africa comeback with an eye on the T20 World Cup The chances of AB de Villiers featuring in this year's T20 World Cup have dimmed, with Cricket South Africa stating that he has decided "once and for all, that his retirement will remain final". de Villiers retired from all international cricket in May 2018, but has been active in franchise T20 competitions. Last month, when he was playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2021, it emerged that he was in discussions with South Africa coach Mark Boucher over a possible comeback with a view towards featuring in the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in October-November in India. On Tuesday, CSA announced in a release that discussions with de Villiers have concluded. There was little other detail on this development, with the release largely focusing on the squads that have been named for South Africa's upcoming Test and T20I tour of the West Indies. At the time when de Villiers revealed he had been in talks with Boucher, he had sounded enthusiastic about the prospect of a South Africa comeback. "Last year, he asked me if I would be interested. And I said, 'absolutely'. And come the end of the IPL, we will have a look at where we are at with regards to my form and my fitness," de Villiers had said. "Also, the situation with his team - he's got to look at his guys who have been performing well over the last while. If there's no space for me, so be it. If I can slot in there, it will be fantastic if all those things fall in place. Waiting for [the chat with] Bouchy towards the end of the IPL, and we will then plan accordingly." Ever since his sudden retirement announcement in 2018, talk of a comeback has constantly surrounded de Villiers. He came closest to ending his retirement on the eve of the 2019 ODI World Cup, when he made a last-minute offer of an international return, but was rebuffed by the then team management. Hopes of a de Villiers comeback had intensified after a new leadership group including director of cricket Graeme Smith and coach Mark Boucher - both former international team-mates of de Villiers - took over the national team's reins towards the end of 2019, but those hopes now seem extinguished. de Villiers, 37, is among South Africa's greatest-ever batters, their fourth-highest run-getter in Test cricket and their second-highest in ODIs and T20Is. He remains one of the world's finest T20 players, and was in red-hot form during IPL 2021 before the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic brought the tournament to a premature halt, scoring 207 runs in six innings at an average of 51.75 and a strike rate of 164.28.
  7. Wembley Stadium, London Full TIme Chelsea 0 - 1 Leicester City It's Leicester City's day as they finally win the FA Cup on their fifth final appearance! The club's greatest-ever era continues thanks to Tielemans' wonderful second-half strike, a goal worthy of winning any game. Chelsea tried their best but had no answer to it late on, with Schmeichel's two astonishing saves from Mount and Chilwell and a dramatic VAR decision keeping them out.
  8. CA says that the governing body is still open to hearing and investigating any new information about the Newlands incident Cameron Bancroft has conceded there had to be wider knowledge of Australia's ball-tampering tactics against South Africa in the Newlands Test than the punished trio of himself, David Warner and Steven Smith. Speaking to the Guardian interviewer Donald McRae in Durham where he is playing county cricket, Bancroft admitted under questioning that it was "self-explanatory" that bowlers in the Test team had to be aware the ball was being tampered with. "Yeah, look, all I wanted to do was to be responsible and accountable for my own actions and part. Yeah, obviously what I did benefits bowlers and the awareness around that, probably, is self-explanatory," Bancroft said. "I guess one thing I learnt through the journey and being responsible is that's where the buck stops [with Bancroft himself]. Had I had better awareness I would have made a much better decision." When pressed further, he replied: "Uh… yeah, look, I think, yeah, I think it's pretty probably self-explanatory." On Saturday night*, Cricket Australia clarified that the governing body was still open to hearing and investigating any new information brought to light about the Newlands incident, whether from Bancroft or anyone else. "CA has maintained all along that if anyone is in possession of new information in regards to the Cape Town Test of 2018, they should come forward and present it," a CA spokesman said. "The investigation conducted at the time was detailed and comprehensive. Since then, no one has presented new information to CA that casts doubt on the investigation's findings." While levying heavy penalties on Bancroft (nine months), Warner and Smith (one year each, with Warner banned from holding any leadership positions for life) for their roles in ball-tampering, CA had ring-fenced the matter away from the rest of the team, although head coach Darren Lehmann resigned a few days later after seeing the tearful press conferences of the players upon their early returns to Australia. In March 2019, former chief executive Kevin Roberts had this to say about that prospect, while defending the initial investigation conducted by the former CA head of integrity, Iain Roy, between the Cape Town and Johannesburg Tests: "If they've got any concerns about ball-tampering or any concerns about any integrity issue in the game, we've invited them to report that through our anonymous integrity hotline or through other means that are available to them. "We haven't had any such reports, so we won't jump at shadows, but if anyone does report concerns about any integrity matter prior to ball-tampering or whatever it may be, we're serious about addressing that, and we have a process to address it. We're really serious about addressing any unresolved issues and we're sincere in the way we're going about that. So if there are any reports or allegations as opposed to innuendo, then we will investigate that thoroughly. "Certainly the investigation needed to be conducted swiftly, we needed to fulfil our commitment to field a team against South Africa the following week, and we didn't know whether we'd need to fly 11 new players in to fill that team or no new players. The ultimate answer was somewhere in between. So the investigation was absolutely fit for purpose, but we haven't rested on those laurels. We've made repeated and extensive invitations to anyone to report any integrity matters or concerns about ball-tampering ever since." Though Smith and Warner have returned to the team, Bancroft is now a long way from international consideration, having played the first two Tests of the 2019 Ashes series before being discarded and then struggling to recreate his best days in the Sheffield Shield in 2019-20. He performed better last summer but is not considered to be in the front rank of contenders for a place in the national side.
  9. Seventh-placed South Africa are at their joint-lowest in Test ranking history after the annual update India and New Zealand retained the top two places in the ICC men's Test rankings after the annual update, while England overtook Australia for the third spot. West Indies also moved up by two positions to be placed sixth, one slot above South Africa. India, who have an aggregate of 121 rating points, are only one point ahead of New Zealand. The two teams will face off against each other in the World Test Championship final to be held on June 18 in Southampton. England climbed up by a place after their 4-0 defeat to Australia in 2017-18 was dropped from the rankings in the latest update. In the current cycle, all matches played since May 2020 are rated at 100% and those of the previous two years at 50%. Meanwhile, West Indies moved from eighth to sixth place on the back of a 2-0 series win against Bangladesh and 0-0 draw with Sri Lanka earlier this year. This is their best position since 2013. Pakistan remained fifth despite gaining three points after their 2-0 win against Zimbabwe. South Africa are placed seventh, their joint-lowest in Test ranking history. Only Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe are below them. Ireland and Afghanistan are yet to play enough Tests to figure on the rankings table.
  10. On this auspicious day of Eid, may all your wishes be fulfilled and may you find happiness and peace. Eid Mubarak!
  11. Kusal Perera has been named new ODI captain and Kusal Mendis has been recalled and made vice-captain, while Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal have been dropped in a major shake-up of Sri Lanka's ODI team. In naming a young squad, Sri Lanka's new selection committee - headed by Pramodya Wickramasinghe - and coach Mickey Arthur have signalled they are seeking to aggressively develop a fresh set of limited-overs players with a view to the 2023 World Cup. Across the 18 players named, only 33-year-old Isuru Udana is older than 31, and just three players are above 30. While the ousting of Karunaratne is something of a surprise - the team had performed better under him than they had in the 18 months leading up to his captaincy - it is the dropping of Mathews that will be most controversial. Mathews' most recent ODI outings have largely been good. He was the Player of the Match in the second-to-last match he had played - against West Indies in March last year - for his four wickets. Before that, he had also been one of Sri Lanka's best batters at the 2019 World Cup, and had averaged 52.50 with the bat in 2018, and 63.66 in 2017. Mathews' fielding and fitness standards had appeared to have improved substantially by the start of 2020 as well. Karunaratne, meanwhile, had not been quite as good with the bat - averaging 36.06 since he took over, and striking at just 76.52. But under his captaincy, Sri Lanka had won ten and lost seven matches. Perera has never led Sri Lanka in any format, but his ODI batting had achieved some level of consistency in 2019, when he averaged 43.06 with a strike rate of almost 100. He is set to become Sri Lanka's ninth ODI captain in the last five years - Chandimal, Mathews, Lasith Malinga, Thisara Perera, Upul Tharanga, Lahiru Thirimanne, and Chamara Kapugedara having held the post, in addition to Karunaratne. The return of Mendis, particularly to a position of leadership, is also significant. He has been out of all of Sri Lanka's squads since completing a sequence of four consecutive ducks through the course of Test series against South Africa and England. But he had been good in the only ODIs he had played in 2020, hitting 20, 119 and 55 at home against West Indies. From among the younger players in Sri Lanka's talent pool, the selectors had wanted Avishka Fernando in the squad, but he failed a fitness test which, according to the strict selection policy put in place by Arthur, ruled him out of contention. Fernando had also missed the tour of West Indies in February for the same reason. Pathum Nissanka and Ashen Bandara - both 22 - are in the squad, following decent maiden series in the Caribbean in February. But it is the batting line-up missing the big names that will draw most attention during the three ODIs. All three matches will be played in Dhaka, on May 23, 25 and 28.
  12. Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will be missing the remainder of the Pakistan Super League 2021. It has been reported that the all-rounder will be taking part in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL). Shakib was initially not in any of the squad for the 2021 edition of PSL but later called up as one of the replacement players. He was picked up by Lahore Qalandars in a special replacement draft which was recently organized by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). There are two other Bangladesh players, Liton Das and Mahmudullah, who have signed for Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans respectively. Officials from the Mohammedan Sporting Club, a traditional DPL club, have submitted a letter signed by the Bangladeshi cricketer, in which he has expressed a desire to take part in the domestic tournament. “We have submitted a letter signed by Shakib to CCDM (Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis) that says he is keen to take part in the competition for us,” Tarikul Islam Tito, a top official of MSC, told Cricbuzz. Shakib Al Hasan all likely to sign up for Mohammedan Sporting Club However, Mohammedan Sporting Club has to take permission from the Bangladesh Cricket Board to acquire the services of Shakib Al Hasan. As the all-rounder had not participated in the last edition because of his ban, this time around he is free to choose any team as he wishes. MSC has been trying its best to get him on board, but he has to get a clearance certificate from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). “He (Shakib Al Hasan) will not play in the PSL and instead opted to be part of our team in DPL. He is a free player because he was not part of the 2019-20 DPL due to his ban and now as he is eligible to take part and we have shown our keenness to take him on our side. BCB is yet to grant him for us but we hope to get the permission soon,” Tito added. This season of the Dhaka Premier League will be played in the T20 format, instead of the usual 50-overs format. The tournament is scheduled to start on May 31. The last season of the tournament had to be called off after just one round.
  13. New Zealand keeper-batsman BJ Watling has announced that he will retire from the sport after the upcoming tour to England, that will include two Tests against the hosts and the inaugural World Test Championship final against India from June 18. If he features in all of them, which he is expected to, Watling will surpass Adam Parore's record for most Test appearances as New Zealand wicket-keeper. "It's the right time," Watling said of his announcement. "It's been a huge honour to represent New Zealand and in particular wear the Test baggy. Test cricket really is the pinnacle of the game and I've loved every minute of being out there in the whites with the boys. "Sitting in the changing rooms having a beer with the team after five days' toil is what I'll miss the most. I've played with some great players and made many good mates. I've also had plenty of help along the way for which I'll always be grateful." "My wife Jess has been a constant source of stability and support and I'm certainly looking forward to being able to spend more time with her and the kids. I also owe a big thanks to my mum for steering me in the right direction early on and always being there for me. Watling enters the last leg of his successful career with 249 catches (including 10 as a fielder) and eight stumpings to his name. The 35-year-old's batting reel is populated with quite a few eye-catching performances too, most notably a double hundred against England in an incredible win at the Bay Oval in 2019. Watling was also part of two incredible partnerships - 362 runs with Brendon McCullum against India at the Basin Reserve in 2014 and 365* with Kane Williamson against Sri Lanka at the same venue in 2015. It's the double hundred that will stay long in the memory of his coach Gary Stead, who reckoned Watling has been a 'crucial cog' in New Zealand's success in the longest format over the past decade. "BJ is a wonderful player and a great bloke," Stead said. "He works really hard on his game to get improvements and always puts the team first. You just have to look at the respect he's held in by his teammates and the opposition to appreciate his standing in the game. "The records speak for themselves and he's been such a crucial cog in the Test team's rise over the past decade. That double hundred he scored at the Mount in 2019 was one of the best innings I've ever seen and epitomised BJ Watling as a player, really. "The attitude and fight he brings to every day and every session of a Test is what has made him such a valued member of the BLACKCAPS. He is without a doubt one of our best ever wicket-keeper batsmen," he added. NZC chief executive David White was particularly effusive in his praise for Watling's ability to bat out with the tail, and his efficiency behind the stumps. "BJ turned games around," White said. "I can't think of another player who reacted so positively, and who was successful in the face of adversity. His ability to wring every possible run out of the tail was unmatched; his work behind the stumps tireless and efficient," "He has a quiet, unassuming and undemonstrative manner that belies the huge appetite he has for the contest and the challenge. BJ's been a huge part of the success of the current BLACKCAPS team and on behalf of NZC, I want to wish him well for the upcoming Tests in England and life after cricket." Watling heads into the last three Tests of his career with 3773 runs at an average of 38.11. He has also played 28 ODIs and 5 T20Is for New Zealand, while spending the entirety of his domestic career with Northern Districts, for whom he played 91 First-Class matches, 62 T20 games and 90 List A fixtures since debuting in 2004.

  17. Match Summary: Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat Pakistan 1st innings 510-8 dec (147.1 overs) Zimbabwe 1st innings 132-10 (60.4 overs) Zimbabwe 2nd innings 231-10 (68 overs) Pakistan won by an innings and 147 runs Man of the match: Abid Ali Man of the series: Hasan Ali Series: Pakistan won the 2-match series 2-0
  18. Day-4 It took exactly five overs on the fourth day for Pakistan to take the solitary wicket they needed to complete a 2-0 clean sweep over Zimbabwe, bowling them out for 231 and winning by an innings and 147 runs. Shaheen Afridi was the man to make the breakthrough, coaxing Luke Jongwe into a drive the batsman could only edge through to the wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan. It saw him complete a five-wicket haul, becoming the third Pakistan bowler in the Test to do so after Hasan Ali and Nauman Ali. This is the first time in Pakistan history three bowlers have taken five wickets in a single Test, and just the sixth time overall. Despite the bowling heroics, it was Abid Ali who scooped up the Player of the Match award for his first double-century. The day began with Jongwe looking to farm the strike, ensuring he faced Afridi while Muzarabani was left to negotiate the less menacing Tabish Khan. The pair looked largely comfortable with this arrangement, but with Zimbabwe having little hope in the wider context of the game, it was only a matter of time before the breakthrough would arrive. Pakistan will fly home content with the way they came back in the Test series after the indifferent T20I leg. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, will rue their performances in two rare Tests against high-quality opposition, and gear up again for a series against Bangladesh later this year.
  19. Day-3 Pakistan are on the cusp of a 2-0 series win after regular strikes in the final session left the visitors just one wicket away from wrapping up an innings victory. On a day that began with a magnificent spell of fast bowling by Hasan Ali, culminating in yet another five-wicket haul, Zimbabwe folded meekly in the first innings, and were forced to follow on. The second time around, there were flashes of resistance disappointingly absent nearly all series, with an 80 from Regis Chakabva and Brendan Taylor's flamboyant 30-ball 49 guaranteeing the hosts surpassed 200 for the first time this series. Nauman Ali, though, was the chief architect of Zimbabwe's downfall in the second, taking five wickets of his own, before Zimbabwe's tenth wicket pair dug in to ensure the game would go to a fourth day.
  20. Day-2 In a series in which Zimbabwe have offered little competition, this might be the nadir. On a turgid, attritional day for the hosts, Pakistan piled the runs up high with Abid Ali scoring an unbeaten double century on the second day of the second Test in Harare, combining for a 169-run partnership with No. 9 Nauman Ali, who scored a brisk 97 of his own. It allowed Pakistan to amass 510 before Babar Azam declared, leaving Zimbabwe with an uncomfortable final session to negotiate. But that they didn't, with Brendan Taylor's side losing four frontline batsmen in 30 overs and ending up trailing by 458 runs overnight.
  21. Day-1 Centuries from Abid Ali and Azhar Ali put Pakistan in firm command of the second Test at stumps in Harare. The pair combined for a 236-run second wicket partnership - a record at this venue - which spanned nearly the entirety of the day. Zimbabwe found themselves toiling on a slow pitch, with the ball offering little encouragement for most of the day as the two batters played out near chanceless innings. The arrival of the new ball ensured the hosts would have something to take back with them overnight, with three quickfire strikes from Blessing Muzarabani sending Azhar, Babar Azam and Fawad Alam back before stumps were called. Even so, Pakistan had moved on to 268 for 4 by that time, finishing the day well in control.
