Don’t let his win percentage fool you, Jose Mourinho had to go

A defeat to Liverpool over the weekend sounded the final death knell for Jose Mourinho’s two-and-a-half years in the Manchester United dugout.

With the Special One finally falling on his sword after months of chaos and unrest at Old Trafford, images have been doing the rounds of his win percentage and trophy haul in comparison to other highly regarded Premier League managers.

Mourinho’s 58.3 per cent return, and the fact he’s lifted three trophies at United, look impressive alongside Jurgen Klopp’s 54.7 per cent with the Reds and Mauricio Pochettino’s 56.4 per cent at Spurs – both of whom boast bare trophy cabinets.

In fact, his numbers fall only just shy of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson’s 59 per cent win percentage across his tenure at the club.

THIS SEASON SO FAR:

Premier League: 7 wins from 17 matches

League Cup: 0 wins from 1 match

Champions League: 3 wins from 6 matches

TOTAL: 10 wins from 24 matches. 41.6 per cent.

But to recast Mourinho’s spell at the club in a different light based on these numbers would not tell the entire story of a manager who, by the end, really had to go.
