Lots of good recommendations here. I like several of these shows. Here are some of my favorites in descending order of quality. I'm likely going to be seconding a lot of recs here, but oh well.

The Wire - hands down the best show I've ever seen. It's a slow burner, but a must watch. I was hooked at the end of the 1st season.

Deadwood - This was my number one until The Wire knocked it free, Ian McShane rules

Breaking Bad - very awesome, great story, incredible acting, show's creator loves to play with his camera angles to create very interesting shots

Arrested Development - My favorite comedy series, very clever

Archer - Superb cartoon

Spartacus - It was ranked higher, but I'm not a fan of the new actor that replaced the old one after he died

Justified - Anything with Timothy Olyphant in it rules

Mad Men - Mellow, but a fun show to watch

Game of Thrones - not bad, keeps me watching. I like the books better, but GRRM will probably die before he finishes them

Dexter - at least until season 5, after that, it heads downhill rapidly

Those are what I can think of off the top of my head, there are a lot more I like if you've already seen these.

Newsroom is worth sitting through eventually. Continuum had some low points but was overall good for a new sci-fi... plus it has x-files associations which makes it awesome. Also... watch x-files.

Surprised to see that no one's mentioned "The Walking Dead". Has it just become so ubiquitous that everyone just assumes that everyone else watches it?

I mostly second all of the previous recs (although I petered out with "The Wire"... it was awesome, I just stopped after a few episodes for no good reason.)

I really liked the first season of "Damages".

If you do like "It's Always Sunny...", then I would recommend "The League", also on FX. I love IAWIP but I actually think that "The League" is funnier. Recently watched most of the first season of "Shameless" (the US version). Anyone here compared the US to the UK version? I think the British show's been running for ten seasons!?
