BJ Watling, the New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman, has been signed by Lancashire for the 2020 County Championship season. Overseas signing Watling will be available for nine Championship fixtures that starts with the encounter against Kent in April.

"To have someone of BJ's calibre on board for the first nine County Championship games of the season is fantastic and we're looking forward to welcoming him to Emirates Old Trafford," Lancashire's Director of Cricket, Paul Allott, said after the signing.

"We identified a top order batsman as a priority in the overseas player market and BJ fits the bill perfectly. His First-Class and Test record is exceptional and he adds valuable experience to the batting line-up."

The 34-year-old has so far played 66 Tests for New Zealand with a healthy batting average of 40. The last of his eight Test centuries came against England at home recently which incidentally turned out to be his first double hundred in the format. Watling played a couple of games for Durham at the end of the last season and ended up scoring an unbeaten hundred in the second fixture.

"I am delighted to have signed for Lancashire," Watling said. "I enjoyed my first taste of English domestic cricket last year with Durham and I'm looking forward to getting started at Emirates Old Trafford in the New Year. It's important to start quickly and I hope I can contribute towards plenty of wins in the first nine games to help the Red Rose challenge towards the top of Division One."
