Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Officially Passes $1 Billion At Box Office

Disney and Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has topped $1 billion at the global box office. Released last month, the latest Star Wars feature concludes the saga that began in A New Hope. Although the film is doing great at the box office, it is technically doing the worst of the sequel trilogy. It had the lowest opening weekend, and still trails behind The Last Jedi.

2019 was a big year for Disney. Movies like The Lion King and Toy Story 4 were hits worldwide. To end off the company's year, Disney released Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Although fans were divisive on The Last Jedi, anticipation was high for the new movie after the title reveal and first trailer confirming Emperor Palpatine's return. As expected, The Rise of Skywalker is doing big business for Disney. However, it is under-performing in comparison to The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. There are different factors to analyze for The Rise of Skywalker's box office performance. Unlike the previous two movies, critic reception for the current film is much more negative. Still, The Rise of Skywalker is a financial success. It was reported yesterday Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker would top $1 billion, and now it's official.

After 24 days, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has made over $1 billion (via CNBC) at the box office worldwide. This makes it the seventh Disney film of 2019 to accomplish this feat, a record for the company and industry as a whole.

According to CNBC, The Rise of Skywalker has made $481.3 million domestically, and $519.7 million in the international markets. In five days, it will be exactly one month since release. The film's theatrical run isn't over yet, so it will continue to rise at the box office. It probably won't reach The Last Jedi's gross of $1.333 billion, however.

It is interesting to analyze why reception has been lukewarm for The Rise of Skywalker. In some ways, the film was similar to Avengers: Endgame. Both were culminations of a years-long saga. However, Avengers: Endgame was praised by critics and fans alike for its satisfying conclusion to the story. For The Rise of Skywalker, the film has not been seen by many as a satisfying ending, instead feeling separated from the previous movie. Recently, Colin Trevorrow's Star Wars 9 script for the film reportedly leaked, which already has gained some positive reception. At the very least, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was able to conclude the overall saga with the theme that ran through the original trilogy as well as the sequel trilogy: hope.
